Ordered an exactly similar board and connected a 23-0-23 AC. Even without connecting the speakers the heatsink gets quite hot after about 15 mins. Is this normal for class D amp?. Would appreciate your viewss on this.

Build a DIY boombox/portable stereo with that. using some car audio speakers, MDF box, with that thing inside and maybe a BT receiver connected to it. Also these modules would make great retrofits in STK amps in bookshelf stereos, like sony. I know Sony keeps the amplifiers on a separate module.

Nice video sir. I bought this board Fter watching this video. My board came up with 2fans ,one each ic with 2 individual heatsink and a little volume control. requirements of the transformer is dual 24Vac (24-0-24AC) above 300VA so I ordered a 24 dual ac 500VA toroid transformer. I never used on board dual rectifiers so I made my own dual DC power supply with 4 22000uf capacitors 2 on each channel and 8 SF58 (5amps) ultra fast recovery diodes 4 on each channel. I hooked every thing up the sound quality is much better than my old stk4191 ic's receiver. Bass and sound quality is really good and expected after spend around $200 behind the project lol. I got a question now, should I use 4 more diodes and 2 capacitors to make another dual 24 DC supply to added my another stk4191 board with the same Transformer?? Because I feel like it's weasting of power lol, the tda8954 board probably can pull 300-400 VA (6-8 Amps) 3 to 4 amps on each channel and I still got 150-200 VA(2.75 to 4 amps)left which is perfect for my stk4191 board. Any suggestions please?? By the way all other components like volume control board fans etc I have used another transfer so no power lose from the main transformer. Any suggestions please.

You sound like you have a pretty good idea what you are doing. Im just learning but have some ideas that I think I want to try. Where did you get your board with fans and volume control? I'm thinking of building one with BT module and building it bigger heating and some other fan systems to run lower frequencies for a little longer.

I have the same class d amp, and just recieve it yesterday. it is meant for a very nice stereo subwoofer system with a pair of 10" 500watts 8 Ohm, that i restored and upgraded for the task. i hope it work good enough to drive those swoofers. I will ask somethings: This amp has on it a couple of TDA8954TH (TDA8954TH x 2) each one fixed at mono function. and it's datasheet show a power value of 420 watts per channel. Sorry if i don't understand or miss something in the video, but: what is the real output power of this amp per channel with a psu at 18 volt 10 amp (this is a very nice trasformer) and at 24 volt 10 amps? this amp can be arranged in bridged mode? (because this amp have 2 TDA8954TH each one already bridged to give 420 Watts each or per channel.) so, in this model, how can i use the bridged mode? thanks for any help about this matter. greetings.

How many amps transfer use in the board

When you start playing some music at 15:48 the top and bottom of the switching waveform starts jumping around badly. This means the DC supply rails are very unsteady. (I understand the transition point, the actual point where the waveform goes from low to high and vice versa is a function of the signal, is meant to be moving about). To put it another way, the vertical parts of the waveform definitely have to move about. The horizontal parts of the waveform should stay steady. I would say the DC filter capacitors on the board are way way too small.

whats the difference between the xh-m251 and the xh-m252? Also where is everybody getting a power supply thats suppling 28 AC volts?

Is this equivalent to a professional sound amplifier? What are the differences? Is this what Yamaha is currently using (for example) with its active speakers? I would appreciate your answers, greetings!

hey, may i borrow your expertise on an amplifier project that I've been struggling with, somewhat related to this video? the premise is that I have a pair of amp chips (both containing TDA8954s), which usually run on 24VAC, but instead, im running them with 2x 24V meanwell DC power supplies, which i am running in series, with a center tap between the two power sources to be my virtual ground. The amp chips work fine, but I've cooked something when trying to connect a low pass filter chip, and/or the aux socket to the amp chip's input terminals. I'm pretty sure that because my virtual ground is at +24v, and the sleeve is true/chassis ground, there is a shorted potential. So, I've added DC blocking capacitors between the socket, and the virtual ground, and another one between the two signal ground terminals, and still, something is cooking. The low pass filter runs off the first power supply for +24 DC power, if that helps. Thank you for reading.

solved it! had the low pass on the negative rail, even though it was correctly on the + and - on that power source. i also needed to ground the center node between the two power sources, the presto! working amps!

Did anyone tried to connect this board on 40vac transformer ?? Because in datasheet saying that this chip tda8954th can deliver 420w in 8 ohm load with +-41v ?

