This is the most weirdly romantic scene ever, written and acted beautifully. "There was one thing that remained the same. You... were my friend, and you told me the truth. Even when the world was falling apart, you were my constant... my touchstone." I almost want those as wedding vows.

I’ve seen those lines referred to as “Mulder and Scully’s wedding vows” by fans. I’ve also seen it argued that this scene marks the moment that Mulder and Scully are truly together (regardless of when they get together physically). It’s a sign that there will be no more Dianas in the picture anymore. It’s just him and her now, forever.

I have seen many films and TV shows, that sort of thing formed a huge part of my life for a very long time....I loved films etc from around the world, from the silent era, from Europe, old classics and modern classics and many more forgotten films inbetween. Bogart/Bacall, Hepburn and Tracy....so many....but David and Gillian were absolutely unique...those of us who followed the exploits of Mulder & Scully were truly lucky to have had them added to our lives.

I love how Mulder is addressing what Scully first said. “I don’t know who I can trust anymore”. He basically says. “I understand, I felt like that before but I have you” and he’s softly showing her that she doesn’t need to feel that way because he will be her constant too. And she acknowledges it by saying “and you are mine” …..my heart breaks in a thousand pieces ❤❤

Yeah but what's interesting is that every time there's a kiss Mulder instigates always but Scully definitely is receptive to it. That tells me that it's Scully who is the more hesitant of the 2, and Mulder tends to go with the moment. Check this out: Fight the future - Mulder instigates and leans in to kiss her. Millennium - Mulder stares at Scully and again instigates leaning down to her. Existence - Mulder again instigates and kisses her with William between them. Triangle - Mulder pulls 1939 Scully into him and plants one on her. The truth - Mulder walks over and takes Scully's face in his hands and again instigates the kiss. I want to believe - It's scully this time, nah only joking. Still Mulder. He again leans in and kisses her before she leaves for the hospital. Every single kiss is mulder but Scully has no qualms about aiming for his forehead. Can she not find his lips LOL

@@rochey1010 so true, but I always thought she was so hesitant because she loved him the longest. You can tell she's crushing on him in season 1 while it seemed that he started thinking of her more than a partner in late season 2 early 3. She saw him with multiple women in this time. The big thing is that Scully has had everything she loved or wanted taken from her. She almost loses her career, her life, and her freedom because of her involvement in the X-File cases. Even though she was assigned to him originally she ended up choosing him. Through her scepticism she believed him, and more importantly believed in him. She knew her feelings early on, and I think she would have been more direct with him if things hadn't gone downhill so fast. Scully lost her sister, her daughter, her family's trust, the ability to have children, and almost her life because of her involvement with Mulder. Also by that point she realized the depth of Mulder's self destructive tendencies. She saved Mulder and vice versa more times than either of them could count. She loved him, and wanted to love him. She almost lost Mulder so many times that she decided to not get caught up in whatever she felt because it could jeopardize his life and hers more than their jobs already did. She gaslit herself (just like all of their cases) into almost believing she wasn't actually in love with him. He was the only person she put her full trust in. So she would rather be not romantically involved with Him if it means that she will always have him. He finally started going for it, and while she wasn't resistant because just like the X Files deep down she knows it's real, and wants it to be real. Scully wanted him. There was so much thin ice that they stood on that there was never a good time to really be able to love each other. So it was easier to pretend, and not engage in what could be fantasy than deal with the reality of their situation.

Looking up the word, touchstone, in the urban dictionary, and this is what i found-- perfect for those two! "Touchstone Person of importance. Significant other. Your constant, the person who completes you and makes you whole. A true friend without critisms and judgements, who loves you unconditionally."

I prefer this definition which is the official one “a basis for comparison; a reference point against which other things can be evaluated.” Hes saying scully is the center of his universe and shes saying he is the center of hers.

I love how he emphasizes the "you" when he says "You were my friend, and you told me the truth". To me, he was implying that Scully, not Diana - as she had said at the beginning - was his true friend, because she never lied to him or left his side. Scully was indeed his constant, she was there for him always and I guess that was his way of making amends with her after the whole bullshit with Diana.

I finally find someone who understood that part just as I did. That emphasis on "You" for me is very important. In other words, he said, "Scully, YOU are my only friend. No Diana, she wasn't my friend. Not a tear for that traitor. YOU saved me by telling me the truth, as always." And then the "you are my constant, my touchstone" and "and you are mine" translates to "I love you. I love you too." And so the drama with Diana is closed. Can you imagine if it had been Diana there telling Mulder that Scully died? Mulder in an instant would have lost his mind, screamed, ran to meet Scully's body, would not have believed, etc. But Diana couldn't care less because at that point he had already read into her mind her evil intentions and horrendous acts. So everything that happened only helped Mulder and Scully to reaffirm their friendship and love more strongly.

Mulder is also referencing the first thing Scully says where she says “I don’t know who to trust anymore”. He basically says “ I understand, I used to feel that way but I don’t anymore because I have you”. And then she replies “and you are mine”. And I think he’s softly showing her that she doesn’t need to feel that way because he will be her constant too. ….. My heart just explodes.

