Xi'an (西安), the capital of Shaanxi Province (陕西省), is a city with profound historical significance and a vibrant present. It serves as a cultural, industrial, political, and educational hub in the central-northwest region of China. With a population of 12,952,907 as of the 2020 census, Xi'an is the most populous city in Northwest China and ranks among the top cities in Western China in terms of population.
Historically known as Chang'an (长安), Xi'an is celebrated as one of the Four Great Ancient Capitals of China, having been the seat of power for several crucial dynasties, including the Western Zhou, Western Han, Sui, Northern Zhou, and Tang. This illustrious history has left Xi'an with a rich tapestry of cultural heritage, including the Terracotta Army of Emperor Qin Shi Huang and the starting point of the Silk Road, both UNESCO World Heritage sites.
In modern times, Xi'an has emerged as a significant center for research and development, contributing to the economic growth of inland China. It holds sub-provincial status, administering 11 districts and 2 counties, and has been recognized as a Beta- (global second tier) city by the Globalization and World Cities Research Network. The city's GDP reached CNY 1002 billion (approximately US$154.2 billion) in 2020, with a per capita GDP of CNY 98205 (US$15,108).
Xi'an's educational landscape is notable for its prestigious institutions, including Xi'an Jiaotong University, Northwestern Polytechnical University, Xidian University, and Northwest University, making it a leading city in scientific research output as tracked by the Nature Index.
The city's ancient and modern features coexist harmoniously, with landmarks like the Giant Wild Goose Pagoda and the Xi'an City Wall standing testament to its historical significance, while its economic and educational advancements highlight its role in contemporary China.