How can you power a 420 watt amp with telecom data wire? You didn't have and 10 or 12 gauge? 14 even? I'm still happy you did some tests on it either way but it just seems like its handicapped that way.

The TDA8954 is a nice amp, pretty cheap on reputable vendors too, and available in both SMD & through hole. Its just a bump better then the TDA8950. Its great if you need a single channel 330W RMS or less @ 0.5% THD @ 8 ohms (BTL bridge mode), or 2x 160 W RMS or less @ 0.5% THD @ 4 ohms... For higher power, I like the TDA7293, which can be paralleled. You absolutely ran this almost to rock bottom, with that little 80VA transformer. The TDA8954 needs +-41 @ 400VA or so to reach it's true max clean potential, whilst maintaining 0.5% THD. And that is just ONE TDA8954! That board you bought has two of them :o You'd need ~700VA or better. It is interesting though... there is no max input current listed on the spec sheet. Class D is quite dynamic, but still I like to reckon you need at least the input power to deliver output power on the average. Music is dymanic too, so many factors. I like to oversize my transformers rather then clip or dip on the rails. Old surround sound (5.1 - 9.2 and etc) receivers are the easiest source for transformers that typically put out +-30V or more. Onkyo is a really easy source, because of all the problems with the DSP chips on the HDMI board, failure is high, and there is an abundance of units for sale for spares or repair... The higher models with more output power have beefier transformers. The amplifier design is discreet, and with some patience, offers a lot of bonus parts and/or can be utilised. The majority of the time on these select models, there is nothing wrong with the amplifier or power supply... its always the DSP on the HDMI board. An easy way to get an idea of the transformer is to just look on the back panel of the receiver, at the power consumption. 500W+ is really good. Sometimes it just shows voltage and amps. Just multiply them to get watts. You can find these all day long on ebay... Another thing you can do is put in an ad on Gumtree/Craigslist/Etc... offering to pay like $25 for broken receivers that people would otherwise toss into the rubbish bin... I had great success in scoring multiple Onkyo units that way, sometimes free because the people are environmentally conscience :) I really do like these TDA chips, minimal component count, inexpensive, and great performance/watts per dollar. My final thought on these Chinese supplied TDA amp boards... is the heatsinks are WAYYYYY to small, if you ever want to utilise the chip's true clean potential. I'm too lazy to do the maths on the thermal characteristics and requirements (but it is all in the datasheet). Again, this is where the through hole versions and old AV receivers come in handy. They have nice heatsinks that can be repurposed ^_^

FIY... the TDA8954TH is the same chip that ROKIT 10s Sub uses...

If the tone control supports it. So No. You dont need a balance control cause the chips are already balanced

Do you have a net hum in the speakers when AC supply is connected to this amplifier? I bought the same model as presented on your video and unfortunately i have strong net hum in my speakers. I use Denon PMA-720AE as a preamplifier (it has designated outputs) and 2x27V AC transformer from old amplifier. I am some shocked because it disclasifies disqualify this amplifier. Additionally the radiator is getting very hot after a few minutes after the switching it on.

But, my item plays music so this is very strange. You do not have hum and your amplifier even does not getting hot during playing the music. So, i think my amplifier is broken. I have to return it. This is the risk that it have to be taken into consideration when items are bought on Aliexpress.

You need 2 secondary winding. 24024,12012 one for amp and other for preamp

How to bridge two tda8954th ?

i have question you might have insight about concerning my XH-M252 setup. it works great, but it runs very hot, 140F on the sink in still air while outputting no noise. you mention low heat in your video so i wonder why mine is so hot at rest. is it because i have a too-large 28-0-28V transformer? is it the 2ohm impedance subs wired to each output? something else? thank you i advance for your time and expertise.

It is rated 24 - 0 - 24 volts. I was running at 18 - 0 - 18, but I had my variac turned up to 150 so I was running about 22 - 0 - 22 and had no severe heating problems. The heatsink gets warm, perhaps to 110F but that is pretty normal. I also ran it into 4 ohm load.

12voltvids thank you again for such a timely reply. from your numbers, it seems like i oversized my transformer thinking the output wattage should be similar to the rating, (300VA, 28-0-28V.) i will replace it with a 250VA 25-0-25V transformer i have lying around and add a little computer fan- is this likely to add noise to my LPF’s output of they’re on the same 12V DC boost converter? thank you for the read.

