Xband was awesome! The next time i'm at my moms I will log on. I was a nationwide player, and I would represent Super Mario Kart in my crews. We would beat out other crews and turn them into our crews. I met a lot of good people off Xband. I will never forget chatting with this girl every day before and after school. HAHA. We became good friends and still talk now and then.

I'm kinda jealous of people who grew up on this. If this did exploded back in 1994. We would've had playstation online and Nintendo 64 online, back in the later half of the 90s. Hell, ps2 and Xbox og would've had a bigger online multi-player presence.

Hey, I'm unsure if you reply to comments on this video anymore. I have a couple questions. 1. I have a sanni cart reader v3 that I use to dump snes cartridges as well as their save data. If I buy an xband modem and if the battery still works after all these years, could I just send or email you the save file? 2. Since this is for preservation purposes (I'm a preservationist too.), could this also work with emulators?

I don’t own an XBand modem (I wasn’t even born at the time it came out) but I do have a Snes and a Genesis, and this looks so awesome! WWG made a great documentary on the XBand and I hope one day it’ll be fully preserved and up and running again. Thank you for bringing this project back, I was wondering what happened to Retro.live. I can’t wait to see how much further this goes! I think it’d be kinda cool if the modem cartridge can be reverse engineered via FPGA. I don’t know, I’m not an engineer, but hey, anything is possible, a company did make an FPGA SEGA CD that basically put the entire add-on into a cartridge so that’s cool. Anyway, wishing best of luck to you and this project! Hope all the patches are preserved one day!

X-Band in my opinion is one of the most overlooked aspects of gaming history. Everyone loves to obsess over the SNES era, but it seems like so few had the pleasure of playing against people ONLINE. This whole scene was a subculture that has basically been forgotten. All the clans, leaderboards, message sending, cheaters, etc. My favorite memory was making it to the leadersboards on Super Street Fighter 2. Good times!

Im having the same issue with the alarm industry… many commercial fire alarm systems simply wont report over VOIP because its much more regulated than, say, a security system (even if it were possible and… like you said, I dont think DTMF is designed to work on IP) BUT, somehow someway, when I call X (CenturyLink, Comcast, whoever) and explain i need real copper at x building, most of the time, they get it done. (Especially if you got an apartment complex coming online, owner is moving in renters on X day, you gotta have fire Marshall bless the fire alarm system…. They make it happen) Point being, it sounds like you can run new PBX lines now a days - but I bet its not cheap… And I imagine, it might be harder to get it done than I realize Still, this is really cool - I wanted Xband when I was a kid, it never happened - im surprised its even possible!

Doubt it. It would read the everdrive's OS ROM and reject it without a custom patch(s).

SD2SNES works, we had two different people test it. On the Genesis side my Everdrive X7 appears to work, but not 100% sure if there are any problems

@@natarii This.. this is bonkers! Yeh I'm looking @ the X7 but the SD2SNES/FKPAK I acquired immediately when superfx became reality! Is Doom tested? (!)

@@mistamontiel00 Doom isn't working, but it's one that actually has some hope of being fixed, since DOOM/FX went open source. Someone compiled the game patch but it wasn't working

@@natarii Thanks, very cool stuff. I watched the documentaries yesterday. Too bad they dont have a way to add an xband add-on application to the SNES/SEGA mini systems. Most of my memories playing these games were with my friends, as most ppl. Do you know if the xband modem would work on the ATGames Sega Flashback Console? Do you know how big the player roster is?

@@jnc121978 It may work on a clone console, it depends. If it uses emulation it definitely will NOT work. Playerbase is really maybe 10 people, only one or two games a week happen, and they are very laggy. Gameplay on SNES/SFC only. I would say if you're looking to play games it's not worth getting a whole xband setup.

X band was good in it's day, but god please just let it die. If you want to play online SNES stuff just buy a damn Switch and play Mario Kart on that or somethin
