Same. Theme songs that fits the wrestlers/shows, Unique stages for PPVs and shows, Entrance videos on the titantron and name animations on the minitrons, Pre-match build-up promo videos. Most of those, if not all, are gone now. I can't even remember the last time I saw a build up promo before a main event match started on a PPV.

I remember growing up and thinking that guys like Randy Orton, Edge, Triple H and Batista all sang their own theme songs because they fit so well with their characters.. today it’s hard to tell who’s coming out because all these generic instrumentals all sound the same..

Mr. Kennedy’s entrance was so convincing to me.

One thing that helped old themes (apart from them all having unique feels and compositions) was a lot of them had an instantly recognizable intro before the music itself starts: Foley's car crash, Rock's catchphrase, Austin's glass, Taker's bell, etc. You could play those sounds alone, followed by complete silence with no ring announcement and everyone watching would still know exactly who's coming out. Now there's no intro just some generic rock or metal track that barely anyone can tell apart from the myriad of others.

definitely, Bret Hart's pew laser thing at the beginning is probably 1 of the most recognized ones out there, like you hear it play and you instantly know it's him.

Not only are the theme songs getting bad for the actual wrestlers, we’re stuck with generic themes for the characters we create through WWE2K as well and it’s PAINFUL.

Right me and my niggas been creating characters since Wrestlemania 2000 and every major title( Day of Recking and SVR series) giving them complex backgrounds and Rivalry(Beef) stories. The best moment when we created our roster on 07 for xbox360/ps3 and we was able to give our charaters music we had rip on the system. I cant understand how we got all this new tech and we cant do stuff like we use too.( dumbass copyright laws i guess). Fast Foward to today we still doin the same thing creating 25 CAW per show including nxt, but only with lame ass music amd titantrons videos

When Jim Johnston made the music, no matter who the superstar if they’re a jobber or mid carder or even a main eventer they would have some iconic theme songs like drew McIntyre’s Broken dreams theme just slaps or Evan Bourne’s theme too was a good one… and I wish I could hire him to make theme music for like my character in the video games if custom music would come back as a feature that is.

@@aerostrafe1075 they were hired by Jim Johnson to make the song, kinda like how he hired Motörhead for all of triple h’s themes, or saliva for I walk alone (batistas theme) but as with all those songs Jim Johnston wrote the song but the bands were the ones playing it that’s why if you go on like Apple Music if the artist has the song on their profile it normally has a wwe banner on the song cover

Jim Johnston was awesome at this. Why they let him go, let alone not put him into the HoF, is beyond me. Jim, and the music he made for these superstars helped make them who they are.

the thing with WWE themes now is that def rebel is giving wrestlers "new themes" and they don't sound different

I miss the old titantron when the wrestler enter in a ring and there was the video showing the wrestler's actions now they only show the names and nothing else

I used to buy the "WWF: The Music" cds when they came out. I had up to volume 5. Undertaker's ministry with the electric guitar, Triple H's the game (I love me some motorhead) and Jericho's break the wall down were some that got alot of play

Another thing to note is there's no more titantrons of the wrestler wrestling anymore which I think absolutely stinks and that doesn't help these theme song either

I also miss the promos the wrestlers had, a mashup of their highlights while their song is playing made it feel amazing. Nowadays it’s generic music and a blank background with just their name.

Also I agree with what you said about theme songs when someone turned heel. The Rock, Eddie Guerrero and Victoria had the same theme songs when they were heel, but only changed how the instruments are played or the heel version is slowed down. Personally, I love how Jim Johnston was able to make Eddie's I Lie I Cheat I Steal to Lie Cheat Steal. It was much slower, the bass is a bit heavier, and the happy-type instruments were turned into something that sounds a bit dark. You can tell that he really loves what he's doing.

That doesn't mean they are crappy, They did Aliester Black theme and easily could've done for Corbin he just has a higher respect for Jim like most of us.

I loved the good old days of when every wrestler not only had an epic entrance theme but a unique sound that fit their character, when you heard it whether it was 'IF YOU SMELL', glass breaking or the gong, you knew straight away who was coming and a big part of was down to Jim Johnston who made themes that fit them perfectly. These days every theme sounds the same and unoriginal, they even use a popular song from the charts which is one of the main reasons why the element of surprise in wrestling has died.

Nothing hurt me more than Keith Lee’s main roster debut, hearing “Bask in his glory!” Followed by the royalty free rock😪

Loved Christian's (Just Close Your Eyes 2004-2005), Dolph Ziggler's (I am Perfection 2009-2011), Zack Ryder's (Oh Radio 2009-2016), Randy Orton's (Burn in My Light 2004-2008), Cody Rhodes' (Smoke and Mirrors 2010) and Deuce and Domino's (I'm All About Cool) theme songs. I used to have a playlist with those songs, and some more, and listen to them whenever I'm traveling.