I use a 20-0-20, 15 amp transformer and it heat 45 degree celcius without any music play. I think its like class A amp, always on.

Whats the other board thing u have on your desk, the one with the audio in cables.

Hi, new to your Chanel , enjoy your vids, have picked up a few tips and tricks, I'm an ametuer enthusiast so always looking out for helpful instruction, Liked you review of the turntables, although not convinced enough to buy one, How ever; have a question for you relating to turntables, I just bought a valve preamp, the 6j1 stereo and its output is extremely quiet, my question is, are these things design for ceramic cartridges or magnetic, I use magnetic, and the only way I could get this thing to perform was to plug into a built on turntable preamp in an older HiFi amp?. gary Maddison Many of these valve buffers are just that. They work with line in and give line out. For a magnetic cartridge you need a magnetic pickup preamp. They are also available. I converted one of my tube buffer over to a phone preamp stage by just adding an ic based phono preamp with runs eq ahead of my valve preamp. That way I get the gain of the preamp ic. And the sound of the 12au7 tubes. Sounds fantastic.

Mark Markofkane 210 per channel is what they claim and the chip spec supports this. At 24v CT transformer that is 48 volts rail to rail to rail per speaker output lead and since this is btl that would be 96 volts differential max between the +and - terminals. You will obviously never see 96 volts as that would be in a perfect 100% efficient model but it should be able to push peaks well into the high 80 volt range. These amps are pretty efficient. I used to thumb my nose at class d, as being a bit of an audiophile snob my feelings is if it doesn't have tubes in it, it isn't worth putting music through, but lately some of these new designs have had me rethinking that opinion. I still think tubes have a nicer warmer sound at low levels but these modern class d, especially this one has balls. It has a good amount of punch, thanks to those huge inductors no doubt.

You can do that with dual voice coil speakers. Also many Texas Instrumen class D amps lets you bridge them for mono and 2 ohm stable.

@@coilsmoke2286but it said on the datasheet on the amp chip. It can only handle 8 ohm loads..... But it can handle 4 ohms but it has a current limit and cuts of at around 60% vol due to the protection.

there are 2 chips on the board one for each channel and they already are in bridged mode because one chip is a stereo amp but with a brdiging mode built in so that they are already bridged normaly 2x210w one chip and bridged 1x420w because there are 2 chips 2x420w

If you follow the link you can find that info. It is built around a tda8954th Rated power 210 per channel into 4 ohms. Look up the chip for specs. I have no means to measure distortion but I am quite sure the published data is correct.

It needs to be powered by ac. It uses dual full wave bridges to produce +48 and -48 volts for 96 volts potential between the 2 rails. That is how it makes the high power it makes.

Over voltage will make it shut down. The voltage limits are on the spec sheet. Look it up.

I have this same amplifier, every thing sounds good and seems ok but the only complain is that those inductors and the heathsink gets too hot(65c+) without any load and signal, after 2 minutes of being connected i can't even touch the heathsink or the coils so i think something is wrong or is about to fail,the voltage is 24-0-24 AC so nothing wrong there, not even a linear amplifier do this that i know. Also i have another amplifier tpa3116 that only gets hot when music is playing loud

@@zunayedislam4029 i have a tda8964th u can actually go up to 30 0 30(27 0 27 is the sweetspot imo) and unfortunately the advertised impedance handling is false. it can only to 8 ohms stable(for those dual btl/bridge mode models ) u can go down too 4 ohms. but the current limiter in the amp chip kicks in and let the amp to protect mode. so you could either get the single chip version or lower the voltage down to something like 22 0 22 or 18 0 18 to handle 4ohm loads(the dual btl/bride models). u could still hook up 4ohm loads on it at 24 0 24 but dont expect to use its full potential cause of that current limiting in the chip.

It's nice they used Nichicon caps on this one. :)

They look fake, with the bubbly tops. To be sure, the bottom rubber vent is a dead giveaway. The fakes i've seen are not shape molded.

The problem is fakes are very hard to spot from the outside. Many times legit parts makers will make a slight dsign change and then everyone thinks they are fake. The only way one can tell if if they start failing in numbers and that usually doesn't happen for a long time. No manufacture will use substandard or counterfeit parts. For starters if they did and these were identified as such, entire shipments could be seized by customs and destroyed. There is a difference between using no name shit parts, and making shit parts with legit brand and trade marks. When those are discovered the entire shipments are seized, so no company is knowingly put them in. You are much more likely to get fake parts when ordering spare parts off ebay than in manufactured goods.

