I can't say I felt like they were fake-out deaths at the end because I don't feel like the game was telling me KOS-MOS was dying. Shion certainly thinks so, but it just felt like an action scene to me. KOS-MOS said that she could make it back to the Elsa in under one minute, Ziggy agreed, so I believed her. And then in the atmosphere the mystery seemed to be more about, first, what she could do to save the ship, and second, what is the deal with this blue-eyed KOS-MOS, not whether she would survive. Thanks so much for doing this, though. I adore this series from the moment I played it as the first game I ever had for my PS2 as a teenager, and to replay through it with this series has been super enjoyable. I'm so glad you guys enjoyed it so much. It was of course fun to see you be "wrong" about things I know the answer to, but you also taught me about plenty of references and things that I never knew (the Marienkind story, for example). I can't wait to continue playing through 2 and 3 with the return of this series! (now do I ride the momentum to replay 2 right now or wait until it features here, hm...)

As always mind is blown listening to you guys, and Keith was a fantastic guest! One thing that sttod out to me was when Cassen mentioned not noticing Mizrahi referring to Sakura as his daughter. I realized that most of the player audience for this game probably didn't go into it as analytically minded and anthropolgically versed as you guys did so most (at least western audience) probably heard "my Sakura" and assumed it was the name of a person not the actual flower to derive symbolism from 😆. Xenosaga is probably the only game I can think of I truely loved for the story alone, and you guys make me appreciate it so much more.

Thanks for this whole podcast series. Xenosaga 1 had so much ambition that it's easy to forget minor stuff that eventually plays out later in the series. I know you are taking a break from xenosaga but I will be expecting whenever you decide to go for episode 2. And speaking of episode 2. Please don't let this apparently popular opinion of dislike bring you down on that game! I personally think it was more fun as a game than episode 1. And the scene direction is such an improvement too. For everything that some people seem to complain about it, i honestly could find similar faults with episode 1. Play the game with an open mind and you will enjoy it.

Thank you for playing Xenosaga and those podcasts, All things I will now write is in timeline of Episode 1 so there will be no spoilers for later episodes, no worry. First of all it's more clear in Xenosaga anime and it's confirmed in kinda Perfect Works kind of book for Xenosaga that chaos' hands glow because he decided to help save everyone with his power, so both he and Kos-mos makes Elsa save entering the Second Militia. Second I highly recommend you both to watch Xenosaga Drama CD before playing Episode 2, there was project of translation for it with using Xenosaga I&II graphic. Why to watch it? there are a lot of reasons, Takahashi himself took part in creating this story and beside Pied Piper (Ziggy's backstory) I think it's best part of Xenosaga story it takes place in story before attack on Kukai Fundation and whole Song og Nephilim segment. Second, there are a lot additional scenes about chaos, how he meet Elsa's crew, Jr and Gainun's relationship with him, more MOMO relationship with Jr and Ziggy, a little more glimpse at Shion's past and the most important thing I think this Drama CD does is an introduction for two U-TIC characters that were very poorly handled in Episode 2 PS2 version, and Drama CD gives some depth to them both. Here is link to first 2 CDs kzread.info/head/PL7H6QPIXwbUSENLm8r-1Odf1RDadjB74g I'm trying to finish edition and translation of the end od CD 2 and whole CD3 on my channel, it should be done in around two weeks I hope. You don't need to watch Xenosaga anime, it's mostly retelling of Episode 1 with one change that there is no Cherencov story and Virgil dies later during attack on Fundation, so he sticks with the Party little longer. I'm looking forward your playing in next episodes. For all those years, around 17-18 by now I loved Xenosaga but always thought about it as pretty not finished story, but when I heard you thinking and talking about plots, characters I have noticed that all questions you made during this podcast, they all are answered, in game or Xenosaga III Perfect Guide and it's amazing. Anyway if Encephalon part was amazing for you then you goint to love episode 3 1st disc, for me it's most amazing of Xenosaga story and it always hits me like Hammer how good this is.

