Would you survive the bomb?- Nuclear War Precautions London- News Report (1980)

The 1980's saw the reemergence of nuclear war threats that had not been seen since the 1960's. For many politicians and military minds on both sides of the Iron Curtain nuclear war was seen as inevitable. In Britain it was the role for local councils to draft up emergency preparations in case of a nuclear attack on the UK. But the reality was, due to the hundreds of possible targets on our small and overcrowded island, nuclear war during the 1980's would've killed the majority of British people. Thankfully it did not occur.

it is just painful how little the British government cared for it own people. to force them to stay in an area hit by a multi-megaton weapon is really a death sentence for all involved.

In 1980 I was an air cadet. We regularly trained setting up road blocks with automatic weapons and even on rail lines. Why? To stop Barrowians leaving in war time. Insane times
