XANADU ( Movie Clip ) ♦ Whenever You're Away From Me ♦ Olivia Newton John & Gene Kelly (HD)
Музыка
"Whenever You're Away From Me"
(from "Xanadu" soundtrack)
No other face would take you off my mind
You're so refined
You're much too kind
I have to warn you I'm never gonna set you free
'Cause I was born to
Love you for eternity
Whenever you're away from me
Wherever you go
You're never far away from me
I want you to know
I only have to close my eyes dear
And suddenly I'm where you are
You better never stray
Cos I'll never be far away
On every breeze I seem to hear your name
My heart's aflame
I feel the same
I'd fall apart dear if you let the feelin' end
Don't break a heart dear that nobody else could mend
Whenever you're away from me
Wherever you go
You're never far away from me
I want you to know
I only have to close my eyes dear
And suddenly I'm where you are
You better never stray
Cos I'll never be far away

After refusing to dance in the movie, Gene danced twice and skated once. For this number, he insisted on doing all the choreography and it was filmed with one cameraman on a closed set. He also made sure Olivia Newton-John could cope with the dance steps. Once again, we see Gene making his partner look amazing. In the afterdub - where the taps are added in - he did all the tapping for it. He truly was one of the greatest on-film dancers and probably the best dance choreographer (Busby Berkly was a different sort of choreographer - his was more a precision marching and placement). Xanadu will always be special because it was the last time Gene 'Kelly danced on film.

Well, how about that . . I realised that the choreography was purposely straightforward as ONJ was not a dancer, but I didn't know that Gene Kelly had actually choreographed it himself. But yeah, that sounds just like the sort of thing he would have done - an amazing dancer and one of nature's true gentlemen.

Xanadu was Gene Kelly's swan song, he went out in the style his legendary status deserved. I don't care what others say, this was a massively underrated movie and it'll always be one of my favorites
The entire movie is worth it for these 4 1/2 minutes. and now today I have to say rest in peace to both Olivia and Gene.

That realization that he was nearly 70 and could still dance like that is mind boggling. What a talent.

Watching Olivia dance with Gene in this scene reminds me of Ginger Rodgers a little with Fred Alistair.
I’m sitting here watching this as it brings tears to my eyes, as my mom and uncle were both extras dancing and roller skating. We played this soundtrack on 8track in my grandparents Cadillac all the time it transports me back in time. I don’t think anyone will ever understand. Thanks

RIP Olivia. The world is a slightly worse place without you in it.
my favorite part of Xanadu rest in peace Gene and Olivia
One gets the sense that she was absolutely thrilled to be doing this number with him, and the behind-the-scenes knowledge of what he did to get the number where it needed to be is the cherry on top. They’re dancing in Xanadu now. 💗

Indeed!
It's nostalgic to watch the title character of Singin' in the Rain dream of the past and imaginatively dance with his long-ago love, who materializes before her finally dissolving in his arms, only the smile on Kelly's face remains. This moment takes on new symbolism after Olivia passes away. As the Muse Kira, the personification of the Greek goddess of dance, Olivia was wonderful in Xanadu.
Such a great song, performed beautifully by Gene Kelly and Olivia Newton John (R.I.P. 8-8-22)

This was on the B side of Xanadu. My aunt has this record. I played this song more than I did Xanadu.
This is one of those movies that got caught between decades. On one hand, the music and choreography were freaking amazing. On the other hand, the clothing styles, temporary fads and slang date it a good bit. The dancing is a mixed bag, with roller-disco being a heavy influence, but also included “Locking” (break dancing) and early 80’s pop moves. You can also see the “Punk” look making an early appearance, as well as some glam-rock. In other words, a lot of stuff we’d see on MTV a few years later. The soundtrack is just a pure joy to listen to. Where else will you find ELO and ONJ collaborating with such ease? It really is a movie that’s “Suspended in Time” and should be appreciated for what it attempted to bring to the screen.

The hate for Xanadu makes me sad. It's certainly flawed and I'm sure it isn't what the producers intended. But there are genuine high points. Not just this scene but Dancin' was a fantastic concept, too. This number stands up in Gene Kelly's career as a genuinely great number.
Gene Kelly was always such a handsome man and to watch him dance (swoon) 😭
Came here to watch this after hearing the news of the passing of the iconic OLIVIA NEWTON JOHN. 💔
Thanks for the music and the memories Olivia 😍
So sad that she passed. Already watched it 7 times today.. one of my favorite movie scenes ever!
Hopefully Olivia and Gene are sharing a dance tonight among the stars.
RIP Olivia. A fitting number to play on her passing.

I used to watch this imagining I was Gene Kelly singing/dancing with Olivia Olivia, I honestly love you
You can all talk about how underestimated and underrated this movie and music were, but to me, this scene is the absolute best song and dance scene in the movie! Timeless, classic, pure and simple. Nobody could dance like Gene and Olivia was a perfect partner here! I'm sure they are dancing in the clouds again now. R.I.P. Olivia.
I was watching this when we had a phonecall & told the sad news my skater friend Peter passed away. This song comforts me to this day. I was 16 he was 18. Im now 52 & remember him every year at easter time. ❤
im loving the song again. speaks eternal love and togetherness "you're never far away from me..." the melody is calming.
Such a beautiful song and amazing duo! R.I.P. Olivia Newton John
RIP Olivia. I hope your dancing with Gene up in heaven. 😇

Does anyone else agree with me this is such a strange surreal film and very dream like and perplexing too.
I can't dance to save my life, I am just terrible. I think that is why I appreciate great dancers so much, I know it's hard and they make it look effortless. I could sit in a chair and just watch Gene Kelly for hours. That man was such an incredible talent and from everything I have ever heard a true gentleman. RIP.

Loved this movie. Saw it in the theatre. It has everything OLJ, ELO, the Tubes and....Gene Kelly. I've been listening to it for years.
The dreamy sweetness of this number gives me shivers. Gene Kelly was in amazing shape, light on his feet, precise and graceful.
wowsers what. total power house performance! get better? then show me! what a queen 👑👑👑
I've heard Gene was a bit uncomfortable making this movie, but it's priceless when you think about it.

I am not bawling my guts out :'( Oh the talent. RIP... but I only have to close my eyes... or visit KZread, and you're never far away! ♥
I think this was one of his last performances. You can see it in his eyes, this is where he would live, if he could.

Side Note: I saw this movie in the theater when I was four years old, and I've loved the soundtrack ever since. Being mesmerized by Gene Kelly came a bit later. SO SMOOTH!!!
