thank you x files for giving me two characters who are wonderfully three dimensional and don't exactly fit into one archetype and can have intelligent conversation with one another

The way he looks at her...after she gives that super-correct analysis of him and his life - and is completely silent for a few moments up until he makes that flippant comment (and it was totally flippant)...you could literally see him getting the chills the way how clearly she saw through him. It seems doubtful, at least to me, that anyone had ever said as profound a thing about him as she did...or at least not have it come from a place of malice or negativity. She's not being critical - just analytical and honest. She gave him the truth, honestly and forthrightly, and for Mulder (even if it was a truth about himself that he didn't much like), you could tell how shaken he was about both the revelation she brought forth, the feelings she evoked in him about said revelation, and how candidly she told it without holding it against him.

Very well said. Certainly one of the top moments in the shows entire run. This is easily one of the greatest episodes of all time and this moment plays a huge part in that.

Wow I didn't think it was possible to love two fictional characters this much. Was rewatching this ep recently and could not stop grinning like an idiot the entire time haha, I live for them

I love the philosophical conversations they have. The ones in War of the Coprophages are the best - they sum up not only their personal viewpoints, but the respect they have for each other. This is what makes their relationship unmatched.

Me too. They are complex, multidimensionnal characters. They feel very real. The X-Files is the only thing I read fanfiction about because they're really great chatacter that I love.

Me too. I love them more than a lot of people in real life. They have flaws like everyone else, fixations (like sunflower seeds for Mulder), little things that make them real. At the same time they are a bit unreal, I mean that they are so perfect and in tune together, almost in a fairytale way.

They are real. After someone creates a character and a story, that character becomes reality within that story's frame the same way we are real in our world in our story.

Scenes like this are why this show was great. It was more than just an horror scifi. The characters actually had depth and dialogues were interesting.

Every single conversation these two have had, are always so deeply profound.

Pretty deep conversation, every thing bounced off him like her smart criticism. I like Mulder s attitude. He deflects very well.

Opposing ideologies but witty sharp banter with an undercurrent of sexual tension. They bounced off each other and found it stimulating. They challenged and fascinated each other with a bond built on trust, respect, admiration and love.

scully has some daddy issues: dad->ahab->mulder "Scully, are you coming on to me?" XD

Quagmire is one of the best xfiles episodes, this scene helps make it that.

Leave it Darin Morgan to write a fantastic and funny episode with some of the smartest and most character-driven dialogue.

Mulder: "Why'd you name your dog 'Queequg'?" Scully: "It was the name of the Harpoonist in 'Moby Dick'. My father used to read to me from 'Moby Dick' when I was a little girl. I called him 'Ahab' and he'd call me 'Starbuck', so I named my dog 'Queeqeg'. It's funny I just realized something." Mulder: "That's a bizarre name for a dog, huh?" HA! This is 1 of my many MANY favorite scenes b/w these two! Absolutely classic. Mulder w/ his straight-faced, blatant, sarcastic-laced 1-liners. Love it ;)

A better question is why wasn't she more upset about the dog's death? I remember my best friend and I watching this scene, and we were like what?? How would you not be wailing.

I would put this scene/writing against any dialog in tv today and it will stand among the best of them.

Is it just me or Scully looks just as Rose from Titanic in that thumbnail photo?!?

When Scully says Mulder is Ahab here, she means he's like Ahab from Moby Dick rather than like her father. That said, they do say that women marry their fathers. From her past relationships, it would seem that what Scully looks for most in a man is the same sense of security she got from her father. Mulder's not the most stable guy, but he's mighty protective of her, even if he is the very reason she's in danger so much of the time. As she puts it in Season 9, he's her perfect other - her protector and endangeror.

