WW1: Hidden Traces

Ойын-сауық

The First World War: soldiers from at least 20 countries were plunged in the hell of trenches and caught under a deluge of bombs. A century later, archaeologists help bring to light the daily life of the soldiers fighting on the French Eastern Front and reveal unexpected aspects of life on the front.

My Grandad was at the Somme and Ypres. I knew him. He told me about it. He was by profession a horse man looking after plough horses. He never talked about the human side. What upset him was having to put down injured horses as the corrals were shelled regularly. Excellent documentary. I understand the archaeology. I hope the remains are re buried with dignity, they are someones Grandad.

Just come back from a war graves tour organised by my local football club we stayed in arras and travelled to a lot of these sites finishing up at the men in gates for the last post… walked in and out of these large shell holes and tunnels and trenches until you see the landscape and monuments for yourself you will never be able to fully appreciate it

The First World ! was fought for many reasons, nationalism was only one of them. Security was a huge motive, much as the terrible European war currently being waged in Ukraine . Very interesting & sad t program is this one. .
