Well done Dominic! Can you please explain to me what the sentence in the manual "Toe Brakes will not work with the Spitfire - you must bind the custom wheel brake command (FlyingIron /Wheel Brakes) to realistically use the aircrafts lever operated differential braking systems" means in practise? You have clearly solved the problem of the difficult ground handling.

Thankyou, yes what they are saying in the manual is to assign a control device to the custom wheel brake which is the lever , to be honest I didnt quite understand myself so i have assigned the Toe Brakes to the differential braking and adjusted the response curve so making them not overly sensitive, you will see the hydraulic gauge needle in the cockpit move up and down so at half press on the Toe brake i have got the pressure indicator only rising slightly , so i have dampened the response down a little, even set up like this it took me about a week before i could master landings and i still have the odd ground loop. On take off just make sure she is trimmed correctly as you want the tail to start flying asap (getting the tail wheel off the ground) , upon landing full flaps down at around 100 knots i literally fly the Spitfire onto the runway and try keep the tale flying for as long as possible using toe brakes and rudder and balancing the plane on the elevator , once shes down to about 50-60 knots the tail should be coming down , then its just an art keeping her straight, Its one of the most hardest planes to master in my opinion but once you have a couple of successful landings its a real sense of satisfaction :) , keep trying ! you will get it.

Dominic Phillips Thanks Dominic, I will follow your advice. Btw, in the meantime I took the default Stinson and that's a handfull as well, although she's a bit friendlier then the Spit!

jeanco lapierre armande lol I have tried that plane when I first moved over to XPlane and like you say it is a handful ! The Spitfire is a definite bitch on the ground but such s beauty ! :)

Dominic Phillips The Stinson's tailwheel only behaves on the ground with the yoke tightly in your belly. But for the Spit in X-plane that isn't enough I fear, because of the complicated way the wheelbrakes are working. Btw, I have in my bookshelf R.R.S. (Bob) Tuck's famous book "Fly for your life". In this book he describes in some detail his first experiences with the Spit - that was Christmas 1938- but he never mentions any problems while taxiing, taking off or landing...On the contrary, the only problem he describes comes when the tail gets off the ground: you are left with only a few inches between the prop tips and the ground!

jeanco lapierre armande wow sounds interesting ! That must be a lovely interesting read , I will check it out , it’s funny cause I always think once the tail starts flying she will nose over or the props will touch the ground , it’s definitely a skill to master the Spitfire but a very enjoying experience :)

I hope the audio for the MSFS release is much better than this. Sounds super-clipped. Just a bunch of audio distortion.