I’ve also noticed the stage and entrance ramp is flashier but it’s overall a lot “smaller” in scale. I I try to remember how the ramp looked when Triple H returned in 2002, it felt grand, huge, larger than life, now the ramp looks more like what they used to have in house shows.

One example of music made for an specific wrestler is John Morrison’s theme song I love that song and it make him look soooo cool

@@DemonArshan @Demon Arshan I think a problem with defrebel is that before they got involved with WWE, from what I understand and was told, they made jingles. So they it appears they didn't previously have much experience making full songs, especially theme songs for on-screen characters. Defrebel started off good, Cesaro was the first person with a theme from them and his theme was GREAT. But then they started getting worse and worse, and now they're just abysmal. I do agree with CFO's tracks get people on their feet. They win over defrebel for that. Unfortunately, CFO are no longer a group. :(

You are absolutely correct , theme songs that Jim wrote were amazing and they just fit the charachter and those theme songs made you care about a certain superstar , for example when Baron Corbin had the "End of days" written by Jim I thought he was going to be a huge star , but when you see him with this trash that he has now I just gave up on the guy and don't care at all.

3:57 what's sad is that I actually remember the theme songs of about 80% of the wrestlers on that graphic. 10 years from now, if I see a pic of today's roster, I doubt I would remember half.

Through my teenage years I developed an interest in rock / metal music and it only happened to me because of the love I had for wwe music back in mid 2000s to early 2010s , songs like triple h's the game, it is frustrating how every sweet thing comes to an end and you're only left with the memory

Im watching thi video now but the part where you said about the royal rumble is exactly what I had in mind. It's sad to see how far wwe has fallen. I really don't care except for a handful of wrestlers now. It's too generic and no emotion attached. It's so lame. You are really the great one for exactly echoing our minds.😀

That's why I miss Jim Johnston a lot in WWE. He always composed the most appropriate themes and songs for each and every wrestler. He was the most special music composer for WWE.

I’ll always appreciate Jim for making Taka Minchinoku’s theme from the Attitude era. That theme was an absolute banger. I sometimes listen to that at the gym.

Its even worse by the fact that that WWE loyalists seem to forgot how important music is and whenever I bring it up you see people who are like "Oh I skip through the entrances, who cares, music isn't that important" like are you serious?

They are probably the ones who started watching during the pandemic era so they got used to the generic themes. Only an early 2000 or 2010 fans get how important music is for a gimmick to work.

Themes nowadays: Jobbers: ok, lets work ok on this, not super hard Mid-carders: AY LETS USE GENERIC THEME #9 Main eventers: lets be very gentle, and let this theme count. I know it will go hard!

Great video. I think you're selling CFO$ a bit short as they have A LOT of excellent songs, maybe even rivalling Johnston for quality - but your general point is spot on. I don't watch the E much any more but playing WWE 2k22, there are some themes that I don't even recognise. Honestly the only Def Rebel songs I like are Mandy Rose/Toxic Attraction's, Lashley's, and honestly I do like Sami's, it's growing on me. Great wrestling music enhances the overall product, plus it's such an easy way to do so. The shift away from Rock and Metal music to things with the same Tuba/insert other booming brass instrument here is frustrating as a lot of the hype disappears. Look at Raw's Across the Nation or even to a lesser extent To Be Loved as great examples of how this can bring a crowd or viewing audience up just by hearing them, and compare with the current Raw and Smackdown themes, which put me to sleep. If you've ever watched the video from a couple of years ago where they remade the current Raw intro with Across the Nation, you will know that it makes the show look and feel more exciting, along with making the wrestlers look like complete badasses. You only have to see the reaction of the crowd when Jeff Hardy came out on Dynamite this week because they INSTANTLY recognised the theme song and everything that comes with it. Just like when he brought No More Words back, it made the character and the show better. Do better WWE, it's not hard. You have tremendous wrestlers but instead of helping them be the best they can possibly be, you are holding them back.

And they wonder why over half the Royal Rumble participants don’t get reactions. Nobody has a theme song that stands out

Also most old WWE theme songs we're real artists and introduced me to new bands I wouldn't have listened to otherwise.

To put it this way: I have wwe songs from years ago on my playlists, not a single one from the last 5 years

There are/were a few outliers, recently; such as: Sheamus, Asuka, Shinsuke, Sami Zayn (NXT theme), Kevin Owens, Bray Wyatt, The Fiend, and possibly Drew McIntyre. Most of these that I have on a WWE- themes workout playlist.

