    Thanks for reviewing this, great job, I've been interested in this model for a while now, I watched both your videos on this and it wasn't bad on the slope but as soon as I heard it take off I made my mind up, I use my electric models in areas where noise would be an issue so it's definitely a design flaw to add extra weight and components to the drive-train in my opinion, otherwise a nice change of design.

    The noise detracts from a really nice motor glider, well built.

    Great video. Man, the vibes from that prop mechanism must be quite intense. I've not looked in a while but is Ian Davidson offering the STL files for his boom prop mechanism? There was another xuav one owner here on YT that was able to replace with Ian's and the results were much improved.

    its a sweet looking plane and an interesting motor/prop setup but your right...that noise is obnoxious. I hope you can get it sorted.

    The ugly noise is because of the straight gears, its should have slanted gears or either be belt driven.

    Maybe the noise can be reduced with a solid, balanced prop. Folding props could introduce a lot of places for imbalance (like in the folding mechanism)

  • @AndrewNewton

    To some extent yes, but most of the noise comes from the gear teeth.

  • @RagTheNutsOff

    Howdy Andrew, as you & others have mentioned in the comments below the noise isn't ideal, if there was half as much noise would you leave it how it is or still pursue the front mounted motor/prop? PS the idea of twin motors sounded fun ;-)

  • @AndrewNewton

    @AndrewNewton

    That is a good question Matt. The noise is a big factor for me, I'm attracted to smooth and quiet flight. It's also the added nose weight needed to balance the motor aft of the CG, and the folding prop that takes a bite out of the wing when it starts spinning.

    Great video ! Sounds like a 2-stroke motor ? Is the prop unbalanced or is it the gearbox causing the noise?

    Your presentation and video is excellent. I have watched your setup, maiden without motor, and flight with motor videos. Do you have any alterations in your component choices after your experience? Would you buy this plane yourself, now that you know it? Jim

    Thanks James. I didn't like it in it's original form with the boom prop and the nose gimbal, but as a slope soarer it excels. See my later X UAV One sloping videos. I would definitely buy a kit version for that purpose.

    Andrew I have a question , what servos do you use on your planes ?

  • @AndrewNewton

    @AndrewNewton

    7 жыл бұрын

    Good question. On all scratch builds and slopers I use TGY 9018 metal gear micros from Hobby King. If any of the review planes have stripped servos that's what I replace them with too. On the DLGs I use Dymond D47 for rudder and ele and KST DS245H (for when the cheapo PNP aileron servos die)

    Well the airframe seems sound enough. Good enough in fact to warrant some experimentation....motor on the nose sounds like a good idea. What was the outcome with the CG? Did you have to adjust from the manual?

    Right off the bat, I don't like the idea of adding additional gears to turn that weird prop. For one, it's extra weight. Secondly, wouldn't metal-on-metal contact cause unnecessary vibrations that'll affect FPV? Thirdly, how on earth do you properly balance those folding props? It looks innovative... but if it doesn't address a design problem or improve performance, I think it's over-engineered for nothing.

    Hello Andrew, Is it swooping season? :-) I didn't like the look of that prop arrangement the first time I saw it, and I like it even less now I've heard it. I thought we'd got past geared motors. Anything that adds complexity and makes it more difficult to replace a prop can't be good, and anything that makes that much noise has got to have inefficiencies. I agree, either try a front mounted motor, or, if it were mine, I'd try twin wing mounted motors

  • @AndrewNewton

    @AndrewNewton

    8 жыл бұрын

    Yes it's definitely swooping season, and this one is here every year. It's a standard folding prop setup apart from the gearing. I'll try a motor on the nose next.

    I'd also recommend twin wing mounted motors, in my experience it adds more stability to the model. My old man's Radian Pro also has a tendency to piss off the local Maggie population :D

    LoL! I don't think a woolly glove is going to save anyone's fingers from a serious prop injury! And that noise is likely due to imbalance. I still like the idea of the prop around the tail boom as it virtually eliminates the need for a thrust angle. But clearly the relative cheapness of the model means that a fancy piece of engineering like that prop drive will suffer from quality issues. Andrew, could you please do a strip down video? . . Yes, I know it's winter down under now, but I didn't mean take your shirt off!! :¬/

    Ah, yes. Forgot what was shown. Hmm, not enough info to give an opinion though. I'd like to see the rest of that drive's components too. It definitely sounds like you have prop vibes and if that casing is slack on the prop drive or whatever bearings are being used are a poor fit . . . So many chances for it to be eccentric that it could almost be English! :¬)

    Looked at the build clip again...lol...An aluminium motor gear pinion on perhaps a grp main gear...?....Jeez, these chinese "designers"....dont they know anything..? As an engineer, this is just not going to last long at all..!!!!....I suspect you are going to find aluminium in the gearbox, especially as you didnt grease it as I suggested....Hardened steel gears involute meshing at least is what is needed and the gear centres need to be controlled.....Its a nice idea, let down by cheapo engineering "design"...Shame really....flies ok though.
