About modern jazz or improvised jazz: At certain times, certain musical groups or musicians playing certain pieces cause the logical analytical side of my brain to be in deep conflict with the aesthetic emotional side. And at other times, the very same musicians playing another piece cause both sides of my brain to experience blissful cathartic harmony. Perhaps this is what jazz is meant to do for the listener. To learn to appreciate the relationship of both cerebral hemispheres and how they form our perceptions of truth, compromise & beauty in the framework of a musical state of reality as a metaphor for our collective humanitarian existence. Conflict or harmony. Both work together to create our world. Perhaps if it were all only blissful harmony, then it would become like lounge music; boringly repetitive, vacuous and somewhat annoying. Familiarity breeds contempt. For that reason I have settled with a love-hate appreciation of jazz. I tolerate it at times for the greater good and I praise & adore it at times for it's sheer artistic genius.
