Wrist Ligament Surgery

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

www.handandwristinstitute.com/... - As the hand and wrist are extremely delicate parts of the body, the ligaments that ensure the bones stay in the right position are very important for movement. Should these ligaments become disrupted or moved out of place, pain, and function loss can occur, as well as the premature development of arthritis. Most likely, these injuries occur when the patient falls on the outstretched wrist, which is often seen in athletic injuries. Because of the non-bony nature of ligaments, it is easy to miss tears to them on a standard X-ray, which is why it is important for patients suffering from them to see a specialist for more effective diagnosis and treatment so that the injury is not misdiagnosed.
Of the ligaments in the wrist, it is most common to see injury to the scapholunate ligament, which connects the scaphoid and the lunate, and the lunotriqutral ligament, which serves the same purpose for the lunate and triquetrum bones.
The aforementioned unreliability of traditional x-rays means that a more indicative test, the MR-Arthrogram, is generally necessary to determine injury to these tendons. The radiocarpal joint in injected with dye, and if the dye flows from there to the midcarpal joint, then a torn ligament is very likely. Even though an image like this will indicate injury in about 70% of cases, even a normal MRA does not necessarily ensure that the ligaments are not torn.
If the tear to the ligaments are only partial, then a four to six week regimen of splinting may be effective in allowing sufficient immobilization for healing. Should this prove ineffective, and if the injury is caught in time, then there is a three-month window in which an arthroscopic procedure may allow the injury to be corrected, and this procedure is found to be effective in 80% of cases.
Often, however, the damage to the ligaments may be more substantial, such that they cannot be reattached to the bone. If this is the case, a small vacuum-like tool is used to clean up the torn edges and scar tissue on the ligament, after which time tiny metal pins are installed in the wrist to hold the bones together and allow the ligaments to rebuild themselves and develop some scar tissue.
An eight-week period of immobilization is necessary after this type of procedure, facilitated with a brace. After eight weeks, surgery is undergone to remove the pins, and then three months of therapy are necessary to return use of the hand of full function. If diagnosed in a reasonable amount of time, this minimally invasive procedure should prove effective in reducing symptoms and returning to full function.

I have a type 2 lunate and a torn ligament, not due to any injury. I am also hyper mobile. My hand surgeon stated only surgery could remedy the chronic discomfort. Why is there only an 80% recovery rate?

i tore the ligament in my right wrist 8 years ago. went to several orthopedic surgeons. got lots of MRIs and x-rays but no doctor wants to do surgery. so now i have torn the ligament in my left wrist about a year ago so now i don’t even bother going to a doctor. its a waste of time

I've had 2 MRI's and 1 XRAY done on my wrist. I have pain with push ups and when i flex my wrist backwards. I've seen 4 hand surgeons and all of them said the same thing which was I don't know what to tell you... The last hand surgeon I seen, she said that I had a TFCC tear and that's not the part that even bothers me. So they aren't going to be fixing that problem. The area that bothers me on the wrist is where the index finger and middle finger ligament connects. There is also an occult cyst that is 4mm but they told me that it was too small to be causing me pain. I've had ultra sound injections to extract the cyst with no luck. I've also taken 3 months of physical therapy which only seemed to make my wrist in so much more pain than when i started. I have no idea what to do at this point as I've been seeing the hand surgeons for 3 years now and still nothing besides cortazone shots that make my wrist feel even worst than it did before the injection. So i'm asking for your opinion to see what other possibilities that could be the cause to this pain.

Ugh, I'm scared now... I just had tendinitis surgery for my thumb, my wrists still hurts, but he didn't do any repairs there, he just said that it should relieve the pain.

So a little update: That surgeon finally did a cyst removal surgery and she asked me if the tfcc side hurts now and i told her yes it kind of does. During the removal of the cyst she took an arthroscopy to the tfcc to find a severe tear in the tendon. She repaired the tendon after she took out the cyst. I had pain after surgery for about 2 years and as of now its just now starting to become a normal working wrist with little to mild pain. A lot less pain than before surgery and I can also do pushups now just not as many as I was able to do before.

