What I like about TF2 is that even in the chaos, you can tell that the enemy Heavy wasn't killed by a crit but the Scout was and it all depends on how horrible their screams were.

Unironically earned crits such as the frontier justice are okay. Since you have to earn them, making them NOT random. And it shines bright, so enemies know exactly that you have stored crits, so they are prepared for an encounter, if they see you in time.

258th Hi Guy Class normally scream when they get killed by a crit. As you can see on the kill feed, it only showed 1 highlighted kill, which is the scout. And the one before the highlighted kill also appears as soon as the heavy dies. The heavy was killed by the minigun, which is further proven by looking at the ally heavy that appears in front of Dane doing the firing stance. Also the enemy heavy didn't scream, he just grunted when he died. And the kill feed shows that he didn't get killed by a crit.

dane definitely killed the heavy. the first hit clearly deals 144 damage to the heavy. if the heavy killed the other heavy, surely dane must have got the assist. but dane didn't get any credit for the scout because he didn't hit him, the heavy ate the second shot.

That would be an unnecessary nerf, to be honest. Having the ability to crit after your sentry gets destroyed is balanced by the fact that it only has 3 shots. You have to make your shots count if you want to land those crits, which rewards skill.

I guess that could work, but I honestly don't think the Frontier Justice needs to be changed period. On top of the crits being offset with the smaller clip size, it's also balanced by the fact that the Engineer himself is a squishy class with very little mobility options that don't hurt him. The damage output of the crit Frontier Justice will take out a Soldier with one shot at point blank range, but that would mean having to weave through his just as lethal rocket launcher. Mini crits would require TWO shots that need to be aimed, which gives the Soldier enough time to blow you up to next week.

I personally just don't like the concept of weapons doing 100 to instant kill damage in one hit instantly without falloff. Even if it is hard to earn the crits, it doesn't feel fair to die when you should have had the upperhand in a fight. Imagine being the heavy, seeing an engie with his sentry only level 1, jumping in and then instantly dying to crits that you could not see coming or control. I feel the same about the diamond back, it just feels like you get cheated when you dye to those guns.

The thing about the Frontier Justice crits, and any shotgun crits for that matter is that it does have falloff. Well, technically it doesn't, but with each individual pellets spreading apart, the truth is you aren't going to do an instakill hit from far away; you're going to have to do it up close and personal. And for what you said about the Heavy feeling cheated from dying to something he couldn't "see" or control; it is true that the Heavy can't control when the Engineer gets those crits (unless he's the one who destroyed the sentry), but it is entirely possible to see when the Engie has crits or not. The Frontier Justice has a noticeable glow when it has crits, so it isn't entirely unfair. Besides, if a Heavy were to rev up around the corner against a Frontier Justice Engie, the Heavy would probably win the exchange. A crit shot does about 270 damage, meaning a Heavy could tank a shot and destroy the Engie with his 500 damage minigun, given that the Heavy doesn't miss and has enough health.