I thought it was chaos that gave KOSMOS those wings. After Nephilim asked him what he wants to do, he chose to actively intervene in the events going on instead of simply reacting. And he shielded KOSMOS from burning up on re-entry like she was supposed to Edit: and to add, that was an immensely important moment because it cemented that he was someone beyond what anyone imagined him to be

Gentlemen! Excellently done I enjoyed your thoughts at the ending most of all. I remember finishing the game for the first time, elated but also a little concerned. Objectively, the ending does not "resolve" the story: it is not clear even now who the villain is, or really what anyone's "goal" is. We have a handful of characters who have been pushed to "grow" but on a personal basis we don't even know any of them as well as we knew Cherenkov if you think about it. So the second the credits rolled I thought, "Episode 1 *indeed* " because it only now feels like "the party" is formed. I'll save my thoughts on the rest of the series, but the giant cliffhanger(s) at the end here are probably why I played and replayed this game obssesively until the sequel released

I played the game when it first came out, having been a massive fan of Xenogears (even running a fansite for it) and will admit to quite a level of disappointment with Episode I, largely because of the lack of resolution. At the time the fact that we had a game that built up and introduced a lot of stuff and clearly had a massive amount of ambition didn't change the fact that it wasn't a complete story and any resolution was years away. That and the very bad press Episode II got led to me not even buying that game when it came out although when Episode III came out I bought both games (getting the now extremely rare Episode III which goes for hundreds of dollars for a mere $30). After playing through all 3 games my opinion of Episode I did go up considerably as having the full story showed how really well planned things were from the very beginning.

Great job as usual guys, it was a lot of fun following you on this go through Xenosaga Episode I, much like it was to follow you for Xenogears, Final Fantasy Tactics, Vagrant Story and various other games. My only disappointment in this finale was no discussion of the ending songs. Fitting with all the discussion of pain in the end of the game that we have a song named after that. Quite possibly my favorite song from the game (Gnosis is also up there for me). Kokoro is a pretty good song as well and is a motif we've heard numerous times throughout the game. Alas this is it for Joanne Hogg singing for the franchise after 4 songs across this and Xenogears. And a farewell to Yasunori Mitsuda as well although Yuki Kajiura does a fine job taking his place (and even surpasses him). I do hope to become a patron soon, ideally in time for that vote on whatever you cover after Silent Hill. Incidentally enough Nier Automata which you mentioned is a game sitting on my shelf, waiting to be played for the first time after I finish my play through of the Xenosaga series inspired by your podcast (in the late stages of Episode III now). While Xenosaga II is a downgrade in virtually every way in comparison to Xenosaga I, it does still at least have a pretty good story which is your main focus anyway.

In that scene where Virgil dies, it never seemed to me like Febronia contacted him and made him a testament or something like that. (Which seems fitting from what you guys already deciphered from Xenosaga's story) But instead to me it always seemed like his final thought was from the past. Maybe a woman he once loved, which now seems strange, considering that we now know that Febronia was a realian, who he hates. It also wouldn't make sense for him to be calling her by her name if he didn't know her. He calls out "Feb". I don't want to say any more to spoil things, but think about it this way, Febronia wants people to face their life and pain to get stronger and where they need to be. But when Virgil died and became a Testament, he didn't get closer to her.

Xenosaga Ep 1 was really good with the one serious issue being the combat system in my opinion. PLAYING the game is such an awful chore but the story Takahashi and his wife made is again SO GOOD. I cannot wait I NEED IT NOW! The analysis of ep 2 and 3. I finally got a job thats taken up far too much of my time that I stopped playing Xenosaga with you which is disappointing to me. I was excited to follow along in game with you but tis life. The way you formulate these videos showing cutscenes are seriously diving deep into each line make's it easy to follow along without playing and I couldn't be more appreciative of your work and everyone else who has contributed/done their own work. Retrograde Amnesia, TJTheEmperor and everyone else. I said this in the Xenogears Finale. I cried. In appreciation of your work. I'm completely fine with admitting it. I cried out of appreciation. I am so thankful. Xenogears is and has been my favorite game since release in 98 so I was 13 at the time, I recognized that there was SO MUCH more than I could understand going on and never looked into it for whatever reason until you were about halfway through your dive into it. It's kind of like the work you've done here has filled a hole in...my soul is probably going too far but there was a hole that you have filled and then some and I'm so excited to learn more. These podcasts have been fulfilling. There is a necessity to these podcasts. I almost couldn't be more broke financially. I feel horrible I can't support outside of commenting and liking. You deserve so much more than what you've got. These views and likes are literally criminally low. This message is so long already and I want to say so much more though I don't know what else to say. Thank you so much.