This isn't true for smaller chinese boardmakers. They will put in fakes knowingly. It won't hurt sales on alibaba and ebay.

No. It requires Ac and only Ac as it makes its own DC, both a + and - rail and it doubles the voltage doing so.

I have the same amplifier board, just got it. Mine has a high pitch sound on idle and inductor coils hear up like crazy

28vac 0 28vac to do it for full power but it will get hot as hell, even when on idle. So you need to put a fan inorder to not make the amp to overheat. 24vac 0 24vac is the recommended for good power

And maximum amperage it gets is around 10~17Amps so you might need some beefy power supply

Each side of the amp is already bridged look up specs for TDA8954TH

Ok, two inductors per channel, so it's bridged. I found that 10W is enough volume for mid range 6" speakers in the car doors. 420W sounds excessive!

I would love to try these amps out but looking for a transformer is given me a headache now.

12voltvids 24 volts at 500W (200Wouput/channel right?) isn't easy to find, that's for sure. Rectified that's 34 volts or so, B+ voltage only found in low power recievers. I guess it's a catch 22. Does this amp's power supply require a center tap? A variac is dangerous but may be the only good way to get full power.

Evan Fitzgerald It will draw much less than you think. At full power this is going to draw less than 10 amps on the low voltage side. Remember each side is bridged so each leg running 48 volts around 2.5 amps, 5 amps per speaker. 10 amps total for low voltage side. Primary side would be about 2 amps. Remember these are very efficient amplifiers unlike a linear amp which wastes much of its power as heat.

12voltvids 240W transformer then? The amp in the video is 2 50W at 8 ohms channels bridged for one channel of 200W at 8 ohms, correct?

simon Levett I still repair tvs however nobody wants to repair tvs these days. It is mostly audio equipment. That is the only thing that there is money left in and there isn't much left in that anymore.

12voltvids Well, Louis Rossman makes a good living with his company as component level computer repair. But reputation as a non authorized service center is required for enough work. With a good reputation on the internet, people will mail stuff in left and right. Terry DeWick has a lot of work as well as AudioClassics. Blueglow Electronics gets Mark more than enough business as well as xraytonyb, but like yourself he doesn't have his own repair business. There are so many people who are willing to pay less than the product is worth to have it repaired (still enough to charge 30/hr) that don't live near any repair places or people with rates that low.

Its just a shame that all the audio boards have different supply requirements. It would be good if they produced a line all running from a single ct ac supply rather than 12v, 24v etc.

This amp has to be pretty good. You never know 100% by time sound goes threw camera then computer speakers. But this time my computer sub is vibrating my couch at normal volume, this is not normal. P.S. Great little amp and video but can't explain how much I hate that California sounding girl at 10:00. She can send me sprinting across room to volume control faster then a Rick Roll. Both informative video and exercise so double upvote

dirkbonesteel This is the best sounding module I have listened to get by far. The intent will be to put this into an old receiver where the power amp is toast. I have an old akai amu02 that even though the amp is OK, it is only 25wpc using stk power modules. I think putting this in the cabinet and using the transformer from the original will make it kick some serious ass and it has a cool VFD power meter in the front to boot. This could be added internal and wired to the volume control and turn the old 27 watt amp into a 200 watt pounder. Stay tuned as that may be a project.

I like it. Something similar to that no one has done I know of. A 50's Bakelite radio with new paint, this amp set up. Add trebilo and up the gain to one channel, remote speaker jacks, put the extra controls in back and you have a seriously cool little 2 channel guitar amp

I asked once before but lost the commend, how would i power this module from DC power supplies what voltage would i need and i think iw ould need 2 24v dc supplies which i put in series right? i already tried a bit with 2 lab bench supplies both set to 24v and using the middle voltage point for the gnd connection but the signal was very quiet and distorted when i turned it up raising the voltage to 40v on both supplies just made the amp go into protet and not outputting anything

@@12voltvids well no, my unit just had a lose inductor on the right channel and as it happens that channel was the one I was testing, I soldered the inductor back in and the module works fine on 2 DC power supplies. The 2 supplies are in series and you have a 0v 24v and 48v potential. 0v goes to one of the ac24v inputs, 24v goes to gnd and 48v to the other 24v input. So that you get the +/-24v emulated if you measure from the 24v potential you get +/-24v and it works great :D

@@BadMax02_VR But when you feed it with AC 24 0 24 the voltage doubler on the board gives you 96 volts rail to rail and you are giving it 48. Yes it will put out sound but not at rated power.

