I listened to the audio commentary on this film and they mentioned her. The cast just happened to find her last minute, I think she had been a singer on Broadway and managed to have a brief film career before retiring. I can't recall a name though... but that was her actual voice in the film!

Ms. Poison Exactly, you know. So, there is no “better” Audrey.

Whoever choreographed the rhythmic steps in this song is a genius. Not only is it the 'heartbeat' of Skid Row and how its denizens have fallen into its dismal rhythm, but you can hear Seymour and Audrey trying to break away from that rhythm. Even when Seymour shuffles in-step to try and walk with everyone else, he acknowledges aloud that, "Depression's just status quo," before breaking away again.

I love this song, not just musically, but the fact that different background singers get one quick line for themselves, it brings real characters into the song which is one of the ways this songs is so relatable. Incredible how a personality can reflect through in just a couple seconds! And especially the guy at 2:30; I sometimes watch this sequence over and over again just to listen to him! So beautiful…

The funny thing is that people live in their own skid rows. Skid Row doesn't have to be a place, but it can be a person's life too. Love this song and sequence so much.

It's your right to exercise your free will and express your personal opinions, but as Ethan was getting at, it's a pretty privileged view to say skid row can just be in the mind of people, which is actually true, but that's not what this song is about. If it were it would remove most of the weight and emotion, as many people out there have a skid row in the mind AND in real life. That's why it's such a heartbreaking and moving scene featuring people of all types stuck in a physical rut, not just a mental skid row.

Whoever the lady is thats singing the first verse is KILLING IT! She has a powerful voice! #Love the song and the movie..

Of all the "let's introduce the main characters and set the scene" opening numbers in musicals, this is the best.

This movie is so underrated. Not only does it have great songs but the music numbers are perfectly shot. The practical sets/ effects are realistic and grungy enough to buy into this world.

I know this is very late, but the three girls are like a Greek chorus. In early Greek musicals to help the audience understand, they started having a chorus to help explain the story. The reason they're so dressed so nicely when singing is because the Greeks had to distinguish them somehow from the actors.

Not just middle America. The struggle is real all over. The cost of living is ridiculous in other parts of the country, too. The vast majority of us are just trying to survive. The song is specifically about folks trying to survive in decaying urban areas, but the story and sentiment is universal.

I just realized the girls' names are all singular versions of the names of popular 60s girl groups.

The bit with the hobos at 3:49 is so great. As are many added details in the film version of this musical. It's a nice touch to point out that Seymour is not yet at rock bottom, but it's always just lurking around the corner. Without his job and room at Mushnik's, that could well be him.

Rick has such a good voice, not perfect but that's what made it suit Seymour so well. He just fits Seymour so beautifully that it's hard to associate the character with anyone else.

In my opinion, no other song in a musical has ever captured the emotion of living in poverty than this song. This hits viscerally.

Seymour's part always makes me cry. This is my favorite song in the movie. I just love the bridge where Seymour and Audrey sing together, their unmet desires syncing perfectly. The ending is quite uplifting to me, and I like to listen to this song when I'm down.

Decades later and this song still gives me goosebumps.

This has always been my absolute favorite song, by far, in this musical. You can totally hear the desperation, anger, and pain in nearly every character’s solo. Even the company expressed their disdain for having to live in the poverty stricken ghettos of NY. Especially when they all come together to harmonize “down on skid row!” Gah, it still gives me the good tinglies all over at that part. 😆

This is one of my three favorite song in this musical. Mean Green Mother from Outer Space and Somewhere That’s Green are the other two songs.

Am I the only one absolutely obsessed with Seymour's part on this song! You can just feel the heart and emotion coming from Rick Moranis' voice! And the bit when he walks into the alley just gives me chills every time!! The acting is incredible!!

I'm 40 years old here in 2020. I can't believe it's been 34 years since I first saw this movie. To me, this is the most underrated song of any musical. Then again, I'm just some bum on skid row. So what do I know?

This entire song gave me chills. It’s a musical masterpiece.

I like it when they have ensemble members singing this with the cast. I wish the ensemble would have more song time in the movie

God the memories.....The 80’s was truly a remarkable decade for cinema and as a child of the 80’s, there were a handful of movies I watched over and over again with “Little Shop of Horrors” being one of them .....”Ghostbusters,” “Star Wars The Empire Strikes Back,” the ‘89 “Batman,” “The Goonies,” “Indiana Jones and The Temple of Doom,”.........

I always wondered how Pam and Gina met.

They've been friends since childhood. They did a TV show that was cancelled when they were like twelve

I've been watching this a lot lately, and what I have learned to appreciate is that they keep doing these cool musical things where they all line up in the streets, and you think they're going to dance, and then, nope. This is skid row, people don't fucking dance.

Frank Oz directed the hell out of this movie. It’s truly perfect.

This song hits so hard for those of us that have grown up in poor shitty towns and neighborhoods. May we all get out of skid row one day. 🙏🏼

I liked my shitty town thank you very much! We were/still are poor but happy, thank you very much. Poverty doesn't always equal unhappiness.

This song still gives me chills to this day!! The music is phenomenal, the singing is spectacular, the story is touching, and the choreography is incredible!! ✨10/10✨

This musical MASTERPIECE is the REASON we were BLESSED with the Disney Renaissance

I love that Levi Stubbs (Audrey II) made a cameo in this song.

When the woman at the beginning of the song sort of growled when she sang “uptown” at 0:42, I felt that, man.

Nowadays you look at that one bit and think, "WE are the Walking Dead."

4:02 that musical subversion of doing a downside on the vocals instead of the normal rise on "show", because they're literally attempting to climb, but the music is swelling downwards. Genius.

How are even the background singers genuinely talented as hell ???

I absolutely love 1:56 to 2:04 for some reason it sounds so beautiful, and i love the male voices harmonizing with females' singing, it's very pretty. It feels like a song of its own

I think I was about 13 when I saw this movie and right from this opening song, I knew it would be one of my favorites forever. And it totally is. Still to this day.

Brady Kristoff that's how I felt when I saw this in the fourth grade. Going on 20 this year and it's still my favorite musical.

This scene made such an impression on me as a child in the '80s. I understood the skid row they were talking about. I was growing up in a tiny 2bd apartment in the Bronx with my parents and sister, and we were definitely poor. I saw poverty every time we went into the big city for a special visit. I remember just kind of feeling the pain of every character in that scene, that feeling of being stuck somewhere that feels bad, pretty much all the time.

One of the greatest musicals EVER!!