To be fair to Mulder though. Many times he has tried to let her go. He even laments on this in the church in S11. Part of reconciling this need/love for her early on was examining his guilt complex in regards to her. But saying he puts her in the dangerous situations is i feel simply wrong. Because it takes away Scully's agency as a character and within her bond with Mulder. The fundamental thing we are missing here is that Ms Scully CHOOSES the danger. No one forces Scully to follow Mulder. She chooses it and knows the consequences. She herself says this to Mulder. She doesn't blame him for any of it. She chooses the unconventional life. She chooses Mulder. But what is very much true is that Mulder doesn't see it this way. He very much does blame himself and it nearly kills him many times. In fact he's at rock bottom in Redux with a gun in his hand. The implication here is that he is suicidal and if not from him discovering the wire tap. He was contemplating taking his life "they gave me this cancer to make you believe" over this guilt and self loathing. In fact Mulder loses his fundamental faith here and doesn't regain it until later on in 'the red and black' There is only one time i see Mulder pulling Scully back in to this world and it's in the 1st movie when he thinks she's leaving him and chases after her to pour his heart out. At the end it's Scully who takes his hand and chooses this life. It's Mulder who refuses Scully in 'firewalker' and Scully who again chooses this life. After Scully's abduction Mulder becomes even more protective over her and it's Scully that fights him over it. Scully makes the choice later on to leave that world and in the 2nd movie Mulder goes with her but falls into a deep depression and loses himself and his identity. Scully does leave but then again chooses to go back to that world in S10/S11. The implication in the dichotomy of Scully and Mulder's decisions is fascinating. As Mulder said in the movie "but you saved me, as frustrating as it is sometimes your god damn strict rationism and science has saved me a thousand times over. I owe you everything Scully and you owe me nothing" it annoys him but yet stimulates him and fascinates him. And Scully knows the consequences and the darkness that lies there. How that world and mulder can consume her but she likes the danger and it and Mulder makes her feel alive and stimulates her. Hell Scully says this in S10 that the x-files is a rush unlike any other. Blinding and intense. And then says "yeah, this is how i like my Mulder" when Mulder is at his peak manic ranting about the weremonster. His passion, excitement, drive and intensity is back. Everything that she herself admits to Mulder is why she fell for him "this stubborness, this drive is why i fell in love with you" and that dichotomy again. It can scare her and have awful repercussions but like Mulder it entices and stimulates her. And i love that the show explores this side of Scully at times. The struggle between the wild and logical. "Let's go waste some money" in requiem to mulder. Liking that he 'reduced' the auditors vision. 😄 so even though Scully called Mulder both her protector and endangerer in S9. In my eyes she chooses to be endangered and it is very much a conscious choice. And part of her likes it. And it's because it's Mulder that's doing it. The chaotic, reckless handsome anarchist that is trying to bring down the very institution that he works for. That will kill and die for her, that will go all the way to Antartica to rescue her from viscious aliens in a huge ass spaceship, that will break in to the pentagon to find a cure for her cancer, that will hang off an aerial tram trying to rescue her. I could go on. But basically if it wasn't Mulder Scully would have left that world and never looked back. She chose to keep going there because she loved him. And in that sense her loving him allowed him to endanger her.

@@rochey1010 I mean, Scully herself says he's her endangeror. Yes, she's a willing participant most of the time, but it doesn't change the fact that she often is in danger as a result of her association with him. I agree with everything you said about the dichotomy.

Watching her character grow from a rigid, naive, scientist needing empirical data to a scientist who sees and experiences shit science simply cannot explain is awesome.

Scully's face at 2:46 is priceless.

Mulder’s weight comment- I thought it was foreshadowing Scully’s cancer. I saw this for the first time already knowing about the cancer and I was like omfg they did not just do that. But it was also pretty funny because Mulder openly admitted to checking her out enough to notice and she glared at him because she finally caught on lol

They were joking about cannibalism before. Mulder's quip was about Scully not being much of a meal if it came down to it. 😄 but he is observant and very much pays attention to her "lately f you've been having this little 2oz pot of bee palm that you stir into your yoghurt, i dunno because you're on some kind of bee palm kick i guess, even though i tell you you're a scientist and should know better" 😆

