Yes, the first tune was recorded by Roy Brooks "live" at Smalls Paradise in NYC…..I engineered the recording for Roy which featured Eddie Jefferson on vocals (which we later overdubbed in my "closet" in New Jersey….lol)……I mastered and pressed the recording through RCA Records back then too…….Good stuff on that recording…..

Beautiful !!! Mr Barron's relaxed stage presence provides the perfect ambiance for a memorable night of Jazz as it is intended to be presented. PURE SWINGING CLASS ! Great Band and especially appreciated the heartfelt rendition of the " Mulgrew " tune. .... ( same feel as " ALONG CAME BETTY " ) .

I guess I'm dating myself, but the first tune of the set is Roy Brooks' "The smart set" recorded by him on "Ethnic Expressions" album, The tune (perhaps not surprisingly as Roy Brooks has spent long time playing in Horace Silver's group) seems to be influenced by Horace's writing. It's possible, (I'm just speculating) that Kenny has played this tune with Yusef Lateef in whose band Roy Brooks has worked through the years beginning with Detroit's "Blue Bird Inn".

Yes, yes, yes, my percussion teacher, the late great drummist, Mjumbe , aka, Roy Brooks wrote this tune, "The Smart Set"! I got to perform this tune with Baba Mjumbe in 1970s, with his group The Aboriginal Percussion Choir!

I'm wondering how drummer keep the time like in 10:40 , is he listening on the bass or he do some kind of beat counting(i don't know what he name). Because I think that's really2 hard. it's like shifting the tempo and going back.

:) hello. I solo while singing the melody in my head. No counting. Music is only numbers on paper but from the heart and soul when it comes to improving. 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾 So I listen and sing with everyone while having a conversation with my instrument becoming my voice.
