Xingyi Quan Ten Minute Primer - San Ti Shi Post Standing

This is the first video in a series of Xingyi Quan Ten Minute Primer Videos. The aim of these videos will be to introduce the key points regarding training methods and basic fundamental aspects of Xingyi Quan that anyone can follow, whether they are new to the art or practice it already.
In this video, I cover San Ti Shi Post Standing (Zhan Zhuang) which is Xingyi Quan's base and required fundamental practice. The key points covered in this primer video will enable you to begin your Xingyi Quan practice, or if you are an existing practitioner, to refine its key technical details.

    This is a most helpful video for starting this practice and it cannot be overstated how important this practice is. This is not simply something you learn in a day or a month or even a year. Stay here, practice this daily, preferably for a long time. The benefits are many and too long to explain here. I do suggest the following book (which is easily obtained): The Internal Practices of Sun Lu-T’ang A section of this book explains the practice as taught to Master Sun Lu-T’ang by Master Guo Yun-Shen and is explained in detail by Madam Sun Jian-Yun, daughter of Master Sun Lu-T’ang.

    Might sound a bit freaky, but I got used to practice this Bufa while taking the subway… so I get somehow a training benefit for an average hour a day.. I enjoy so much the purpose of keeping still along the curves and breaking inertia 😁 just don’t raise my hand to avoid scaring people 😅

    I just found a school that is somewhat close to where I live that teaches Hebei style Xingyi Quan. My first class is next Sunday, I’m really excited to start learning. This video is really helpful to get me started on basic stance work. My legs are no strangers to this kind of stance (somewhat similar to Wing Chun’s 40-60 stance) but it’s a big weakness of mine. 😁

I HAD A TRAGEDY BACK 12 YEARS AGO AND LOST MUCH OF MY ABILITY TO WALK AND MORE recently STOPPED FULLTIME TRAINING THE LAST FEW YEARS. I still do CHI kung 5 days a week. Based upon two to three minutes of listening to this post I feel I agree and found Sifu who understands structure and intent training IN HSING I. I heard principles and structure and clarity. Thank you for your videos. I find them very informative and immensely useful. I am practicing san ti shi daily for a while now and am seeing clear benefits. Sadly in Romania where I live the internal martial arts scene isn t very developed, and xingyi quan is nonexistent. I was wondering if you know of any decent worthwhile schools in europe that you could please recommend me. I am very interested in seriously exploring the power, energy spirit and intent parts that you mention and would like to dedicate time and energy to it.

    Thank you for this series. Having stumbled upon this amazing channel, I count myself lucky. If you don't mind, I'd like to ask a few questions: 1. I've just started practising Santishi according to your instructions, so it probably won't come as a surprise, that I can't hold the stance for very long. In fact, my timer is set to 5 minutes on eacb side, but after 3 minutes at best, my legs start shaking like mad. Should I shorten the time for now or is this something to just push through? I personally don't mind a little pain, just curious about your 'stance' on this issue. 2. Since I can't even show you pictures, let alone meet you, this might be a stupid question, but my stance doesn't feel very stable and I keep wondering whether this has something to do with my having rather long legs. Should people like myself step out a little further than the suggested two feet? Or maybe just sink down a little further on the rear leg? Have a great day!

    Hi! I'm very glad you are finding the content beneficial. About your questions, I would say push through to the 5 minute mark. After a bit of time your body will adapt, sooner than you probably expect. Regarding the second question, it most likely is not about the foot spacing but rather some other issue. Try sinking further on your rear leg and ensure your weight is correctly distributed. Actually, I launched an online learning program yesterday, which includes further detailed lesson videos, as well as the ability for you to submit a video monthly for feedback. The content is substantially deeper and a much wider range of practices are shown. Maybe this is something you would benefit from. I'm still trying get my rear leg angled right. When my right leg is back it feels like I'm hurting my right knee. That cannot be right. When my left leg is behind it feels fine. And I'm right handed. I'm certain I'm missing something. I'm not sure what yet, though. I will keep practicing. Should I stay on post standing rill I get it or should I do a little post standing, a little footwork, etc so that I will generally improve over time?