@@MabyMJthis is exactly how i saw this. The YOU is very important. I never believed Mulder had any romantic feelings for Diana anyway. But he believed her as a friend, like he refused to believe Scully when she said Skinner or Deepthroat was dirty. But when he could read minds he saw her for what she was and realized Scully was right this time. And when Scully came to his bed and begged him to hold on till she find him a cure he probably saw in her mind how much she truly loved him. Also in initial drafts of the episode apparently there was a scene where he confronted Diana when he was in the hospital. But they removed it for some reason

The best part of this scene is when Scully traces Mulders lips with her fingers.You can read it in her eyes that she wants to kiss him and she sort of does through her look and touch.

They fell in love with each other when they first saw each other in that basement. The idea was to make her discredit him and maybe hate each other, but there was a respect that only grew every day, so much so that his quest also became her quest! It's a lot of love involved, yessss she kissed him with her eyes and touch. Unfortunately Chis Carter wouldn't allow their love to become real, nor have I ever looked at any friends the way they look at each other.

Chris Carter just never wanted to show it so explicitly, except in seasons 8 and 9 when we can clearly see that they were a couple. I never looked at any friend that way or touched any friend like that. much less have asking a baby for a friend. you see the tension difference between Mulder and Scully and between Dogget and Monica. Mulder and Scully had something special ❤

These two truly need each other. They become absolute messes without the other around.

A small detail, but I like how Mulder kept his head down and his eyes closed for several seconds after Scully kissed him. He was still feeling that (and perhaps absorbing the thoughts and feelings they had just exchanged), and it's how he let her (and us) know.

To answer your question, Chris Carter originally planned for Scully to just kiss Mulder on the forehead and leave. Mulder would then be sitting on his couch thinking about Diana (!!!!!!!!!) David argued that he wanted to rewrite the scene and the rest is history! Thank goodness for David Duchovny!

this was has close to a confestion of love we fans got at the time. I remember watching this scene the night it aired. I was on cloud nine for a week!

this point here for me shows when they finally admit their true feelings and show how they have felt for the longest time. i know mulder and scully fell for each other early on but they never really said it. but they showed it through just looking at each other or holding each others hand. their relationship is so pure and it just rips out my heart and throws it on the ground

One of my favorite scenes ever! When Scully looks at Mulder after kissing his forehead her eyes are telling Mulder that she is so in love with him!

This scene never gets old, so much intensity and chemistry. ❤️

Chris Carter is lying only to himself if he believes that it's a platonic sort of love between them. I can tell you I don't look at my platonic male friends like that. What these two shares goes so much deeper than friendship, and it's beautiful to watch.

I am new to the fandom and have been watching a ton of interviews and clips. I can see why fans were so infuriated by this "not a couple" couple. To never confirm that they are together romantically in 25 years is beyond frustrating and brilliant. Everyone says that if the show depends on a "will they wont they" relationship that the show is over the monent they get together. This show is amazing because their main characters had a kid together and another one on the way without once ever confirming or showing them being a real couple. Thats what helped keep it alive for almost 30 years. Talk about being late to the party.

Dude they did get together! They were lover from lage season 6 /7. The fans call season 7 the season of secret sex.

I really didn't care much for this episode, but I do indeed love this scene. I think many of us can only dream of having a love or a friendship this powerful.

I love how even after Scully said that Fowley was murdered, the thing that lingered the most to Mulder was when Scully said she doesn't know who to trust, and that's the first thing he addressed then proceeded to assuring Scully that she is his "friend".

the end of the scene made my cry..true love between them

Scully was abducted,got cancer,lost her father and sister was murdered. She was punched on her face 3 times. Was trown agains the wall 3 x, got almost eaten up by a deadly shinning green like mosquito and acided by a fungus 6tf under. she got shot 3 times ..had a metal implanted on the back of her neck. got involved in 2 car crashes, had full contact fight with at least 3 monsters and 7 evil agents. she saw the Devil and 2 ghosts in front of her. Finally she saw Mulder either bainguing or kissing 3 women right in front of her eyes not to mention that she saved mulder´s ass in at least 22 occasions between the 1st and 6th season.. With all those FACTS and can say with all fairness: "Dana Katherine Scully You are my all time favourite Xfile !! You deserved to be kissed !!