I love this scene

What's hilarious is that they think they're stranded but actually in shallow waters. Mulder's sarcasm is gold. I'd totally fall for that wit, and Scully definitely has some complexes. She tends to fall for men that are authoritative, and she's attracted to their power. She's had relationships with her professor, and Mulder is technically her superior, and she likes his passion and drive. Not so much an Electra complex as Scully being a daddy's girl and trying to find that security in other men. That's actually quite normal for girls to want men that have father like traits. @@akshaynatu1084 i don't mean that he's better than her. I mean that Mulder represents the things that entice or draw Scully into those kinds of relationships. And look it's not a theory but fact that the show spells out several times in regards to Scully and relationships with men. We know Scully has been with her ex partner who was older than her (S1) we know that she had an affair with her instructor at the academy (all things) Scully analyses herself throughout the show, and we know that she is attracted to authoritative and driven men. Hell this scene even spells it out. Scully herself spells out why she fell for Mulder in the 2nd movie. And again it's basically Scully has a type. In 'all things' there's a choice and contrast with Mulder and her old flame in the hospital. That episode is where Scully chooses Mulder and it's where they consumate their relationship. Mulder is her superior in the sense that she was assigned to him in the pilot by Blevins in his words "to assist him" and Scully is out of quantico and green compared to Mulder. Mulder by this point has been in the bureau for a number of years. Was the FBI's golden boy until he turned his back to choose the X-files. By this point he was a genius profiler who worked in violent crimes and caught serial killers. He was so infamous that his reputation, both good and bad was passed around the academy. Scully knew him by reputation even when studying at the academy. He is far more experienced than her and older too. He is exactly the type Scully is attracted to. He's masculine, authoritative, stubborn, driven, reckless, older and when you watch the show you see that he does mentor her for quite some time in regards to the x-files. He does drive the cases and make the decisions. And there's even an episode that adresses this. 'Never again' with Scully's "why don't i have a desk?" And her feeling stifled and rebelling against Mulder. The point is that Scully feels controlled and dominated so she acts out. She recognises this pattern in herself too. She rebelled against her father by joining the FBI. She smoked secretly as a teenager, she had an affair with her married instructor etc. At times Scully's character is explored using patriarchal themes. The show aired during a time when there were very few women in the FBI, women on TV were eye candy and damsels, and it was a male driven world. Within the show Scully is in a male driven world, a boy's club where she strives to be accepted in that world and be a woman too. She tells her therapist this, and with regards to Mulder how she doesn't want him to feel that he has to protect her, that she's a damsel. It's both about Scully's pride in that FBI male driven world and Scully as a woman. So when she cries in Mulder's arms in 'irresistable' that's a very important moment for her and their relationship. Mulder doesn't wanna protect her and comfort her because she's a little woman. It's because he loves her, respects and admires her, and wants to keep her safe. Scully gets it and opens herself to mulder. The trust deepens between them. But we hear from padget in 'milagro' another examination of Scully's character, that she seeks and strives for Mulder's attention. That she likes and is attracted to the more authoritative side of Mulder. The passion, danger and intensity that only Mulder brings. Padget realises Scully can't love him because she's already in love with Mulder. And as Scully herself says later, it's more than just his love, tenderness and devotion. All the things that would have a woman fall for a man. But it's spelling out Scully's wild side too. She is attracted to Mulder's flaws too. The dangerous, stubborn, driven side. The side that says "F authority i do what i want" and the show examines this dichotomy within Scully many times. The good/bad girl. The rational side that knows that her instructor is married but has an affair, that knows she's hurting her father but joins a dangerous profession anyway, that knows to love and be loved by Mulder is for that love to be unconventional and all consuming. At times she rebels against this side of her but gets enticed and seduced because part of her likes it. In 'never again' she knows ED Jerse is bad news but she's rebelling against Mulder and the consumption/control she recognises is there with them. So in a way she's teaching Mulder a lesson that's she's not his obedient little Scully that just waits for him and does what he tells her. There is a sexual element here too "why because you're the big macho man?" She wants to feel and be desired for more than her brain. Hence the tattoo and the implied one night stand with Jerse. It's also no secret that this episode is happening in the period that she discovers her cancer. Scully is having a life crisis and it's about the men in her life. In "all things" we examine scully as a desired woman again. This time Daniel is back and he's offering her to get out of the damn car and settle. The chance for the boring stable, marriage, kids, retirement etc. For so long Scully has been telling herself that her future should be this. The conventions of society. But she chooses the unconventional. She realises she doesn't want or need this anymore. And it's why she ends up sleeping with Mulder. He's chaotic, reckless, but he stimulates her and makes her feel alive. It's never going to be a 9-5 , white picket fence with him. To love him, to truly love him is to take his hand and run with him. (And i suspect is why she leaves him later on after the 2nd movie. Because the dark depression he finds himself in strips him of everything that makes him Mulder, and he becomes alien and unreachable until he finds his purpose again in S10/S11) But yeah, long story short. Scully does have a type. And Mulder's reputation aside. He is very much her type. And again speaks to the psychology of girls trying to find their father in other men. That feeling of the father being the 1st male role model in the little girl's world, with the qualities later on the adult woman tries to replicate in her husband/boyfriend to find that safety/security her father brought. Not so much an electra complex but a deep bond the daughter and father have. Basically Scully is a 'daddy's girl' which we see that she was. Again Mulder having that authority over Scully doesn't take anything away from her. She's kickass and saves him just as much. But in regards to the darker/wilder side of a person? Sometimes you want to touch the flame even though it burns. And many times we examine this nature in Scully.

What do you mean "tends to fall for men that are authoritative, and she's attracted to their power." So basically *any* woman then, you may as well have just said "strong men" but that's not accurate, at least not in my IMO, she's barely had a relationship if any, throughout the show. You overestimate this greatly, Mulder isn't what you call a powerful man, he's kind of a dork, but is also charming, she's fascinated by him but her respect for him stems from his diligence and tenacity. You mention he was the golden boy before being moved to the X-files. I noticed this too lol, and I've said this before but I'll call it now. Mulder is the original Officer Angel (Hot Fuzz).

@@akshaynatu1084 Actually, if you check the script, she was assigned to, 'assist,' him. That means to help him. She was his assistant. He was head of the X-Files department. Whether he gave her orders or not is irrelevant.

It's a good scene....but I consider this the best worse episode...I feel like they mailed in the performance and the plot is a cheap mirror of Jaws ...with the cop that doesn't want to shut down the lake , the photo that Mulder insists is a tooth, the boat on the lake at night on and on ....but , like many other x files episodes, it has that perfect cozy campy vibe. Almost borderline silly . Jersey Devil was another one. With that , it's one of my favorites . On an x files binge again...
