The die rolling here seems very emblematic of my time with XCOM. "A 99% chance to hit with two shots and I'm standing next to the alien? Not a chance in the world that will hit."

Amazing episode! I loved so many things about it, but let me just highlight a couple that stoodd out: 1) how you guys explained and modeled the rules in the beginning without looking at every single possible situation; and 2) the "in-depth enough" analysis of the game and how it captures the essence of the X-COM series. Thanks a bunch for such an entertaining show to watch! Keep up the great work with your show and happy gaming to us all! Kind regards from Brazil!

I had my doubts about this game and the app to it but after watching your guy's game play of it I changed my mind completely. The quick decision making seems fun and also the fact each player seems to have abilities to help the other which makes this a very amazing co-opt game. Though it does seem like one needs to make good choices that first round. lol

arakuss1 Yeah, right?! I didn't have any doubts that I want this game (I live in Brazil and the Brazilian Portuguese version of the game is set to release "soon"). I read everyone talking crap about the app and I understand the point, but that timed phase just gives that panic feeling that people that are trying to save the world from Aliens would certainly feel. :) And yes, this video shown me better the scientist function. He can help everyone. The game seems like a great coop game.

João José My doubts mainly come from seeing tech used in gaming from way back. Some games did it ok but most didn't In fact one my favorite board games as a kid was Dark Tower. My main worry was the app taking away from the interaction and board game play. I really had not been able to see an actual game play of it till last night. Mostly seen just reviews of it. Its more the game design not the app part I see as its strength. I especially like the balancing of managing ones own tasks as well as aiding other players roles.

X-Comm:tBG strategy 101: Lesson 1: spend, at a minimum, ½ of your Emergency Funds on round 1. Use this $ to empty the solder reserves, buy 1 new Interceptor, then tell the Research Science they have 7 OR 8 Scientists this turn(depending on chosen difficulty). Lesson 2: After Round 2, if the "Empty Emergency Funds" Crisis Card comes up, *ALWAYS* take it, then take all the funds that turn(Crisis Cards resolve after Emergency Funds become available, as they happen in different phases) Lesson 3: The Round 1 mission is irrelevant; never assign more that 2 squaddies to it. Lesson 4: Don't Get Hurt

The one thing they walk around without talking about is that the master plans affect what the app rolls up. In onslaught, as we see here, Aliens have 3 times the chance to spawn a base invader, with a much lower ufo modifier. Also, other plans focus on a specific continent till it grinds it into dust and then moves on with its focus, or another that spreads way across the board for panic. I wish they had gotten to talk about this because it's really one of the ways you need to focus to make sure you win, is to counter-act specifically what the aliens are focusing on. In my games (I've played this dozens of times, onslaught is the roughest btw) we would have boosted the soldiers as much as possible because they need to go out every turn. But if you like co-op games you should def pick this up. One of my only true love for co-op games.

Robert Mair The game is actually not difficult to explain, it gives you hints even during the game...but it's timed and could get extremely frenetic, and also heavily dice dependent, so it can be frustrated at times.

  • 9 жыл бұрын

Robert Mair One good thing from the app is that it has that Tutorial Mode. You can instead of explain all the rules before, sit down with your group and begin a tutorial mode game. During the tutorial the game explains everything, it doesn't have a timer and everyone can get the hang of it.

It seems like they pulled off an excellent version of XCom as a board game man the timed countdowns adding to the overall panic and stress...I suspect this will become a Pandemic beater - coop and some individual stuff, some real time things and some untimed, some budget management some fighting...a really nice mix Best coop game I have seen played

João José I think the first round is the most important in the game. Its when you set up your strategy for the entire game. A bad first turn is capital. Some may consider it a failure in the game mechanics.