Surprised you didn't mention Keith Lee. He had a fantastic theme song, instantly recognizable, then he entered the main roster and got some of most generic song ever. Even if the gimmicks weren't that good at least the characters you used to have a fitting theme song like Kervin White, the Spirit Squad, Heidenreich or the Boogeyman. Modern theme songs feel like the original ones you get in Make an Entrance mode in a WWE game

The problem is exactly what you said. They nerfed his theme before he got on the main brand. No one is gonna remember the theme if it had a short run in the 3rd brand

I think the best example I can think of is Titus O'neils heel theme, holy shit that slapped so hard even when his booking was bad it could have easily been the theme of a champion or some absolute unit that just mows through people

WWE from the early to mid 90's had the best entrance music. Hogan, Warrior, Savage, DiBiase, Jake Roberts, Mr. Perfect, Demolition, and Undertaker all had great music.

Sasha Banks had the best ngl

CFO$ did good too. He made Finn Balor, K.O. , Sheamus and even Drew's theme

Can’t agree with you more. One of the reasons I stopped watching WWE apart from the releases was replacing good theme songs with ugly ones. I have lost all hope with WwE now

I really want to get back into WWE, but it’s kind of lost its spark. They seem to have taken the personality out of wrestling. Like they took away really good themes, then they removed the titantrons??? Like do they just want us to hate entrances all together? Sigh.

I'm used hearing the old themes too. Like Kane's theme that had lyrics. At least I can still hear all of others on WWE SVR 2009 - 2011 on the PSP since the announcers can't be heard on in-game in that port

The simple way to describe it that theme songs used to be made to be actual songs. But now its essentially made to be played on loop to play as long as needed

Remember Adam Cole's new theme toward the tail end of his NXT/WWE career? It was godawful.

Jon moxley's first theme was generic His second theme wasn't the original as onita was using that song for 30 years.

Music is so vital to me. I have a Playlist of WWE music on my channel and I don't update it as much anymore. Even the pay per view music was so much better before.

2018 had the best graphics and visuals. 2018 and before had the best RAW & SD intro themes. Jim being released and still not being on the HOF is a literal crime. We'd have no DX, Undertaker, Rock, Orton or Stone Cold without Jim.

Duude look at those championships. Titles used to look like legit championships, not toy belts.

The late 2010s were still great imo. I liked CFO$ generally. This most recent royal rumble was hilarious because half the time I couldn't tell who was entering. As a very casual fan, it's amazing how few of the wrestlers have tunes that actually stick in your head.

This is a huge problem bothering me about current WWE as well. I used to get so hyped for a new WWE CD to come out. Now, there's nothing memorable about almost anyone's theme songs. That kills reactions for the wrestlers.

Vocals aren't even a factor. Going back to the 80s and 90s, most songs didn't have vocals but they were still different and good. Couldn't tell one song from another at this year's Rumble.

Some guys down in NXT have gotten lucky with their themes (that match their characters very well too), like Tiffany Straton and Joe Gacy but I just keep getting the feeling that their themes or characters would be lost upon arriving to Raw or Smackdown.. and that's IF they even get there.

Agreed. WWE wrestlers need better theme songs like the old days. Jim Johnston needs a return a lot of the theme songs are generic or forgettable.

It’s gotten to the point where the songs “Biscuits and Gravy” for Jesse and Festus Or “Hes Ma Da” for Hornswoggle is better than the current songs.

Jim Johnston is a legend when it comes to wrestling theme but i think CFO$ deserves a praise too. Without them we wouldn't get most of today's classic like Nakamura theme, Sasha theme and more.

I actually liked Cesaro's new theme, when it had the pictures come up it just made Cesaro feel big.

To be fair yes, Jim Johnston is the GOAT, period. However, Someone who comes close in second is Yonosuke Kitamura in NJPW. He knows how to make a theme!

The CFO$ era was characterized by one thing: whether the song was good or bad in any case it was a track recorded for 30 seconds and repeated for 3 minutes. When def rebel started making music for the company I was very happy, the new song by Gargano was for me one of the best theme songs ever

I would go as far as to say theme songs are the most important parts to building stars. I wouldn't have even cared for Batista when I was little had he not had an amazing theme song

I miss both Jim Johnston & CFO$. Jim Johnston was a legend and CFO$ was still good. I think Becky Lynch's "Celtic Invasion" or Nakamura's "The Rising Sun" were CFO$'s best theme songs tbh.

I hope HHH will bring Jim Johnson back he’s so good at making themes like you said even some themes didint have words and it still worked. Vince was out of touch since 2017
