After 17 years my washing machine decided the best thing it could do was fill my basement with water. So as of December 1st 2021 I started washing all our laundry by hand. I don't have the plunger like he has I just spread my fingers apart and with each hand up-and-down back-and-forth there's my agitator. What we really found surprising, startling and downright amazing is all our laundry is so much cleaner than it was coming out of the washing machine and we line dry everything.

I had started hand washing our clothes when my son was born as we used cloth diapers for him. I had found our clothes smelled better being air dried, felt softer to wear, and if there were any stains I found the sun to be a great natural bleacher!

I'm curious, washing machines these days are pretty good at getting rid of excess water, but I wonder if a wringer would further aid extracting even more water out of clothes and speed up the drying time. As a user of both technologies , do you have any thoughts?

My hands use to get raw and from wringing out clothes my hands started having muscle problems. I went to a similar system. But I had and wash tub system with wringer. You are right they do get cleaner. The wash boat helps with spots/ stains. I think one take more care on detail for you are working closer to the material. I enjoyed doing laundry out side except winter and down pours. Miss that part. I swear the clothes smelled and held up better.

If you are going to use a washboard, you need to rub the board with a bar of soap first and them rub the clothes on the board. The shelf at the top of the board is there to hold the bar soap.

In Grandma's and Great-Grandma's time, this is what people (mostly women) did, in their own homes or working for other people, also ironed when they were all dry. Scrubbed and waxed floors by hand as well. My mother-in-law who is 96 grew up in some pretty tough times, swears today's folks don't know what hard work is.

My mother did laundry this way, or very similar. I'm about to start because I hate this computerizd piece of expensive junk that doesn't clean the clothes, stops, locks the lid, blinks all the time & can't handle over 7 lbs of clothes. I'm going back to the old way. Because of today's fabrics I can still dry them in a dryer and hang them without ironing but I do have an old fashioned clothes line in my backyard from the forties that we use to hang blankets and rugs on. Clothes do tend to be wrinkled when they are line dried but I can use it without electricity if I need to..I call it my solar powered clothes dryer.

All that hard work is probably why she's 96. The human body is meant to work, but the human mind despises work. The intelligence of humans is why we have modern fancy contraptions to "make life easier". Sure, they can make life easier, but at what cost? Laundry today is as simple as tossing clothes into a machine, tossing in some detergent, pressing a few buttons, then waiting. When done, pull out, toss into another machine, press some buttons, and wait. Some machines can wash and dry in the same machine so all you do is toss in clothes and detergent, press some buttons, then when you come back it's all done. Another problem though, I have noticed modern washing machines do NOT clean clothes very well at all. Take some "clean underwear" or "clean socks" and wash them in a sink by hand with soap and you will see just how dirty they still are.

If you wind up using a washboard, make sure you use a bar of soap to rub on the board first. The gentleman in this video just rubbed the clothes on the board with no soap. That does nothing to clean the clothes.

So much better than the JUNK washers that are manufactured now-days that have very little water in them & they are made to break-down a couple of years after they're purchased! I will have to add... the jeans still look very wet after being run through that wringer.

i used to use a wringer when I was a teen. best thing ever !!! i wish i had one today. people were stupid to get rid of them.

I have a small washboard in my bathroom for clothes that need a good scrub to get tough stains out. Very handy and useful, even today.

I love this catchy tune !!! 🎵🎵🎵🎵🎵 The pump went out of my washing machine and I'm trying to figure something out. I hang everything to dry except sheets, but I'm willing to try that too. I think this would probably work but... I'm probably going to have to go for one of those press type mop buckets to get the water out. This is a little too pricey for me. 😏

I just use my hands. Kung foo forearm grip, 1 Tupperwear container in my bathtub, agitation and soak for a couple hours poor out dirty water and repeat till water is clearer take out each thing one at a time and squeeze that water out with them mits, hang to dry. I grew up poor and learned in mexico when i would go to camp here in the U.S the other kids would laugh at me but i never ran out clean clothes and would take 2 of each essential for a weeks worth away.

If your unconfident in your squeeze no worries, just leave out to dry a little longer as long as u got a fan to move the air or its outside everything dries in time. Main thing is you dont want it dripping wet

Yeah, I like the workout 2. I was also thinking about letting them soak longer, thanks for the reminder. I just use hardware bucket.

The wringer looks interesting. Am using the bathtub. Several square plastic used and clean kitty litter containers. One pour kitty container for filling up with water and a bit more water cleaning pressure than just the faucet or flexible showerhead. I am single and almost daily keep up with my laundry. After my clothes, it is a kitchen or area rug or bathmat or towel to wash in one bucket and to help rinse, the other buckets. Currently, I use a plunger and have been for years but want to upgrade. A few months ago, I bought a Ninja spinner-water extractor. Does an excellent job pulling water out of thick, winter socks and towels!! In the summer, would take a few hours with a portable fan on about five hours. In the winters a real pain and expense to use a portable heater 750-1500W for several hours as I rotated the clothes and some clothes still painfully wringing. With the spinner, I initially do a first handwringing. Then I get them in the spinner. Getting much better at my learning curve to balance. Sometimes a wet mess but I am clumsy anyways and double any water mishaps I might have with a quick mopping anyways of the floors. Once it is balanced takes about 3-5 minutes to do an amazing job of about minimum of getting my clothes 90percent or better dried. On the hangers over the shower rod(would love to dry outside but in my apts not an option), and my clothes with a portable fan or heater completely dry in about one hour. I really do not need my portable fan or heater to dry. Seems when I check maybe three hours(?)later, my clothes are completely dry. .but my granny hands getting old with arthritis, and am thinking if my wash bucket can be changed to one of these metal buckets, that would be gentler and more effective of the first wringing after the rinse. Thank you for sharing your demonstration.