@medi176 See, that makes it all the more special. This is proof that true intimacy doesn't have to involve sex (though, sex is fun). They are physically-attracted to each other, but that attraction also involves a mutual respect. They are able to fully trust each other, and that kind of intimacy is rare. True and complete respect and love between two intelligent people is the best kind of relationship in the world. Love these two! :)

I found out about this show at least 3 years ago and I really enjoy it. It’s really good. It’s one of my favorite shows. I own most of the seasons after it was removed from Netflix. It’s waaaaaasaaayyyyyy better than supernatural. I think it’s as good as Buffy the vampire slayer

+andrew harkins We'll never really know, but Fowley might have been there to protect Mulder the whole time. She was shady, but she came through in the end, and at the cost of her own life. Like Scully, I felt bad for hating her so much, and I think it was touching how Scully partly cried for her, as well as for Mulder. There is so much truth being revealed during this scene. Mulder looked past that, though, and focused on the other truth that Scully was the one he trusted, and of course the one he loved. Can you believe that we almost didn't get this scene? As originally written (if I recall correctly), the twist was to have been that everyone (Scully, Mulder, the audience) was ultimately wrong about Fowley, and then Mulder would mourn her and there would be a distance between Scully and him to mark that moment of shock & awe. We still got that twist in the final version of the scene, except Mulder barely hesitates (only showing a little shock and sorrow) before shifting his priority and attention to comforting and expressing his love for Scully (who is also more sympathetic in the final version). It was David Duchovny's idea, and thank goodness Chris Carter agreed.

I've heard about it somewhere, but I'm glad they refused it eventually. Fortunately, we have this final version.(Thank David). Carter sometimes treats his children M / S as a bad father. IMHO this beautiful scene proves they both have realized that their relationship is not just friendship, but true love. They honestly and openly express their feelings and not trying to hide anything. I think this is quite a crucial point in their relationship.

X file fans always hate on Chris Carter but he always listened to the actors, and acknowledged the actors knew the characters the best, he allowed changes which is a lot better then a lot of writers on some more recent series these days, tv used to feel a lot more organic.

Chris Carter always listened to the actors? He didn't. Gillian had stated that she wasn't too happy with his decision to retcon the Scully storyline. She said she wanted her character to have sex with Ed Jersey on bed, but he said no. That's why the X-Files and the Mulder-Scully shippers still hate him forever.

For me this scene especially with the ufo sandcastle at the end is my favorite emotional moment along with closure where mulder finally sees his sister. My heart can't take it

CC IS A TEASEEEER! Scully firts kissed Mulder's forehead and then touched his lips like THIS!!!! such a small thing but you don't touch your friends lips unless you want to kiss them!!!?? do you?

In this scene, Mulder and Scully essentially confessed to each other that their in love with each other. Scully brushing her fingers over his lips was her saying to him "Next time my lips go right over here". They almost kissed here but instead she kissed his forehead cause it wasn't the right time for them to kiss yet. Scully never lost her faith in her relationship with Mulder due to Fowley but she did lost her faith in herself as his partner. She thought she wasn't good enough to be his partner. That illustrates she has low self-esteem. That's why she was in a dark place emotionally hence recklessly putting herself in grave danger with CSM in En Ami. It felt like she was being almost suicidal. Losing your faith in yourself can cause that kind of behaviour. Mulder saw her mental agony and knew he had to clear it up with her once and for all otherwise he might lose her. Scully did feel betrayed by Mulder but she put her feelings aside so she could save him. During season 6, Scully was clearly angry he dismissed her concerns about Diana. The eternal difference between her and Diana was that Diana wanted Mulder for herself with not enough regard to his well-being. Scully's priority was his well-being and safety alone, she would even sacrifice her chance to be with Mulder if it meant he would be safe and happy. Diana's love was selfish and Scully's love was selfless.

Omg that look he gives her at 2:30 I don't care what people say I do believe they had strong feelings for each other or something or hell was even in love with each other,but what I NEVER understood why not give it a CHANCE !!! That's what this fucked up world is all about is about taking chances MOST of the time now in Special cases some people like in my case I just can't take that CHANCE with the Man I believe I'm in love with...He's married and I do believe he might have some feelings more than friendship but that is something I will never cause with a Married man...

+BatmanFanGirl Why is it sad? It's profound and emotional, yes, but I think it's supposed to mean that Mulder had found his purpose again. If anything, it was a catharsis, much like the previous scene--a release of the tensions that had been building over three episodes. Well, come to think of it, a scene probably can't be optimally cathartic without a little sadness or something like it--maybe in this case it's a form of nostalgia that comes before Mulder finds some peace. What do you think?

So beautiful, but that was one confusing and terrifying episode. And the weirdest thing is that I felt what Dana said. Something happened in my past and after that I could never trust anyone anymore. I don't know why people that are supposed to love me and support me constantly try to trick me. I don't understand why even my family constantly messes with my feelings and mind. Why that one person I trusted the most, screwed me up big time and told lies about me. Or should I say: All people I have ever trusted turned around and backstapped me. I have no idea why I deserve this. I wish I had a Mulder right now. Someone I can trust and rely on no matter what anyone else would say or do. I guess I never had a Fox Mulder in my life....

Now time has passed - people ask what the appeal of this show was. Fans say the chemistry between the leads....just watch this and it'll become clear

I waited so long them to kiss in this scene.Especially when Scully traces her fingers on Mulders face. My reaction was like cmon kiss each other pls.But they ended only with forehead kiss🤦‍♂️