Guys I really hope you will review the expansion which is in its printing phase now and may become available before the end of the year. I really loved your way of playing but hats off to Aaron who basically explained the whole game mechanics like it was as easy as eating an ice cream. :-) Some words about how you guys tackled the game. The result of your very bad first round, which spelled doom for the XCom, comes from your inexperience. More specifically, Dave did realize the importance to save money and didn't invest much in the first round but you still were tight on the budget (which is normal if Lincoln doesn't grab a few credits from the Emergency Funding). So, while Lincoln didn't take the funding, you knew you had no new recruits to replace the losses and you STILL had 3 enemies in the base, at least one of which a major threat. The UFO global threat was very low and here comes the greatest of all mistakes. While Aaron did all he could with 6 units in 2 tasks, his units couldn't be moved without the Central Officer (Nicky) intervening with its ability. This is what should have happened: Nicky moves the UFO from orbit to a low-panic continent (any) and Lincoln tries to shoot it down... but Nicky shhould have also grabbed 1 or 2 soldiers from the mission and moved them to the reserves, then grabbed them again and let Aaron use them to defend the base. Though the mission wouldn't advance, the base would have taken less damage and the salvage would have helped Dave's research. Unfortunately, the damage to the base in the crises should have been Skyranged.... too many mistakes altogether and in the first game are nearly impossible to fix. At the end of the day, Lincoln is the Commander so it's his fault. :-) These are decisions to be taken dynamically (you don't always get aliens in base AFTER you commit soldiers to th emission) and in a matter of seconds. The difficulty, even for the experienced player, is EXTREME.

Hello guys, You did a great job with this, but I really wish you would have started with the tutorial. However, I learned a great deal from the mission you guys did do so thanks for that. It is a huge help. One thing I noticed is pause was not covered nor what Nikki was doing on the screen. She would sometimes touch a red dot and tell you guys things but I could not tell what she was doing or why. My thought based on what you guys did, and my own experience, I think the game in the box should come with a rule book. The price for this game is pretty high for a board game and I feel that they should have included a paper rulebook. I know there is a lot in the ap, however some folks do better with paper rules. Of course, that is not your fault, but is my 2 cents in any sort of review. thanks for the video, blaze

In the 2nd round, I think you went from 1 to 3 threat after the first roll. Meaning you could have kept going or perhaps stopped and kept your soldiers. I think it moved up when you rolled the dice and then realized you need to roll a 5th die. Unless there was some editing magic there and I missed a roll or something. I enjoy this game, but have not gotten the same group to the table to really give a timed go.

I have a doubt. When the 2nd round starts, after all the refreshing process, what happens to the budget? Does it refresh too, I mean, are u supposed to use the same amount you had back in the first round again? Cause before the 2nd round started they were given a new budget (12 coins in the video), but only after they'd already spent it (that is what I understood) then he got more from the emergence funds. Can someone help me understand this please?

To be clear...you don't have to put any research scientists on any particular research project just because there's a card down in that spot. You still should put the card down...and if you're short on funding...just don't put a microscope token on it.

  • @heccubus1

*****, True, we defer to Dave and Aaron who have played the game more than Nikki and I, in my experience an alpha player takes over the decisions for a co-op game. I made what I felt were many decisions that were mine alone (selecting that 2 damage to the base card in the first round, for instance, probably cost us the game) and in the timed portion of the game would be difficult for an alpha to control. I also said that during the resolution phase there was more discussion on the team's moves, which is appropriate for that phase.

Lincoln Damerst Aaron and (especially) Dave are always the alphas in this group, but I agree with Lincoln that they were less so in this episode, because people have moments to do their own thing. As Nikki says, she enjoyed her role because it gives the appearance of being able to tell people what to do, which she doesn't get to do often - in reality, she isn't telling them what to do, but it's a great role to play for the quietest member of the group. (By the way, referring to Aaron and Dave as alphas is not meant to be critical - the dynamics and differences of the main four of you are what makes this series my favourite board game show on KZread. Thanks for producing it!)

The lengthy rules and explanations almost make it not worth if you don't plan a lengthy session with maybe a couple or more games. Same can be said if you take the time to only play it once or twice ever. In practice while playing or even watching, it's very engaging. You just can't trip over everyone else, you specifically have to follow the person whose turn it is. Everyone has a certain role and that's what you focus on mostly. Overall it looks fun. You learn as you go and become more organized and level-headed with each end phase. Clearly not for casuals. Certainly difficult in the beginning, like most games should be.

(Classy) But definitely shows your true colors. Not everyone rushes around youtube 24/7 like you and watches and comments immediately as comments are being made! What's wrong with your brain? Yeah, I just got here 4 months later and commented, so what??? People comment on my videos years after I release them and I don't think anything is wrong with that because those people just happened to stumble upon my video 4 years later. No big deal, their comments are just as valid as anyone else's. Yours aren't even logic and the fact that you deleted my other comments says volumes of who you are. "I think you already proved who you are." So now you're holier than thou? I think you just proved who you are.