I haven’t played subsequent games (although I am looking forward to them now) but I had a slightly different take on the ending: In the atmosphere scene, especially because of the lead up, my takeaway was that what happened in the descent wasn’t Kos-Mos at all. They show Chaos already in the mech hanger and it really feels like he’s struggling internally, debating on actually taking an action and saving the party and “revealing himself?” Kos-Mos walks past him and he actively tries to stop her, I think he’s like no I’ve got this. But she goes anyway. Then you get the scene with the angel wings and you see the feathers on the cockpit window, which is Chaos’s entire motif, he uses them in most of his tech attacks in the game. As Chaos uses his powers, you get that scene of chaos with his hands glowing and then it cuts to (insert xenogears reference here), windhelm, and Nephilim. I took this as the kind of trope where you have an all powerful being that can’t get involved without subsequent (potentially dire) consequences. And him using his powers in this way “changed the game” and alerted other major players. Because as Nephilim says, Kos-Mos is important to Chaos (although we don’t know why) and he couldn’t permit her sacrifice. Hence the intervention. The only thing is, because she went out there, it permits him to disguise his intervention from the party? Although I don’t know why that would be important.

Also, @54:45, another reason for the separation could be that it’s a safety feature. If the station is disabled and about to crash into the planet’s atmosphere, separating into tiny pieces would increase the surface area for burn-up on reentry and reduce the impact on the planet.

Because having just recently finished the second, Requiem, it became apparent to me that both games are two halves - distinct halves, no less - of one giant story that is one of the BEST stories told in the medium. Hyperbolic of me? It's just my opinion. But there's lots for the lads to chew on. A Plague Tale gives you great spectacle, great characters, great drama, great themes, and tonnes of symbolism for them to cover. And if you don't cover the games any time soon on the channel, I just recommend both games to anyone reading this comment.

Very enlightening look at this game. Honestly every time I look back at these games there's always something new I discover and you all brought up new stuff for me to look into. I look forward to when you tackle the rest of this series. As for episode 2 when you get to it... Yeah there's a decent story there, but like I think Lorerunner said it feels like a first draft. I'd argue episode 2 is also kind of a nothing game as well because a lot of it is meaningless filler that does little to nothing to advance the plot. Luckily it's short and the little bits of story that are there are pretty good. Just don't expect much and look forward to Episode 3. Oh and you can skip the post game dungeons unless your a masochist who likes the brutal challenge of episode 2's combat. Speaking of this game's combat it actually introduces a couple mechanics that the Xenoblade series would refine, Break Topple Launch in particular, so it's kind of fun to mess around with the earliest form of those systems. Oh and I gotta mention the music because it is my favorite and least favorite soundtracks of the series. The Cutscene soundtrack is amazing and a great collection of Yuki Kajiura's earlier experimental work, and I kind of like it a bit more than Episode 3's which is more subtle but still amazing by comparison. The gameplay soundtrack is more of a mixed bag. I actually really like the battle music in this game, the boss theme in particular is very underrated, but the level themes go from not that memorable to ear grating garbage. It's not complete trash and has some highlights, but yeah that composer definitely was being rushed on this one. Heck if you look at the cutscene soundtrack titles it's pretty obvious they were planning on using quite a few of those songs in a completely different context than they did in the final game. Heck some of the songs like both versions of Bitter didn't even play in the game. Oh and you will not convince me otherwise that "In the beginning there was"/"Fatal Fight"/"Image theme of Xenosaga 2" isn't the theme song for Xenosaga as a whole. Oh and when you finish episode 2 check out a Missing Year and Pied Piper as well. They help explain some things going into episode 3 and you'll be a little less lost at the beginning of that game if you do.

I think aspects of Episode II certainly are filler (a pointless car chase scene, and a dungeon in disc 2 which is universally considered as nothing more than padding), but it also has some really good content for characters like Junior, MOMO and Albedo and provides a significant new character to the mix (whom I won't discuss further to hide spoilers). I too am very high on the soundtrack, Yuki Kajiura's work in particular (the main theme in tracks like Opening Theme, Sweet Song and Sakura #4 is amazing stuff), but actually don't mind the other music in the game that much either. Some early game tracks are rather lame but ones used in disc 2 areas in particular I enjoy. I too really like the boss theme, far better than what we got here in Episode I (no boss theme at all!).

