X Factor- Johnny Rotten Blasts Show As Millions To Watch Joe McElderry Olly Murs & Stacey Solomon

Former Sex Pistols star Johnny Rotten has dismissed the X Factor as a "mug's paradise".
With millions preparing to tune in to the final weekend of the hit ITV show, the singer said the show's makers were churning out a "repetitive deluge" of similar sounding music.
Speaking to Sky News, he said: "I cannot hate it - I love pop music. The more the merrier, the more variety you've got the better.
"But it's the endless repetitive deluge of similar sounding things that kind of peeve me."
Joe McElderry, Olly Murs and Stacey Solomon will do battle in the final two shows for a record deal that could launch their careers.
A YouGov poll commissioned by The Sun newspaper says 18-year-old McElderry is set to win by a landslide, bagging 43% of the votes.
A two-hour special tonight will see the three singers whittled down to two.

There will never be anything like punk again. Why? Because if it ain't created/controlled by the media, it doesn't stand a fucking chance. RIP British culture

Some of you are just missing the entire point about MALCOLM MCCLAREN. He was an entrepreneur, who wanted to make a load of money out of fooling the public into buying music from a band who couldn't play or sing. REMIND YOU OF ANYONE? CALLED COWELL MAYBE? Why do you think McClaren called it a SWINDLE? Comments are right that the Stooges and MC5 were the original punks. You can see how Iggy goes strong to this day which is the test of a great musician. Check my Iggy vids from last year lol!

it peeves us too John... we're sick and tired of the template bands or individuals foisted upon us - do the girl and boy bands sound any different from each other? ... And all for the sake of some music executive's pay packet. Give us a choice of sound... let the market decide!

See, that kind of miscontrued opinion can only me manifested long after the actual event. 1) you were never around when it was happening 2) Sex Pistols formed Aug 75 - not 74. 3) Joy Division copied nothing from Can, they did copy/borrow a few riffs from Neu! But you wouldn't know the difference cos the BBC didn't. And then you go on to state that there hasn't been much original from America in "recent decades"!? You're having a laugh, right? or you only listen to Radio 1 and still read NME.

@waltzingperer is right. Even before those bands there was 60's Garage Punk. Even Paul Cook admits it on his radio show "Jonesy's JukeBox" 3rd October 2005 where he humbly interviews New York's Richard Hell. You can hear mp3 of the interview online on richardhell website or GOOGLE joneseys jukebox richard hell

Yes they do that a lot and it annoys me too. You are right to be suspicious about their claims but in this case they are right. Pistols were one of my fave bands when I was a teen as were Joy Division who I later noticed were a rip-off of German band Can. I also love Brian Eno's work but he literally took (on magnetic take that he recorded in Berlin) his ideas from "Krautrock". Check the youtube BBC doco on KrautRock and you might reassess your own country's originality.

I think Steve Jones' opinion counts more than yours. Have a listen to that interview he (not Paul Cook, I made a mistake before) did with Richard Hell. It is not identical but the influences are there. It is not a coincidence that McLaren recycled the term "punk" in honour of American 60's garage punk.

Actually I take back what I said. MC5's 1969 song "Kick Out the Jams" was as close to Pistols as any Ramones song. watch?v=uwFeN0Zl1bQ

@averilleX Cos you know where I'll find members of The Clash if i did wanna run into them? Down Kensington Palace Gardens or wherever, where the houses cost about £15million. Don't tell me what's what, I've been through the whole scene and have the t-shirt. AND I CERTAINLY WONT BE SLITTING MY WRISTS NOW AFTER COMING THRU ALL THAT!

What's crazy is that this still sounds fresh. The love for mediocrity persists. Thank God he didn't pick up a god damn ukelele and start playing all that twee shit. If I see or hear one more of those I'm gonna burn it. 😠😷

MC-5 formed in 1964, Ramones formed ten years later in 1974. Naturally the metamorphosis by 1974 is going to sound closer to the Pistols 1977 sound. No art is created in isolation and no art is 100% original which is why Steve Jone's half-jokingly notes that banging two rocks together could be argued to be the start of punk. It is pointless splitting hairs on who was first. What is important is having a sense of humility and a respectful acknowledgement of one's predecessors.

How precise do the facts need to be for you? Or are you just hell bent on America bashing? Why can't you accept that from a population of 300 million people there will be some pioneers? True there hasn't been much original from USA in recent decades but give them credit where it is due.

@eldospinks The whole point about the Rock N Roll swindle is that it WAS only about the money. You didn't have to be able to play or sing. Just throw abuse about, to cover the gaps. Why do you think all the "punkiest" guys have married into rich aristocratic families? It was always about making a quick buck.

  • @averilleX

@eldospinks Can we call it a truce then? My comment was a year old. It's just that some of the kids, they're just trying to make it any way they can and i can't blame them really. I don't like the modern reality tv stuff any more than you do but it's the way things are now ... are not the Pistols partly responsible for that actually?
