Would you give Nigel Farage £1.5m? | EP 1

Richard Osman and Marina Hyde welcome you to the first episode of The Rest Is Entertainment. Each week they'll explore the world of television, film, books and celebrity gossip.
First up for discussion, is Nigel Farage a good booking for I'm a Celebrity? And will a stint in the jungle help his PR?
Why did Jeff Bezos agree to an excruciating interview and photoshoot along with his fiance Lauren Sánchez in American Vogue?
And Richard explains why he loves the new Netflix game show version of Squid Game, while Marina takes a rather different view.

I love listening to Richard dropping knowledge on the TV industry, this is going to be a great podcast. Also, Slow Horses is returning this week. It's a show that if it was on BBC it would be the next Line of Duty or Happy Valley. Have you seen it?

I think I saw a bit of one like it and then because it's not on the BBC, not seen it again. But then Anita was like that, s1 on the beeb and then s2 was on some sky channel, which I have, but may dump sky as tbh everything seems to be on streaming channel and not much on sky.

I really like you guys (you both are really smart)putting a positive spin on things good work. Happy new year. Hope there will be a lot more 👍🇨🇦🇺🇦✌️

I’m watching a Podcast about a TV show I have never watched and no longer even have the means to watch because I got rid of my telly a couple of years ago. I’m watching it because Richard and Marina are two people who know how to talk in depth about something and make it interesting and informative. An unusual concept these days.

In gameshows, starting with participant interviews, it shows a lack of confidence in the game. First show the game, and if the participants are exceptional, only then will the audience care about their background. Really it's true of any drama, any storytelling. First get the story straight, then go into setting, then go into characters, then go into plot.

I don't understand why netflix didn't either do a season 2 of squid game with the original showrunner or a kond of spin off system where each season is squid game on a dofferent country - so you do a European squid game in France or England or whatever then next seasons in South America etc etc instead of doing basically what Mr Beast did with the concept years ago at this point, very sideways move.

I honestly think Farage isn't trying to stand out, he's trying to blend in. Populism appeals to the working class, the more he's shunned and upstaged by others (more celebrity types), I think his popularity will grow with a larger public base. It will feed into the 'media establishment vs working/patriotic people' narrative. Much of the (albeit limited) discussion I've seen online is along the lines of 'he's not as bad as I thought, he's alright'. Which I have to imagine is, at least a part, of his goal. Hancock made the mistake of trying to get people to like him, so they didn't. People will appreciate Nigel as being more of a 'bloke' and less concerned with being liked. They'll appreciate the unapologetic honesty, as opposed to feeling pandered or appealed to. Just consider the fact that he ISN'T being picked for these challenges when you'd imagine there would be public sentiment for it, like with Hancock. I'm a Celeb has always seemed to be a show about picking your targets, a level of timidness can be rewarded. While I do agree, that this may all backfire and push him further into obscurity, it will also mellow his public image and I can definitely people growing in sympathy for him - which I find hard to believe isn't a goal of his.

I think you're right and wrong in what you pin down to his populist style. Populism is about appealing to an inferiority complex, that much is true. But it's also about attempting to achieve an authentic image of strength. If his goal is to blend in, he's failing. People self-mythologise. The goal of a populist is to allow people that luxury, while appealing to all of them simultaneously. Farage being a boring crusty old fucker isn't blending in - it's standing out in how bland he is. He's charismatic for a politician. For a regular person, he's a complete charisma vacuum.

I've been listening to these in reverse chronological order after finding the videos in my recommended page and this is by far the worst episode, I'm glad they've steered more away from politics and more on how show business works. Farage DEFINITELY got the airtime he wanted, seeding little truths about the European Parliament and his personal politics to the ITV audience. Not only that, but every time he had an argument with Nella Rose she always, always came out looking like a complete fool and just bolstered Nigel all that much more. As much as Richard and Marina hate it, people did find Farage interesting.
