X-Men ‘97 Is Great, Until It Isn’t

Ойын-сауық

X-Men ‘97 Is The Best Piece of X-Men media we’ve gotten in a while, but after some retrospect, I wouldn’t say EVER. When you really look at a show from a greater overview, you see a lot great with X-Men ‘97, but you also see many, many issues. So many great characters exist in the form of Cyclops, Jubilee, Morph, Wolverine, Storm and more.
But there’s also many characters that in my opinion were absolutely ruined, such as Gambit, Jean Grey, Rogue and others. Many plot lines are also great and the complexity that they developed through the episodes, but then there are other storylines which destroy so much character value and impact of the show. That’s why I still don’t think X-Men ‘97 is PEAK X-Men as everyone is saying, because I feel like we really have to take a closer look beyond just the hype and that’s when the flaws start to show, which is of course, what I go over. Though, as always, thank you to all who have clicked on this video, and even more so to YOU reading this description.

I'm glad there are some people brave enough to point out the flaws of the show and it has to do with the way characters are written and rushing through so many great storylines. Rogue was definitely miswritten. They took away the integrity of the character, and that's just bad writing, and although I love Magneto as a villain and the occasional reluctant ally, the way he joined X-Men was all wrong. He never would have forced his way in as they made him do in this show, and his relationship with Rogue was rather creepy. They never stated how old she was when they had this relationship which made him look like a possible pedophile. Plus, there was no hint of this in the original show. Please keep with the continuity. Another thing that didn't make sense is the disconnect Rogue had with the rest of the team. The whole sisterhood thing between Jean and Storm was good, but why was Rogue left out of that. All three women were close and Jubilee was like the little sister and she also had very little scenes with the other women. I hope next season is written better, because this season was a bit of a mess. I'm hoping they just concentrate on the Apocalypse storyline and give resolution to that before moving on to something else. I didn't like how they created these horrific situations and then almost immediately dropped them. Don't show us something horrible and then pretend like it didn't happen. A few lines of dialog could have cleared a lot of that up. I only give it an 80%

Yeah, frankly I completely agree. So many important storylines were just added to create this constant stream of hype even though they deserved more time to develop and hit hard, and the entire series was a mess, and the clear hate the writers had for some characters like Gambit and disingenuous writing for characters like Rogue was absurd. The continuity flaws were insane too, and ultimately I feel that generally while most of the people on board who wrote the show did care for the characters and the X-Men in general, I think they just didn’t know much of what they were doing with the storylines and writing, and that balance of having a good level of knowledge and respect for these characters *along* with having a good execution of that through the writing, honesty and integrity to characters, and compelling dedication to plot lines is what was missing.

Exactly, they rushed the show too fast to allow any of the consequences of major events to be felt. If this was the original show, they would have shown the X-Men struggling to deal with Magneto as their new leader as Cyclops, Wolverine, and Gambit would all have huge problems with it. We would have seen Storm deal with the difficulties of not having her powers around the X-Men, ultimately forcing her to leave for feeling useless there. I mean, she didn't even give Beast a chance to see if he could try and cure her. Ultimately, they went away from the drama of the original and turned the show into a glorified action show. Toning down all the characters in order not to offend and pander to the fans. Cyclops was way too nice in this show, instead of the no-nonsense leader, he was in the original. Tolerated way too much of everyone's bullsh*t in this show because they wanted to make him likable as possible. They took the easy way out and took away all the hard decisions Cyclops usually has to make as leader of the X-men. Wolverine was also toned down, taking away a lot of the edginess that made him so great in the original. The same with Gambit and Rogue who were huge flirts in the original. Lastly they turned Morph into a creep. They basically neutered everyone with a huge personality, except Beast. They missed the whole point of the appeal of the X-men, which is all these different and dynamic personalities coming together and trying to get things done as a team. They substituted deep characterization and storytelling for hotshot writing like cliffhangers after every episode, nonsensical flashy action scenes, tons of easter egg references, and nostalgia bait thrown everywhere. A typical Disney vehicle.

To each their own. IMO, X-Men '97 isn't just perfect, it's godlike... there's no way in hell you'll convince me that it's a bad show.

Everyone's entitled to their opinion just so happens yours is wrong. Anyone who understands basic writing can see the huge flaws in this show. Perhaps when the nostalgia wears off, you'll be a le to look at the show a lot more objectively

Agreed! As someone who watched the original show, this was such a breath of fresh air. Sure, some plot points were rushed -but that was due to the short episode order, but anyone with a brain could understand that. Never mind the bitter person roaming the comment section

@ML-yn9yu 🤦‍♂️short episode order? The original only had 13 episodes in its 1st season(not to mention much less time to tell their stories within each episode). Only 3 episodes more than this reboot with only 20 minutes to tell a story while 97 got 30 minutes with a 40-minute finale. Anyone with a brain can see you dont know what the h*ll you're talking about.

@ML-yn9yu 🤦‍♂️ Learn what bitter means. So far, it seems to be the ones who find this show amazing are the ones with low intellect.

Let's be real. This show was never great. All the issues were apparent from the very 1st episode if you weren't blinded by nostalgia.

Yeah, I feel like most casual fans initially expected the show to be mid, whereas long time X-fans were expecting it to be top tier. But as time went on, it’s like more and more of the casual fan base started to like it more and more because they couldn’t perceive the flaws, whereas people who’ve been watching the X-men for years realized just how disingenuous so much of it was as the episodes went on.

@ProgrammedBoredom Yeah I think you hit right on the nail with that take. In terms of animation, though, it seems to be split. Some people think it's good while others don't think it's up to par. I'm in the later group. The animation seems to be poor for modern times, especially when you compare it to a show that came out around the same time in Ark which is a crappy show but beautifully animated. The original series was one of the most detailed animated action shows in 92, with only Batman being superior
