    I’ve never tried adding a plasticizer to my mortar. I bet I could string half that wall with plasticizer in my mud and that big ass “ox” of a trowel. Good work! I’m a North American American mason and am used to putting a lot more ties in the wall usually 400mm o/c every 600 mm high. Whats the code where you guys are?

    Shawn Blaskie . Hi Shawn across the pond . I’m not certain of the exact spacing for ties but I think it’s about every 450 mm horizontally and vertically . To be honest we weren’t expecting there to be no ties in the wall so had to make do with what we had on this occasion 😬. We’ve had so much stick about those dam ties so won’t make that mistake ever again ! 😬. Thanks for watching and commenting my friend 🧱👍🏼

    Your insurance company will ALWAYS get the low bidder to do work on a claim. Years ago owned a house at a T intersection, and averaged one car a year coming through the concrete barriers (even the huge 3600 lb ones) through our fence and into our yard. First time called our homeowner's insurance, and they dealt with the provincial auto insurance company. Now I had built that 200-foot fence (custom - no off the shelf replacements) and wanted it replaced right. Contractors arrive to fix the two damaged sections with cheap builder's supply pickets (originals were 1" thick custom shaped cedar). Stopped them, and said they'd have to make sure the replacement pickets matched the rest of the fence. Got a "Duh" from the mouth-breathers, and I asked if they were prepared to make it look as it was before the car crashed though it. "Duh." Luckily most of the pickets could be reused and I had a few extras that made up the shortfall. They still did a crap job, but it was alright as it was under some trees and not all that visible. Second car comes crashing through, and I call our homeowner's insurance again. The rep I talked to very kindly explained that it was entirely on the driver's insurance, and that all their insurer (yes, ICBC, I'm talking to you) was trying to do was fob off the costs of adjusting the claim onto the homeowner's insurance company, which would affect my rates. She recommended I deal with the auto insurer directly. So I did. Took photos of the damage (film camera, before digital), estimated costs of materials, my labour and submitted a claim along with the police report (drunk driver, and almost all of these incidents happened after the pub a few blocks away closed). Claim accepted, I did the repair the correct way. By the time car number nine came through the fence I had it down pat. I was billing $36/hour for my time, which included every second I was evaluating the damage, taking photos and driving to and from the photo place to have them developed, shopping for parts (which got expensive as I had to drive an hour each way to get the custom cedar material from the sawmill), all materials and whatever. I documented everything and, to my surprise, never had an issue with the car insurance company. I figured that I went to a great deal of effort to build that fence and I'd make sure it was done right. The city had been most co-operative throughout this ordeal, and had upgraded the concrete barricades to the big 3,600 lb no-post units (used as highway dividers) but they still found a way. So the take is that if your insurance company is recommending a contractor do your due diligence, as they just want to keep their costs down by hiring the cheapest shit for brains contractor they can.

    So many construction tasks, like framing and drywall taping, have been dumbed down to the point where you can train anyone to do them in a short time. But brick laying, plastering, and even ceramic tiling just leave a permanent mess without skill and commitment. Builders should either get people who can do these things right, or just use systems like cement-board-stucco and Novabrick that don't require as much skill.

    Well, what happens if water gets on to the brick tie that you put in grading from the brick downwards into the block, could that create water ingress from outer leaf to inner? I certainly think so, armature move for guys that do a really good job, tut tut!

  • @brando6BL

    @brando6BL

    I was just about to add that comment. The correct method would be to insert the tie one course earlier and build up to it or, perhaps, remove the laid brick and secure the tie horizontally then replace the brick. Driving rain will penetrate a single skin and the tie will track moisture into the internal wall. Duh. Otherwise the work is first class.

    Bit of picking going on here boys. I can’t see much wrong here, as for the ties? Well I can understand why people may question that they slope the wrong wrong way (standard practice), but honestly how much water is going to penetrate 16 odd courses with a window and roof above it. It would be a different story on a two storey gable in the weather. Can you give me the name of the ties please. Keep up the good work, light years better than what was there when started for sure! Why put a 4" damp down and then flash over it with a tray? The tray would have been enough on it's own. It should also have been jointed into a bed in the blockwork and not pinned on. This can let moisture down the back and can tear easy during construction. Also not enough wall ties. 450 vertical, 700 horizontal. What you did install, you bent up allowing water to run straight to the inner leaf. The brickwork was neat enough though.
