singaporean cantonese here. you are right. our cantonese is passed down from our parents whose cantonese is more relevant to their times, or mixed with Malay etc

hey hey hey! i love all that u shared! i am a Singaporean, I speak Chinese, English and others (a bit here and there). Cantonese also can understand and speak little. thanks to ur Hong kong show. My mum loves Hong kong dramas, so we also know to pick up from there since young:) Everything u said, especially you said u learn to see things from many angles now, I like you honest views and thoughts. Great! well said! We were taught to respect different races from our parents and from schools since young. It was more than a fight that the government implemented the no alcohol after 10.30pm. It was quite a serious issue it shouldn't had happened at all . 😟😟😟

You not the only HKr in Singapore. There was 1st batch of HKr migrated to Singapore after 1997. This group already rooted and you really cant see any difference from the local.

Hi, like your blog, always very humorous especially about the lightning incident in Singapore. It’s true that most Singaporean Chinese are not able to communicate well in Chineses as our fore fathers already settled in S E Asia since the last century, English speaking been the official communication tools in our multi racial society. Glad that your husband’s family is able to communicate with you in Cantonese as not all Singaporean Chinese can speak the dialect. Hope that you can blend into our culture eventually.

btw, the alcohol banning thing is not one person creating trouble when drunk. Its group of people being drunk resulting in death, vehicles burnt and mass riots in little India. Its a very serious thing.

Very frank. It's never easy to uproot and stay in another country. Lack of initial understanding of culture and filled with doubt. Overall, I think Sg being a young and modern country, it is not difficult to gradually live comfortably here, especially you have a family to support you along. By the way, there are lots of people here who can understand 广东话 Cantonese, even if they are from other dialects. Just speak to them and you will realise you are not in a strange land. They are mostly friendly and understanding.

Many foreigners do not have a full picture on a few things and misperceptions. 1) many think that u are not allowed to eat chewing gum. U be fined! This is definitely not correct. U can eat and even buy chewing gum now. But as a law abiding citizen who loves cleanliness for your home, u will not litter your gum anywhere. Therefore, as long as you do kot spit anywhere, everyone is allowed to chew your gum!! 2) there is no liquor to be sold at the convenience store..after 1030pm. It is strict . But why? It was Singapore has passed a law that bans the buying and selling of alcohol, including the drinking of alcohol in public places, from 10:30 p.m. until 7 a.m. The Liquor Control (Supply and Consumption) Bill, which was approved by the Parliament on January 30, 2015, will take effect in April.Feb 17, 2015. It is the anti-social behavior that the Bill is seeking to curb. The measure was introduced in response to the “Little India” riot on December 2013 that involved foreign residents and the police. The government said that alcohol use was a contributory factor that led to the riot. Therefore, it to protect and provide a safe place for the mass people.

@@ErosinLionCity there are still people who can speak Cantonese because they are cantonese. Although here the dominant dialect is hokkien or teaches followed by Cantonese. Cantonese seem to be more dominant in Malaysia especially KL or ipoh.

Your mellifluous Cantonese is different from Singaporeans. In Singapore, dialects are associated with vulgarities. There are some Chinese Singaporeans who came during the Ming dynasty or earlier. They are called the Nonya/Baba and their language, custom and manner are of the Malay, not Chinese. Just as Chinese migrated to the US and their orientation is America, so is these earlier Chinese migrated to Singapore. They are Chinese but can't speak Chinese. There are some China Chinese can't understand why Chinese can't speak Chinese. Please understand this.