@@12voltvids when i feel the thing anythung above 80v so 2x 40v the module goes into protect Mode because i have 2 50v labbench supplies and already tried it it works until about 38v and it then cuts out

@@12voltvids i have read the manual because of 2 thing first it says in the manual that the chip itself is only rated fpr +/-42v so it isnt even possible that it gives one chip 96v because that would be /+/-48v and it would go into OVP overvoltageprotection mode. 2.nd i wanted to see if it states something abouzt defects or so because one of my channels does not work at all it outputs 5-6v dc with no speaker attached and when there is something attached just nothing comes out no ac and no dc the other channel works fine. one 10 ohm smd resistor was complettly burned to crisp i replaced it but the channel or chip does the same thing and also the chip draws about 8w while doing nothing and gets very hot even just being a few second turned on withouzt heatsink the other chips stays cool for a minute or so and i can keep my finger on it for about a minute before it gets to hot but the defect channel chip just a few seconds and to hot. Do you maybe know what could be the problem is it the chip itself? or maybe some of the smd things because i ordered 2 of these chips one spare and one to replace the one but if it has to do something with the smd things than it would just do the same thing.

Can you power it whit 18650 battery's

No it requires 24 volt AC. That is 24 - 0 - 24. Once rectified that would become about +30 -30 volts. It might be possible to build the required voltages using about 14 18650 cells in series and using the 7th cell junction as the 0 volt point.

@@12voltvids there are Ebay pages which say it can also be run on 24v DC have you tried running it on DC? Because the voltage gets rectified immediately as I can see from the traces and would know if it works or if I saw it wrong

@@BadMax02_VR The voltage gets rectified into 4 separate supplies, 2 per channel with respect to the center tap. With 24 - 0 - 24 configuration that will produce about 48 volts per rail. So your +24 -24 swing on ac cycle will produce just under 48 volts DC. Do that for the other side of the transformer secondary, and you have another 48V. Negative of one cap to ground positive of that cap to negative of the second filter cap (so the mid point floats at around 48V) and on the positive terminal you have about 96 volts. That 96 volts becomes the switching voltage for the pwm signal. This is how you get the rated power of this module. Can you power it with lower voltage. You sure can but the output wattage will be greatly reduced because the PWM switching voltage is what derives your speaker voltage after it runs through the LPF to remove the switching signal. Make no mistake this amplifier delivers serious power at the rated input voltage.

@@12voltvids so how would I go to power that thing with a a couple of switch mode power supplies wired in series I have a few server supplies which each have 12v and I can wire them in series like I want because I have isolated them. How would I do that or is it even possible it should right?

Thanks for the video. Actually, this has two BTL chips, so its max 420W per channel... Bit on this board it cant do that.This is original data from nxp: SE 2 × 210 W, RL = 4 Ω (VDD = 41 V; VSS = −41 V) SE 2 × 235 W, RL = 3 Ω (VDD = 39 V; VSS = −39 V) SE 2 × 150 W, RL = 6 Ω (VDD = 41 V; VSS = −41 V) BTL 1 × 420 W, RL = 8 Ω (VDD = 41 V; VSS = −41 V) Not sure why only +- 30V when it can take +-41 and caps are rated @50v, I guess that filter is not that good. The chip itself is not even close to its maximum

Of course the transformer I used to demo will not deliver 200 watts. The module is rated at that but of course needs an appropriately sized transformer. I use what I have on hand. These are demo videos, I am not putting this module into service. I give them away when I am done with them.

@ I can still measure the power output given the voltage supplied, but without a big enough transformer, capable of supplying the required power the am will not produce what it is capable of. On lower voltage it will still perform just as well, with less output power.

@ The results I get are going to show what can be achieved with this setup. Since I am not putting this into service any time soon, I was not about to invest a large sum on a transformer, which costs much more then the module just to push it to the limit. It shows what you. I have a few scrap receivers kicking around now, and I will likely take a big transformer out of one when I scrap it, and can re-visit this module to show it's potential, but when I did this test all I had available was the transformer I had on hand.

YUKI JINJUJI I have a great mic in the studio for voice over but in the shop I just use the camera mic as it is right next to me. The camera doesn't have a microphone input. There is a hot shoe that has inputs but of course that accessory is not available anymore. Camera is 3 years old.
