X5 Air Bag Suspension Fix DIY - E53 Rescue

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The rear suspension on many E53 BMW X5s was a pneumatic air bag made of rubber that will degrade after so many years of being out in the elements, so they'll need to be swapped out for new parts. It's actually pretty easy. In this video I show you how to do it.

Special thank you to www.oembimmerparts.com for providing the parts for this build. Be sure to check them out if you're looking for air bags on your X5 or for any of your BMW part needs:

I have a 2001 E39 Touring with airbags in the rear. The process is basically the same for anyone watching, only major differences being the interior trim isn't the same, but that's not difficult to pull apart to gain access to the top of the bags. And instead of a clip, there is a nut or bolt (I forget) on the bottom of the bag holding it in. If you have an E39 and were looking for a guide to replace the rear bags, you could follow this and it would easily suffice. The way Jason removes the air piping and clips on top are identical.

That's the one thing I really dislike about BMW. It usually takes you longer to get to the part you need to replace than it does to actually replace the part.

Great work, easier than I would think (if you have spare clips for all those panels :)). BTW, I believe this was a factory option, "412 Retractable Load Floor".

"More difficult than it needed to be" seems to be the way with the e53. Lots of things just don't make sense. It also seems a little flimsier than the e39.

Been watching you work on 325 I changed my plugs and coils and my oil pan gaskets. When I got put together the car drove down the street. I then pressed the gas to get some acceleration. And then my car got sluggish the (cel) came on and no actual power.ive called bmw but no will call back Checked codes and keeps switching between cylinders but its usual cylinder 6 with misfire and fuel cut off. Any ideas

Anyone in the market for an E53 X5 after seeing this repair: "Wow what an easy thing to do! I gotta get myself one of those cars as well" Anyone who actually bought an E53 X5 some short time later: "Wow what a stupid idea to buy one....and where's my money at?" :D BTW if you seriously consider buying this model and you have a E46 you'll be getting a new and positive feel. Not better not worse but you'll be happy. But if you have a E39 you might be disappointed as the E39 is the model that performs better (steering response, comfort, accelleration, trunkspace, maintenance cost, fuel economy, insurance etc...). If you can try to borrow a E53 first before you make a decission. The cars are great but you gotta know why you want one. Especially with 19" rims and the sport packet. You'll know about every indentation on the road :)
