The latest episode of the World Soccer Talk Podcast is presented by Sling - sling-tv.pxf.io/c/330866/1575...
Rob Phillips is a commentator and reporter for the BBC Radio Wales, and the preeminent radio voice for soccer in Wales. With a 40-year plus career in journalism and broadcasting, Phillips has called many of Wrexham’s games this season as the club secured promotion back to the Football League. Phillips talks to World Soccer Talk about the historic season for Wrexham, the impact Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney have had on the club and the community and what the club’s outlook is for next season and beyond.
Phillips keys in on how Rob McElhenney & Ryan Reynolds have galvanized the community, other clubs that Rob and Ryan considered buying instead of Wrexham, what Rob & Ryan have done at Wrexham that Vincent Tan and the American hedge-fund owners were unable to do at Cardiff and Swansea, why Wrexham has been the perfect takeover, how many clubs have been promoted consecutively from the National League to League Two and to League One, the beauty of promotion and relegation, and whether Wrexham can make it all the way to the Premier League.

I'm a seventy-year-old guy from Chicago and I have been so intrigued with Wrexham that I buy a monthly ticket from the National League so that I can stream the matches.

@@markballard9942 it’s a work in progress funny thing Rob and Ryan’s astute back room boys are working on that very thing trying to convince the football powers in the EFL to introduce it. @@chrisbutcher5179 I'm aware of the work that Rob and Ryan did to trigger the streaming revolution in the National League. The big question is whether that influence will work with the EFL.

@@markballard9942 There influence over here is huge they have installed some very clever and innovative people to run their club, in particular Humphrey Ker Fleur Robinson and Shaun Harvey people leading the EFL into the 21st Century. Wouldn’t be surprised if all this is in place prior to the start of next season. Everyone over here want America to enjoy this truly global sport..
I’ve followed the whole Wrexham thing, the people of Wrexham are solid, decent working class, Rob an Ryan are sincere, humble and so genuine, well done everyone. Man U Salford
Hi from Washington, DC. After watching a few uploads about Wrexham, KZread dropped a podcast in my recommendations and now I’ve listened to eight hours of Ben Foster. I’m not even a sports fan in particular. He’s a very good interviewer and seems like a great guy (or as he would say, “a proper lad.”)

Ben Foster was not on my radar at all before he signed for Wrexham. However I now listen to his weekly podcasts and his GK Cycling channel on KZread. He is a great interviewer but he's also an engaging interviewee.

Great discussion, very exciting to see Wrexham FC progress on their journey. Up the town! 🏴
I'm from Northern Ireland and i can't wait to get a home shirt for next season lol
What is sad is that they have done more to invest into the community more than the current government. Ryan and robs only obligation was to the club, but they went above and Beyond

Mainly because the community is the base/foundation of the club. So of the community is improving, it will also help the club in the long run.

Besides giving thousands to charities like women's shelters, disability programs, and youth football initiatives, Rob and Ryan also quietly give 50 to 100 tickets away each game to those who it would be difficult for them to afford tickets. Even during the Notts County and Boreham Wood games. Think of the memories and good feelings that was given there. Then there's amazing disability section, that's one of the best in the world.

When the club is owned by the supporters, you have to take a different approach. They weren't going to give it away, only to end up in a mess again. The community is the club, and the club is the community. Unique is some ways and that's why it's been so appealing.

This is what happens when you have 20+ years of Labour rule in Wales and who's only priority is South Wales..
As it stands currently, based on Wrexham's average attendance this past season, they would be the 9th best attended club in League One. With the new stand they would move up to the 6th or 7th largest club in league one.

Great interview. Thank you.
Wrexham wasn’t chosen because they would be a good documentary topic. It was because of the financial state, the community, and opportunity for positive change.
Great interviewer. Great interview.
Enjoyed this. Thanks!
Good interview. You have a new subscriber in me. Suggestion that you don’t sit so stiffly on camera as that might out some viewers off. Lifelong Ajax (idolized Cryuff) and Chelsea fan, but I am not ashamed to say that I’ve hopped on the Wrexham bandwagon. Unfortunately won’t be able to see the Chelsea-Wrexham match live in Chaoek Hill this summer. 😢 I like the Canada - US dynamic in the North American fandom and tourists to Wrexham City. I think this adds to the allure. That Canadian expats now gather in Wrexham for reunions is super cool.
Yes indeed it is
good interview!
Absolutely. This team will take off. Enjoy world.
the pub owner must be the luckiest man right now
Rob Phillips may be mistaken about the new owner's wherewithal to finance Wrexham into the Championship and Premier Leagues. At least in so far as Ryan Reynolds. Rob McElhenney may be a "mere" multimillionaire with limited resources, but Ryan has turned out to be a marketing genius. His negotiating a significant participation percentage in Deadpool and pushing the movie into production was just the beginning. In a very short time he's taken significant positions in several companies and worked absolute magic in their marketing to increase their sales several fold. Wrexham AFC is just the most recent example of his marketing ability. Estimates of Ryan Reynolds' currrent net worth is now something north of USD$300 million. Not enough for the Premier League, but with some judicious financing and those advantageous partnerships which he's so good at creating, the two can probably get the club into the Championship League on their own. Personally I'm more interested in Reynolds' marketing schemes than I am with the club proper. It should be fascinating.
There was many thousands more than 15-20 thousand. My gosh. That was the estimate before the parade by the silly BBC. The parade stopped because there were many more than they anticipated. There was at least 30-40 thousand and maybe way higher. You can see the drone shots.

Soulless corporate entity. Not the same.
(Part 2) I only hope that either if two negative things don’t happen. That Wrexham international fandom fades as some new fad gets attention, or that the local community doesn’t come to resent hordes of foreigners hogging up all the space in the local pubs during match days.
Let's get this right from a person who lives in Wrexham and have had a season ticket for over 20 years. The economy has NOT been boosted by this. The town centre footfall on a Saturday afternoon is as low as what it has ever been. Most of the fans at the parade are spending their money in the likes of Chester or Broughton retail park NOT in the Town centre. Shops are dying on their knees due to the lack of business.

WXM fan for 60 years; lived in the town for 45 of them (my job/education took me away from the town periodically); I very rarely shopped in Chester and have never visited Broughton. The higher profile club putting the place on the map should generate some inward investment in the area don’t you think? Time for some degree of optimism? BTW, I really enjoyed this interview, quite a bit of sense spoken and good, searching questions. Thank you.

As a South Walian I’ve always supported the 4 top Welsh football clubs and Pontypool RFC all in equal measure. So pleased that Wrexham are back in the EFL fold. Never in my wildest dreams did I think out of the 4 they would be favourites to achieve Premiership status. Can’t see Cardiff’s Malaysian owner making it before them he’s lost interest so unlike Rob and Ryan could you ever imagine them insisting that Wrexhams changes there home kit colour to Blue . Vincent never got it R&R certainly do