@@MrDevonAlert good to hear that, question, I have a partial tearin in my central wrist ligament.. the question is, should I ask or insist on a surgery or not? often feel like my wrist tears apart, still doing PT after 4 months, at this point I'm doing a surgeon second opinion.. living in pain hasn't been pleasant.

@@rayglez824 If PT isn't helping then yes ask for surgery. If the surgeon denies surgery then look for another surgeon(hand specialist). I've seen hand surgeons who said "no, that isn't necessary". But when I finally got surgery done it took awhile to heal but when it did. There's definitely a night and day difference in pain, range of motion, and the ability to do normal every day activities again.

This is what I need after reciving a servere injury in my hand, because it twisted by a security officer using excessive force for no good reason other than the door I exited was glass, and it slammed shut behind me... just totally not my fault at all, and I was assaulted. But when I went to the ER and had an x-ray done, no broken bones, just entire arm to my shoulder was swollen, couldn't work for 3 weeks. My hand, elbow and shoulder hurts more and more every year. Now I can't even pick up my toddlers, workout using my hands for weights or pushups, and turning, pulling or holding anything! Not only that, but my elbow, and shoulder doesn't work well either, the entire arm is useless and in pain, and probably need surgery on those as well. I wouldn't wish this on anyone.

Wow. How is it possible that I get a better explanation about tendon damage in the wrist from a doc on YT than I do from the doctor I saw in person yesterday?? And why why why, was I not offered an x-ray and/or MRI BEFORE being referred to a Musculoskeletal department, whom without having a picture of what's going on inside will fiddle with and manipulate my hand potentially causing more damage?? Answer: because I live in the UK😒

I injured my wrist yesterday. I heard a pop followed by extreme pain. I literally woke up and couldn’t move my arm or wrist without screaming. I went to urgent care today and got a splint. X-Rays came back negative but now I’m wondering if I need an MRI. Can I ask, how painful was your injury? I just don’t know if I have a fully torn ligament or just a partial tear…Any help would be appreciated. And good luck with the surgery!!

I have a wrist pain when I bend it backwards or when I put pressure on it while doing a push up. It's in the middle part of the wrist on the upper side and I do not know if it is a median nerve injury or a wrist fracture or a ligament tear or carpal tunnel. My thumb and all other fingers are fine, I have no numbness or problems of any sort while doing any lifting. It only pains when I bend my wrist backwards. It has been there for more than 3 years now. I did not get it diagnosed because I could not afford it. I am from India. What should I do? I also gave it a rest for 2 years but it was still there.

Akshat Sharma I broke my wrist 10 years ago dirt biking and I have the same pain you do I was told I have a cyst in my wrist and that I have early stages of arthritis I'm scheduled for an mri because the doctor thinks I might have torn something You should probably see a hand surgeon because a regular doctor won't be able to identify what's wrong

I took my case to an orthopedic doctor and he told me I have a cyst as well and about two weeks ago, I got a cortico-steroid shot right at the point where it hurts and I think it burst the cyst open and now, it's pretty much recovered, not as good as it used to be before the injury but still good enough to make me hopeful I won't need a surgery. Hope you get out of it as well mate!

guys I have the exact same thing, it happened after i fell on my wrist during a basketball match in my early teenage years, about 20 years ago. they x rayed and said i broke a small bit of bone and sent me home in a compression bandage! since then i have had increasing pain over the years, but its exactly like you both describe!! I am at a total loss what to do, I went to the doctor but they just said a cyst as well, but i know thats not what it is, its a rock hard lump on my wrist and i have the same pain doing a press up or pushing hard on that part of my wrist. I feel im going to have to get private surgery to fix this.

im on the nhs waiting list as of today after going to an appointment with my gp this afternoon. She was totally useless though, wasnt even remotely interested. I definitely need surgery on it now. I feel it gets painful in winter and cold days, and its on my left wrist, and being left handed im sure this will only get worse with age. Well, I know it IS getting worse with age, it happened in my early teens and that was over 20 years ago!
