XBOX 360 - Change thermal paste

Ойын-сауық

Knowing that Xbox 360 has heating problems, is good thing to change the paste after some time of use. Keeping console in better condition will extend the lifespan overall.
Here is a full cover video of disassembly to make it easier for you! :)

Nice. I used thermal grizzly kryonaut and temps are 45 on average compared to 60.

I realize it's been a year, but if you ever do this again, please, please for the love of God, consider using Isopropyl Alcohol, 91 or 99%. You do not want those smeared bits around the CPU from removal, and it gets out all the excess old compound on the heatsinks. The problem with the smeared bits is those little control chips for throughput around the processors? Yeah, if the solder joints get that compound in them, you could cause all sorts of errors and even fry your board. It's cleaner that way, especially if the q-tips are dunked in it and you let them dry just a little bit before, or only partially dunk them into alcohol. It's a superior experience, and 91, especially 99% will leave no residue (and dramatically reduce particles left over from the q-tips and the paper towels). Otherwise, nifty.

Thank you for taking the time to give your advise. I'm far from the ideał yet but I'm trying to impove my technique as time goes by. I'm using already isopropyl alcohol to any repaste I'm doing. That's a very good suggestion actually. Thanks for watching! :)

Just spent 2 and a half hours swapping parts and cleaning to restore my childhood console to find out I left Skyrim oblivion in my old disk drive that I swapped for a year newer model, turns out both won't read disks as well sadly, is there a way to open it without powering the drive up? Emergency eject button?

Unfortunately, you can't just swap drives from other consoles on XBOX 360 and make it work. Drive has a key that needs to match the key on motherboard. If the key is different will not play games, only movies. You can change the key to the new drive but needs to extract the key with Jungleflasher from the drive was in the console before and flash it to the new replacement drive. As far as how to take the disk out, there is no other way to take it out, no other buttons, you need to unscrew the drive and take out both cover sides, or plug into the power after you get into the console again and inject it.

Isopropyl alcohol 70%-80% takes the thermal paste off easier. Original thermal paste did not look that bad considering the age. Most the time it’s all the dust from the years causing over heating, same like FAT PS3. Cheers.

Well, welcome to xbox360 experience! This clips are always giving me hard time as well. The fact that you changed your paste is not giving you any guarantee of passing ok the e 74 error. That console especially the fat model older than Jasper was made to become faulty. They had not really any success with cooling on this console. If I were you, I would try once more with more tension on x-clamps. Thanks for watching.

E74 is when the GPU fails to communicate with the 10MB EDRAM indicating a faulty EDRAM chip.

I used gembird. Not the top but is doing the work fine. For even better results also suggest Kryonaut grizzly which is decent quality. I used on the PS4 video on the channel. Thanks for asking!

yw, also i got a question so my 360 doesnt have the x clamps holding the gpu and cpu, it has circles, my xbox 360 is rrod and i was wondering since i lost some do I need to buy some x clamps to fix it? @@ChristakisTech

  • @ChristakisTech

If you already have rrod, not much you can do to save your console. You can try though but not invest much on this. It's mostly a battle that you are loosing than winning. Clamps not much can help you fix it because the problem is more complicated than this. Is not a simple solder ball joint between board and chip but joint on silicon die in the chip itself. So nothing you can do in that case.

Not really worth the time and effort. If it overheats/breaks just buy another one. Theres a ton out there for cheap. Sometimes changing thermal paste causes more issues instead of preventing them. If you arent careful or arent familiar with circuit boards/mother boards you can do some seeious damage and theres no turning back. Just enjoy the system and games doing all this is useless and only really needed to be done on PC's
