The irony of the Tau beginning as brutal warring savages, being unified by a mysterious new leadership with strange influential powers, and exploding into a space-faring empire and the Imperium looking at this and going "huh that's weird oh well" can't be overstated. At this rate they'll realize something is a little familiar about the time Chaos Tau come bludgeoning down the gates of the Imperial palace.

Those with proper clearance may be interested to know that the disgraced Inquisitor Raleigh remarked in his notes a resemblance between the Ethereal pheromone organ and a comparable organ found within the Q'orl swarm queens. While it is true that the queens use pheromonal control to command lesser Q'orl, the suggestion that the Ethereal caste somehow obtained and incorporated the organ into their own biology is nonsense, given the Q'orl reside exclusively within the Segmentum Pacificus, the far side of the galaxy to the Tau. The former Inquisitor rambles further on some elaborate Eldar plot to uplift the Tau species, but the ravings of heretics are not for the ears of the pious, and their words require only the scrutiny of the pyre.

The Tau are dangerous to the Imperium, but the threat they pose is... strange. The closest alternative threat similar to themselves would be the corrupting nature of the great enemy lurking within the Eye of Terror and the Warp in general, but while the foul daemon offers power and enslavement the Tau offer Progress and Liberty. Both have the power to undermine the wills of humans away from the Emperor and Terra's Holy Light... but one cannot blame the powers that be for focusing on the Slaves of Daemons rather then the Tau. I mean say what you will about the Tau, they've never invaded a world and flayed its entire population because the warleader of their group wanted a new human skin cape that better matched his brand new, formal wear children skin gloves.

And then Farsight became a thing. What i find funny is in Dawn of War, the tau commander (Okais) will off the orks a truce but you can hear it in his voice that hi is under no illusion that it will work and he is just saying it as a formality.

This is, hilariously, more or less what happened. The t'au first found a group of orks on a planet, assumed they were not a space faring race, studied their language for a bit, and then sent a rather unfortunate water cast member down. He spoke the language as fluently as if he was a proper ork, and appealed to them, telling them they could fight even bigger wars across the stars. The warboss stopped, cleaved him in half, and laughed.

Dude I'm a massive lore nerd and I still sit and watch this all out because despite knowing the info myself you make it way more interesting to get through.

It is a theory of cause, but it's clearly not an unfounded one. We know that the ethereals are different then the others, we know that they lead the others, we know that the one example (that we know of) where a portion of the Tau have been separated from the Tau they have changed pretty drastically. So while it is of cause a theory and not proven fact, it is definetly a valid one

By the Throne! You used 'sapient' correctly! Instead of 'sentient' like everyone else does now, which just means 'to feel'. Since 'sapient' means 'to be self aware'. An example of sentient life would be animals, but some definitions posit that all multicellular life 'feels' just not all in the same way. Sapient life is like us humans, self aware, conscious beings. I would like to point out that no one seems to notice that the Tau look striking like the biological race Necrontyr and like the Necrontyr they had a species wide compulsion for internecine conflict. But most importantly, like the Necrontyr of old the Tau are almost psychically neutral.

Hope is optimism born of inexperience. The Earth Caste is my favorite non-military group in the setting. Where humans fear what they don't know already, Aeldari think they know everything already, Necrons DO know everything already, and Tyranids make new things purely on instinct, Earth Caste scientists innovate gleefully and come up with all sorts of neat stuff. Better still, that technology hasn't proven their undoing...yet. It's a race between the Warp drives and the AI drones to see what gets to backfire on the Tau big time. ...The drones are cute as hell, though.

While rail guns are obviously the show stealers, I'll give shoutouts to the ion weapons for just being straight up death rays and smart missiles for giving me Macross flashbacks.

I've played Tau for about 2 maybe 3 years now and man was this a great listen. The point of view, the voice behind it, the content that was pushed, all of it was fantastic. And I learned new stuff about my favorite faction as well! Like that there's more Auxiliary races to the Tau than JUST the Kroot and Vespids. Would love to see the next Tau video, if you do one, about Damocles and such like you mentioned at the end of this one!

Agreed. Claims that they don’t fit into the grimdark aesthetic forget how the lore lays out how they evolved and developed technology in “a bubble”. Tau deliver a unique variety to 40k, and if they bring new people into the hobby b/c they wanna go full Gundam, I’m all for it.