    Check the toe to knee alignment of the rear leg as well as the weight distribution. It might be an issue with ankle flexibility. This will gradually improve but try to amend it so you dont feel knee pain. You can start moving on to the other content, it may help alleviate the problem for sure

    I figured it out...I think. When I was trying to shift my weight I think I kind of adjusted my feet so that I placed my knee into an uncomfortable position. What I've been doing now is to rotate my hip and use that to shift my weight onto my rear leg. For example if my right leg is in the rear I rotate my hip counterclockwise...maybe 15-20 degrees. That's puts my weight onto my rear leg without changing the position of my knee so its not placed in a compromising position. I've practiced ITF Taekwon-Do and I had to do the same thing to get the weight distribution for their L - stance. Had the same knee issues if I just tried to fit my knees/legs in the correct orientation. I'm working on footwork and Pi Chuan now. Whew it's a lot. LOL. @@MuShinMartialCulture

    What time duration of standing is considered a nice result for advanced practitioners?

  • @MuShinMartialCulture

    @MuShinMartialCulture

    Жыл бұрын

    A couple of things to keep in mind. Firstly, how one is standing. Some standing is more strenuous than others, higher, or lower, intent being full or not etc. This will effect how long you can stand for. Secondly, different lineages place differing focus on extensive period of standing, and others state you should not stand for long periods. An average I would say to begin a training session would be between 5 and 10 minutes per side. If you want to go deeper, then stand for longer

    Many thanks for the instruction laoshi, your instruction in these ten minute primers is holistic. For the pelvis tilt, what is the approximate angle you curve inwatds and in what direction is weight focused from this point? I attempt to adhere to the traditional text 'The Xingyi Boxing Manual" by Jin Yunting, as well as 'The Study Of Xing Yí Quan' by Sun Lutang where they both state, "Lift the anus". Though I do feel as if I am tilting the pelvis a bit too much. At this moment it is around 25-30°. Additionally, I have noticed that my Wuji Posture has no pelvic tilt at all(incorrect practise?) , nor is the anus raised. Must the anus be raised for both Wuji posture and San Ti Shi? And if so, are the angles the same?

  • @MuShinMartialCulture

    @MuShinMartialCulture

    Жыл бұрын

    Hi there. Thanks for the comment. I'll answer one aspect first. Lift the anus (Ti Gang) does not refer to the pelvic tilting, but is an aspect that is common in Xingyi Quan and Bagua Zhang and Taiji Quan referring to the clenching of the anus during practice.

    @@MuShinMartialCulture On the contrary, thank you for taking time to answer these queries. Does this mean that the Sinking of the hips in both San Ti Shi or Wuji posture is not as a result of pelvic tilt, but a byproduct of slightly bending the knees? Unless the position of the hips in Wuji and San Ti Shi are different and I gots it off.

    So my teacher was Suns student. But also had 7 other famous teachers. He himself is very famous. And then he met master Wang who was guos student. Well the entire story of the most famous xing yi man since guo is centered around the San ti shi. Guo had him stand. Apparently for duration. Puddles of sweat. I also did this for more than 10 years. Over 2 hours was my record. So proud... ( not). The thing is that this did not work for the most famous xing yi guy of the 20th century!!! In fact it so did not work that Wang went on an all China quest to fix it!!! And he did. The problem is xing yi is internal but when you learn it externally, it doesn’t produce the phenomenon of martial ability. Internal is concerned with the intangible not the shape. Shape training doesn’t work. So Wang made a modern crib notes to achieve xing yi ability. By all accounts he was amazing in reality. He challenged and fought everyone who would do it. He published a challenge in the paper for years. He was ahead of his time. And now that I’ve been closed door for 20 years, I can tell you that just static posture holding will only give you a crude physical result. Not the won Jing process . Hsyq is the only survivor or the transmission process. All these arts can be lost in one generation if the internal transmission fails. Look at tai chi!! ( or ba gua or xing yi, mostly empty now).

    Wang Xiangzhai was 13 when Guo died, we know quite well the real story there about his "time" with Guo. My grand-teacher was a sworn brother to Yao Zongxun, who was Wang's top student, so we have a lot of history there. Xingyi does NOT only practice static post and does NOT only do San ti shi. This is not accurate by you and the art is far more refined and involved than what you are saying. The proof is in the pudding with the multiple generations of excellent xingyi practitioners who were extremely competent and skilled and known for their fighting ability and most of them were employed needing to use these skills daily. These are facts.
