WTF is Going On at This Bangkok Night Market!?

Today, is another day in the life living here in Bangkok! The wet season is here so the morning started off with some rain, and in the evening I went to my Favourite Nigght Market in Bangkok for some fun, I had a very strange experience at the night market, this was a first for me!!

Politeness is a pillar of Thai society but politeness often goes out the door at tourist venues. Some of the bands will blatantly ask for tips from audience or if a song is requested demand money in advance. This behavior would never fly at Thai venues. That would be the last time the band plays there. They can even invite you to jam and tell you to pay first. Fxxxing low life style. I prefer Thai venues as the staff are way more polite and appreciative. In my experience at some tourist venues no appreciation is shown for tips.No thank you, no wai, nothing as if tips are automatic. I stopped tipping or going to those places.

The exact thing happened to me in Pattaya. I had 3 beers in a beer bar totaling 210 baht the receipt wasn't padded as I always check after I order. When I asked to pay the girl asked for 300 baht!!! When I asked why she said tip give tip. I declined and left 210 baht and left. Then people wonder why establishments are closing left, right and center. It's not the amount but the principal of it.

Thai greed… unfortunate attitude I find quite prevalent here, especially in Bangkok. For ฿305 here in Udon, you can get a fish 3x bigger, with a big pile of vegetables, noodles and various dipping sauces, with a spicy somtum and you’ll still have ฿50 left over!!! That business is a joker, not to get negative or anything but it’s helpful to have a good balance of what is good and bad about living in Thailand.

I have a lock on my wallet when I'm in Thailand. She's my Thai wife, and if anyone tries to ripp me off or treat me like a Ferang, she stop them instantly. The scariest part about every time I come back is the increasing prices and how the standard of treatment towards ferangs being treated as walking targets to be ripped off Thailand is becoming like Vietnam.😢 it's sad cause it used to be so much better.

The One Ratchada Market used to be the Night Train Market before Covid. It was incredibly crowded back then. They closed it during Covid and I believe re-opened it behind the Central Mall in Phra Ram 9 and called the Jodd Fairs Night Market. Recently I saw them building the new market behind The Esplanade. Maybe it is just new and getting started. It used to be popular so maybe it will be again one day.

He had to pay a huge fine because he said the beer wasn’t good. 🙁 There was another incident involving a foreigner giving a hotel or a resort a bad review. I can’t recall if he spent two weeks in jail or if he was fined.

I think this is a MASSIVE indicator of the times globally. So many western countries are struggling under the weight of inflation. I know it’s slow season there and seasonality is a factor at play here. But, I also think that’s why Thailand is pushing for the DTV visa. In the USA there have been so many layoffs in tech, fewer job postings, consumers are not as confident as years prior… all signs of deteriorating markets in western countries. I think the USA is poised for a big economic correction and tourism late this year and early 25 is going to hit Thailand pretty hard.

The crazy tip culture is from foreigners like American, now we Thai people also have to pay tip in some places like massage so I always hate when some tourists said they pay good tip for the service in Thailand because they start this stupid tipping trend. In Thailand we pay the tip for the nice expensive restaurant only, not the street food. We don’t normally pay tip for the salon , taxi driver or delivery like the American, so pls stop doing it here, it’s bad for us local Thai customers. The reason you should stop bringing tip culture here because firstly they will feel thankful for the tip but later on they will demand the tip automatically, like what it’s already happen in America now.

You may have added VAT to your bill at most restaurants in Thailand, but there is no requirement for tips. However, the fee is already added into the pricing at most smaller food stalls and street vendors. The fish for 300 Baht was already expensive...that should be at least half the price in BKK! Glad you refused to pay the extorted tip.

Tipping is mostly not a thing in Thailand. If you try to tip at at a restaurant, you will probably get weird stares, and the server will be like, what is this for? And tipping in restaurants in America is usually for table service where you have a waiter serving you, and it's usually not over 20% of the bill... 30% is WAY too much. I remember a time in America when tip was only 10 or 12 percent. But greedy tip inflation happened, so it's now more like 18 to 20 percent of the bill nowadays. We went from 10 to 12 to 15 to 18 to 20 percent, such a slippery slope. What is that food vendor expecting extra tip for? They didn't provide you table service or go above and beyond to deserve it, which is what a tip is supposed to be for. Although, I hear people are tipping their food delivery people over there, like Grab food delivery. Food delivery people make very little, kicking them an extra 20 to 50 baht won't break the bank and will brighten their day.

Service charges of 10-20% are pretty much standard practise in the west now, maybe some SE asian places are catching on and thinking they can get away with it with farangs even though tipping isn't de rigueur out there. One place in my home town in the UK that tried to rip me off recently (£10 for noodles + cost of the menu dish...) got busted for illegal workers - so it seems these more scammy places will employ many different techniques to make more money 'on the side'...

Was there in January ‘24 and it was busyish but not crazy. I really didn’t like all the gimmicky food that was obviously only there cater to the Chinese tourists that were the majority of the patrons. The night life side was also dead as well. Sad, because I loved the general area just the market kinda sucked.