Same here. Thats the main reason i play them because their aesthetic (for me at least) is the most future sci fi of all the factions. Eldar have to much mystecism attached to them, Necrons are joint to but im thinking more along the lines of biologcal races, Astra militarum just feel like modern armor just rearragned slightly and the space marine have too much religious emperor worship donning their stuff for me to remeber they are actually scifi supersoilders.

This is by far the best treatment of the Tau I've come across yet. Gloria in excelsis Terra!

The fact that this channel has only 100k subs is almost insulting to the man - lets start an expansion crusade to get him to 250k - Spread the word for the Greater Good!

This is gonna sound crazy, but what if they were created by Szarekh during his exile? As opponents for the Aeldari, with complementary abilities.

@Knuckle Suckle Wait a sec. Where did THAT come into play? It alwsys seemed so full of optimism and hope and Iroh... I never sensed any existential dread. An army's worth of onion cutting ninjas when Iroh celebrates his son's birthday, perhaps, but never dread.

Just like that you make them fit the universe in a better way than many writers have managed. Keeping all the key canon elements but presenting in way that makes them far more suspicious without being comically evil.

Probably because they unite different species (i.e. peoples) under one banner, strive to create unison and use propaganda, so a comparison with the ancient terran tribe of the Soviet bloc is not too far fetched.

The strong importance they put upon social harmony and high centralized control. Aswell the lack of wealth classes in exchange of labor classes, where the importance of doing work as a whole is placed above the individual performances of each member of said class. If they do use a form of biological scent control, then similar to communism. They use a form of authoritative control, scent control for tau/ military force for humans, to enforce social cooperation between individuals and their state guided path. Utilitarianism does fit better then socialist, but the underlying possibility of essentially mind control may make that skin deep. While imperialist fits, but usually assumes a desire to acquire materials for themselves before trying to uplift the locals. While the Tau seem to put uplifting the locals before the materials, unless uplifting is impossible.

Same! I haven't bought any models in 15+ years but I listen to every one of these lore videos instantly! (and usually more than just once..)

I greatly enjoy the commitment to presenting the doublethink and perspnal failings of the narrator when duscussing the Tau.

@@neon-lake It would seem that is simply the lot of the psychically-sensitive in the galaxy following the emergence of the Chaos Gods. Even the psychically weak Tau have been shown to fall prey. For the true good of the galaxy, i.e. a Chaos-less future in which one could safely exist as a thinking, feeling creature at some point in the future, it would seem that we ought to be rooting for the Necrons or the Tyranids. It would seem that only they could undo the immaterial horrors borne of humanity & the eldar.

Im 10 seconds into the Video and already love it! "Optimism is poison" - clearly on of the best ways to describe a human mindset inside the 40k universe!

Excellent content as always. Whenever I listen to one of your videos I imagine a Remembremancer that is on the border of being heretical. They want to know more and they know the limitations of their role. It makes the words so much more meaningful.

I know this is probably unlikely but I've always wanted to hear lore about the Jericho Reach, the Deathwatch operations there, Hive Fleet Dagon, the Omega Vault, and the Achilus Crusade, all elements from the tabletop rpg I used to play. LOVED the setting/system. Would love to here the remembrancer's voice recounting lore from my favorite rpg!

Every video you make reveals details I never even conceived of in regards to each faction. I love it.

T'au are FAR WORSE threat to m40 Imperium than Horus / Chaos/ Tyranids ever could hope to be. They show what m30 Imperium COULD have been and m20 humanity possibly had been.

I mean, historically they sent out legions of murder robots and anything the murder robots couldn't kill, we signed none aggression pacts & treaties with. Then the murder bots decided to murder us and almost killed every organic in the galaxy. Real mystery why during Long Night so many alien species decided to kick humanity in the dick.

Your videos got me into painting again and deep into 40k lore. Also got my 2 little dudes into it as well.

Deep sea fish are weird until we finally finish poisoning the ocean I'm not ruling anything out

I really wish gw would go back and fix some of the more egregious tau lore

I don't know, it seems like the Oculus has a bit of a soft spot for the Tau. I speak not of heresy, or at least not heresy outright, but even he acknowledges that he seems to criticize them less than he does others.
