WWOOFing Switzerland: The Lone WWOOF in the Swiss Alps

Part One of my WWOOFing adventure takes place in the German-speaking region of Switzerland. From cherry-picking to haying to making pickled beets, I had a happy introduction to life on an organic farm, laying the basic foundation for the rest of my WWOOFing journey. For the backstory on haying challenges and my hard rocker host, check out the posts on www.whitinthewild.com!

WWOOFing in Switzerland is an unbeatable experience--I can't recommend it enough! To access the WWOOF Switzerland list of farms, check out the website (zapfig.com/wwoof/). This particular farm is the one in Praden. They're a wonderful family; I can also highly recommend my two other WWOOF hosts in Switzerland. Check out my website for more info (whitinthewild.com/the-lone-wwoof/) and stories from four other farms in Switzerland, Italy, and Northern Ireland. :) Direct contact details for hosts comes with WWOOF registration. Good luck with your travels, and feel free to leave notes and ask questions!

+driss bouychou Hi! I'm so glad you're thinking about wwoofing, and Switzerland is a truly beautiful place to do it. I don't know which visa is required coming from Morocco, so you will probably need to check on a Swiss government page or with your embassy. Typically a tourist visa is fine, as wwoofing is volunteer work and doesn't require a work visa. For finding hosts, you will need to register with WWOOF Switzerland (check their website). It's a very small fee to become a member, and with membership you gain access to all the farms and their contact info. From there you can research which type of farm and what region you want to visit, and then reach out to the hosts themselves to find out if they have an opening for a wwoofer. Good communication with the hosts is important so you can get to know each other and be sure expectations on both sides are clear. I love my WWOOF hosts and wish you lots of luck! Happy travels. :)

Hello Whitney! I hope you can read and answer my comment taking into account that you've uploaded this video last year. I'm planning to have my first wwoofing experience next year in Switzerland, but I'm kind of scared because of the language they speak in there! I want to know if there are some English speakers around, and how you deal with it. Thank you, greetings from Paraguay

Hi Roberto! Thanks so much for your comment. I'm stoked you're going to WWOOF! Switzerland has many languages in a small area, so it depends on which region you'll be working whether you'll be surrounded by Swiss German, French, or Italian. I spoke some German before heading to Switzerland, but often relied on English speakers, especially in the French region. Because the Swiss speak many languages, English isn't always a priority, especially in rural areas, but I wouldn't let that deter you. Working through language barriers is part of the challenge and reward of travel! It's good to communicate with your hosts in advance to make sure you'll be able to understand each other (there are many hosts, so you'll find a good fit, don't worry), but otherwise getting around the country won't be too difficult. I do recommend learning some basic phrases before you head over, just to make it easier to navigate and communicate. Everyone will appreciate your efforts, but they won't expect you to know everything. :-) Good luck and happy travels!
