A wolf does not run for fun. It expends too much energy. A cat lays in a sunbeam because they are mostly asleep between hunts and it helps regulate their body temp. You and Ricky are technically both correct. ANimals "like" certain things, because it is hardwirted into them. THe human animal is the same to an extent but we do things for fun that make zero sense biologically. Like jumping out of plans and crap.
The highlight of my Fridays! I got a feeling the regular XFM shows that I fall asleep to every night will be replaced by your videos once you get into the seasons. Next time I start over again at S1 it'll be your content! Also thank you Rusty for not including a picture of the Huntsman Spider when they were talking about that. If you don't know what it is you don't need to know and if you do you never want to see one again! Harmless, sure, but so damn terrifying. The size of those things and the things they do. The jumping (LONG jumps) and clinging on is right out of the Alien movies!

When Karl said there are so many spiders we can’t name them all my brains first thought was “George, Brian, Gary” then I realised he meant species 🤣
Tether ball is basically swing ball, yes. Though swing ball normally uses a tennis ball
46:35 Animals "like" to do those things because it activates their instincts. There's no conscious thought process behind it, they do them because millions of years of evolution has made them inclined towards doing those things for a variety of reasons. Example: dogs like playing catch because it activates their chase instinct. They don't do it because they "like" to do it. Reptiles "like" to bath in the sun and under artificial lights because they need external sources of heat to maintain their body temperature. "Liking" is a concept that requires higher brain functions that most animals do not have.
@CommissionerSleer
2 ай бұрын
Mammals, birds and reptiles all have cerebral cortexes. Is there anything in the human brain that those animals don't have that leads you to think we have higher brain functions that they don't have? A reptile sunbathing is probably indeed an example of a need rather than a like. However, a dog lying on its back enjoying a belly rub.... Where is the evolutionary need there? I suggest dogs and cats many other animals do indeed like being stroked (whether they've evolved to like it or not) - by another species no less - and for the same reason we do: it feels good. And if higher brain function is required to like things then that's evidence those animals have higher brain functions (as suspected by their almost identical brains and nervous systems).
@DistractedArachnid
2 ай бұрын
@@CommissionerSleerAgreed. Animals also enjoy drugs and alcohol, just like humans do. The most plausible reason being that they just like it.
@CommissionerSleer
2 ай бұрын
@@DistractedArachnid Yes. Great example. Even bees have been known to deliberately get drunk to the detriment of themselves and the hive. Anybody that's ever known an animal knows they like things and dislike others and will seek out and do things just for pleasure. The only 'higher brain function' I see humans having that no other animals do is that we've developed complex languages that allow us to philosophise. As far as I can tell, apes, crows, dolphins, elephants, octopuses, etc, haven't done that. But everything else our brains do (think, feel, hope, fear, pleasure, pain, plan, predict. etc)... animal brains do too to some extent or other.
@CommissionerSleer

@@bleepbloop6234 All the same components. Different sizes but same design and origin. Do you think humans have some brain component(s) that reptiles don't? A component that causes some sort of higher brain function? If so, what?
@CommissionerSleer
2 ай бұрын
@@bleepbloop6234 You're the one playing games. You've turned "almost identical" into "identical". You're also setting aside birds and mammals for now for no reason, which are even more almost identical to humans than reptiles. "Do you really believe that, for example, a snake's brain is "almost identical" to a human brain? " Yes, within any practical sense. They only things more identical in the entire universe are the brains of even more closely related animals. Apart from size and shape, they have all the same components. That's what I meant (and you know it, you're just trying to be clever by splitting hairs and arguing with a strawman). And that's what matters. "I could show both brains to a child of 5 and they would understand that the two structures are quite obviously different in many ways." Apart from the size and shape... then you would be as wrong as a child of 5. It speaks volumes that, even in your imagination, you need to stoop to a child of 5 to find someone to agree with your assessment based on colours and shapes rather than functions and interfaces. Anyway, now that I've answered your puerile question (yes is and always was the answer), you answer mine: what has a human brain got that an iguana's brain hasn't?
The first few episodes of series 2 will be a bit rocky, if I recall within the first 7 episodes, Karl isn't there twice and 1 episode is a "best of" that can be skipped. But when he gets back THATS when things really get going

"Not in an American way". Everyone over here would know what Karl means by that (notice how they didn't even query what he meant). Hi. I’m just going to offer a comment about the funnel web spiders if I may as I’m a Sydney resident. The male funnel web spider is far more “venomous” than the female but is not aggressive. The larger female is far more aggressive but they do not possess venom strong enough to cause problems to humans. I hope nobody thinks I’m being a smart ass… I just want to be factual. ❤️

@@CMDRRustyDog semi-tangent: In an early episode, Steve was talking about things people don’t do any more and cited “snuff” as an example. You put up a Hedges snuff tin and I have one! I bought it probably in the early ‘80s - horrible stuff. Many years later it turned up during a house move and I started using it to stash small objects. The paint has long since departed and it’s pitted and looks a bit like the moon but it is a cheap, 40yr-old tin that has remained functional and stood the test of time.
I like the idea of having an average Joe in athletic events with top-tier athletes as a comparison. It'd provide perspective for everyone, and you could give the average guy a prize for destroying himself, lol
American Idol is still going (for some reason)
Adam Lambert tours with Queen now
Ricky is implying that unlike humans animals do not have our level of cognition - to 'like' something conveys an emotive reason for doing something - animals do not have that even if it appears to you that it does, there's always an evolutionary reason, a trace, why animals behave the way they do
I'm with Karl on the money thing. It's not money, in itself, that makes people happy. It's that life would be a whole lot worse without money. He's right about that. Nobody wants to be homeless, and it takes money to have a home. That idea. I'm with Karl on that. Rusty did a good job editing. Mandy made the Karl show the best show of all. hearing someones reaction to learning our UK phrases reaction to "bumfluff" is always hilarious
Bumfluff is absolutely the default term in the UK. I don’t think I’ve ever heard anyone ever call it anything else.
If I had been listening to Ricky Gervais in the day saying "and Karl Pilkington, for the last time, I'm afraid" I would have been somewhat anxious. Until he said they'd all be back. 45:42. He was talking about wild animals, and more specifically arachnids and insects. You do have a point in this context, tho. Many mammals and birds have fun, however, there are very few other species that do. Birds and mammals are far superior to any other species. Still, there are a lot of outlying types, and I fully agree with you, I just think it’s so few out of the millions, it’s a valid point by Ricky. Edit: especially to this particular conversation, this spider.🌿🌸
1:15:41 I think he meant to say "boil-in-the bag-food".
I think what Ricky means is that animals don't have any conception of liking something. It's instinct. But... I suppose the concept of liking stems from biology and instinct.

46:50. Yea, but animals, especially insects and arachnids mostly only do what they need to do. Still, this really brings up a question in my mind. If an ant is fully full, and content will she look around for a second to take it all in, or just keep working? I follow a couple people on TT that deal mostly in jumping spiders, and it’s clear they are intelligent. Ok, you have won me over, Rick was demonstrably wrong!🌿🌸

47:47. This information is completely wrong. There is a spider that lives underwater, has an air bubble around it’s abdomen(cus they stick it out of the water to collect new air in its hairs), eats little fish. There are thousands of funnel web spiders all over the world. It’s in the name, the web is shaped like a funnel. An other kind is an orb weaving spider, the ones you walk through on a hike, like a dream catcher shape, which is where the humans got the idea.
