Hello, My name is Michael Holley, a UK citizen, I dived the SS Thistlegorm in March 1993 from the liveaboard Lady V, the wreck was first discovered and dived by Jacques Cousteau in !956 from his ship Calypso. He removed the ships bell, safe, telegraph and one Norton 500cc motorcycle, we stumbled across her purely by chance and were the first visitors since Cousteau. She was in pristine condition I remember the engineer's workshop in the prow of the ship completely undisturbed with rows of shelves containing nuts and bolts, spare parts, and tools, there were coils of rope neatly placed on the deck that would disintegrate if touched, In hold number one on the port side were rows and rows of motorbikes with their fuel tanks partially collapsed under the water pressure. They still had the tire pump and toolboxes, saddles, and mudguards, on the starboard side of the ship the were aircraft spares hundreds of racked 303, Le Enfiled riffles, rubber boots, and filed kitchen equipment. The bridge contained much of its equipment lying upright on the seabed, a stairway from the bridge led down to the captain's quarters, and his bunk, toilet, bath, and hand basin were still there in place, I could go on and on, after 30 years its still crisp in my mind and was without doubt the finest shipwreck of my 36 years of divining. My son dived it in 2010 to find the wreck pillaged and looted, after decades dive boats tired up the various parts of the wreck it is now close to collapse, so sad.

Fabulous explanation of the history, with excellent use of archival photographs, of locomotives, motorcycles and lorries (trucks). Best video of SS Thistlegorm. I hope to dive In October 2023, and very excited!

Hello, I got turned onto your channel from watching your piece on Divers Ready. I appreciate your efforts. My son and I will get the privilege of diving the Thistlegorm in July and a preview will help to ensure we understand what we are seeing on our dives. Wrecks to me are time capsules and this one is the perfect window into the violence that was WWII. I will enjoy digging through your extensive library.

But..over the years she's starting to collapse in places.. So be careful.. take only photos..leave only bubbles..and come back safe

If one or two bombs of this size hit the hold, there should be more destruction. Based on the integrity of the cargo being transported (in the 4th hold), I assume that the bombs were much lighter and the ship sank due to the explosion of part of the ammunition being transported