  • @SacrificAbominat

@@quiddity131 I'd say most of the dungeons are filler even if they have some story relevance. The one you go through twice for summer and winter doesn't exactly have any significance to the story or characters. It's just level padding to get to the story bits. Heck most of the dungeons on disc 2 just have cutscenes at the beginning and end with little to no story in-between even if it takes place in a very story relevant area. It's as if the developers were more interested in making "cool" level designs first and then just slapped story relevance onto them after the fact. Episode 1 and 3 placed a lot of story significance over their dungeons that nothing really feels like filler in those 2 games. Heck that one dungeon in 3 where there is no boss fight and the character at the end said he was just there to distract you while the other bad guy was executing his plan had more way story significance than most of the dungeons in 2. Also I really don't like the puzzles in this game they make that one padding dungeon on disc 2 even more of a slog because they happen in almost every room. I do have a soft spot for episode 1's battle theme, but actually having multiple battle themes for character battles, mech battles, minibosses, and bosses really helps in this game. I think it's mostly the music from disc 1 that is more ear grating. Second Miltia and the summer dungeon in particular are my least favorite songs, the winter one was pretty good though. Whereas I actually like quite a few of the dungeon themes on the second disc, even if they don't exactly fit the series in terms of tone. It's the worst soundtrack in the series more because it doesn't fit the tone that well, but you can still enjoy some of the in game music on it's own.

Xenosaga Ep 2 will make you understand why people have such a negative reception of the series. Part 1 is actually amazing, Part 2 repeats too much without doing enough new stuff and the fights are just sooooo much longer that it's nearly unbearable. Even just a generic random battle with some goons can take upwards of 20 minutes towards the end of the game. Part 3 though... pretty good. I still like the first part best.

    1. Albedo's mech name is also interesting 2. Proto markebah has very interesting things you have missed I think. The first line of defence are mechs, slowly merging or at least coworking with gnosis creatures. Also there is a part where you come out of a door and there are two twin like mechs on each side with different colours, which is related to there names. One of them is an illnes some sort, other rhymes to it but also a popular japanese music performer from the times the game is made. 3. The second line of defence being mostly demons ... like classic gothic versions of the concept ... devils is also noteworthy. Especially later meeting the last line of reactor defence being fallen angels, both esthatically and title-wise. 4. Maybe subjective, but having the Erde Kaiser in my toolset at this point really gave a different reading of the title of the game. It was enough to have it, knowing I can easily X enemies in front of me to make me play the game by the rules. Previously I had difficulties and put it down for days after certain places and encounters. And even with this power alone you can't defeat the the final boss and using it once stops you anything else with shion (no healing for example). 5. I think the creators are in a narrative trap with Kos-Mos. Around that time was a topos of miysterius, jack of all trades, socially damaged, beautiful but deadly girls. Sometimes I think this comes from Firefly. Kos-Mos is the same and never ... never could any writer do something with it because it cant change, if it changes the whole story is siderailed. If we are in rewrite fanfiction territoy Kosmos should have said to Shion Good morning instead about succesful mission signing an inner change. Can't do that in this topos. 6. Interestingly Virgil lives much longer in the anime series and works with the team until the battle on second miltia. In many places he is the military like personal instead of Cherenkov, but Kos-mos uses him as collateral none the less. Looking forward to the series about X2.

    6. My recollection was disliking Xenosaga the Animation, especially because Cherenkov's role is so much smaller and his storyline may be my favorite in all of Episode I. Although I would be interested in seeing more Virgil and the dynamics that would come into play if there was more time early on before KOS-MOS killed him. Been so long since I watched it I can't recall the details.

I couldn't take any of the dramatic KOS-MOS scenes even half-seriously. You can't have your messiah god/machine figure dressed like THAT in these moments that are supposed to shatter your understanding of the world up to that point. You structure your whole damn brilliant story to culminate in these huge shocks, then you tear it all down making your CAMERA'S MAIN AIM TO INFORM THE AUDIENCE OF THE COLOR OF HER PANTIES! It's comedic gold!