Yeah home' ain't got the muscle to tighten the wringer tension .He would be struggling to crank the wringer & the clamps would rip those cheap galvanized wash tubs .. Beside that he should have clamped both tubs together for with wooden spacer to keep them tubs from twisting

I've bought this. It's not cheap and it doesn't work. I've washed laundry by hand for three years. I've wrung it by hand, and via a mop wringer. The mop wringer does a much better job than this.

I use a 1917 Universal wringer, it works better than the modern ones and can be disassembled for maintenance.

And it looks lovely. No yards of bright pink plastic. Old fashioned classy tubs. I hope it’s available in Australia.

I use a glass wash board I have for over 40 years

I wish wringers were not so expensive, I've love one for my hand washing. If one in area with no electricity, this is the old way to keep things clean. Many do another step with boiling water after rinse to kill bacteria. Depends what kind of soil you are cleaning! Farm stuff can get right dirty.

If expense is an issue, you could always DIY with wood. It wont last as long as something like shown in this video, but it will get the job done. Think two rolling pins or wide wood dowels, some cheap hardware, and the structure to hold it all together. One pin free rolls, the other is under tension but can move up and down. The tighter the tension, the more it wrings, but also the harder it is to turn the crank and the harder it is "to get started". Could probably build one out of wood and hardware store stuff for around $20 depending mostly on the wood availability.

Why does this wringer cost $159?

Yep, it's easy doing hand washing as a demonstration, now try washing 10 loads.

If you have ten loads to do, either you have a LARGE family (we're talking a dozen or so people) or you put off doing laundry too long. I end up with a small load per week with just myself. Ten "average loads" would be about three months worth of laundry.

If I need to hand wash, I just put them in the tub with a bit of water and soap. let it soak for several minutes, pull the plug from the drain, stomp on them thoroughly when I shower, rinse at the same time, wring by hand and toss 'em up onto the spare spring loaded shower curtain rod to let them dry. Done!

lark6spur, you will go back in time when the electricity goes off for a long time and it will according to the experts. Our electrical grid is already overloaded and getting worse every year. Personally I'm getting the removable mop wringer.

I'm still confused on the extra spinning for cleanliness. I do believe you. Just trying to figure out how to do it. Thankfully I can watch this again in front of my washer and then that will help 😊

Hand wash is easy! Yeah sure thing when is only a few items.......PMSL! Try doing that all day with a complete full load of washing including bedding! See how much you feel it then! LOL! 😂

The wringer is all i need but i'd rather come up with another way.....though the one you have is good....i just dont have alot of space...I keep thinking i'll figure out a better/smaller diy way.

What’s occurred yo me- is ho ve used a washing machine, then gone for years to the (boring, dreaded ! ) gym. Using that plunger a few times will replace the stupid arm exercises at the gym. I’ve been realising this fir a long time actually. I got a job a few years ago where I was in cleaning a crew. Doing a few -not too many - strokes of a mop up snd duen a wall every few days abd the circular motions of washing benches, my arms and tummy firmed up real nice. And my general strength in day to day life really paid off too. So, I don’t have to slog real hard to get a replacement result for the gym.

Where do we buy the big tin wash bowls from in UK? What is a better name to call them?

Handwashing clothes is easy huh, tell that to my gr grandma who had 13 kids, 9 who survived, imagine all the laundry and diapers, not to mention hanging clothes outside in the winter, or in the attic to dry.....then there was another day just for ironing, lol.....

lena5669 my clothes come out cleaner doing them by hand than in the washing machine! I have a Maytag Centennial he washer and dryer! They are good but prefer to do by hand! I actually boil water and add Borax to the wash!

Grandma washed for 16 ppl...14 kids and Grandpa and herself...while running a boarding house for young female college students...AND helping Grandpa run a farm! When all their children were grown and gone, they had my cousin (6 or 7), I was just a toddler, they opened a fruit and vegetable stand ! Thank you, Lord, best time of my life!

There a few companies in the U.S. that still sell wringers. If you Google it, they will show up. Also Amazon has some for sale. A better plunger than the one in the video is the Breathing Mobile Washer, however, it is very hard to get hold of one because they are always selling out.

You don't put white clothes and dark jeans in the water at the same time.....that is how whites go dingy

this product is crap, from design to function. I tried running a bath towel thru the wringer, what a joke. I adjusted it with the knob on top in every position known to man, what is it suppose to do? This had to be made in China. CRAP. don't waste your money. Oh the metal table it sits on forget it, make your own. As far as the wringer goes, find a good antique shop, the old ones work.
