    Its cool to see the early stages of high powered electric vehicles go mainstream. I remember back in the days of RC car racing, first was nitro powered cars, no one wanted to touch the brushed electric cars running on NiMH batteries because run time was short, motor maintenance was high. Then came along brushless motors and controllers, then lithium batteries and the game changed forever, no one was really interested in the messy, high maintenance, nitro powered stuff anymore.

I love my nitro cars but 2 strokes are my favorite right now. I enjoy brushes lithium powered cars but the added sound and smells that come with gas burners make up for the performance loss to me personally.

    I've been playing with electric motors for quite a few years now and I just love them. Yea, I still love a naturally aspirated gas engine sound and all that, but the torque you instantly have from an electric motor is just insane. ATM I'm converting a Honda Trail 70 into electric with a 10kw electric motor. Eventually someday I want to build a 4 wheel independent emotor sand rail or something like it like maybe a dune buggy or something like this UTV here. I've been addicted to electric motors since yrs back when I put a 1400w hub motor on a mountain bike and got it to 44mph in a few seconds. I was hooked. And a bit scared also. That crazy torque takes a bit getting used to. But that's when it's the most fun, right?

    Indeed, my only 1st impression 'criticism' is that heavy batts should be as near the ground as possible, these are mounted high. Always trade offs however, especially doing mods, apparently no better options. Always room for improvement, batts mounted high and to the rear *probably* make it wheely too easily, be faster still if u didn't have to back off to keep front down.

    I’ve been saying for years that electric Rzr’s are the future. How cool would a silent Rzr be on the Moab slick rock country? Magical! With the slow speeds I bet 60-100 mile range would be no problem, which would be all the trails you could ride in a day.

  • @DJtheDad

    @DJtheDad

    2 жыл бұрын

    Lower gear = slower speeds = same or more motor RPM as when you're wheelin' the open terrain. So rock crawlin' would prob be even less mileage. But crawlin', you could prob pack in a few more batteries. Don't forget the genny! Now if they could make ultra clean, ultra efficient generators....this could really mean something for all sides of the climate debate (especially the ones who like to have fun).

  • @Okkebeltman

    @Okkebeltman

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@DJtheDad For electric cars the major part of what costs energy is the winddrag. On dirt trails electric cars can get crazy extra range. They are way more efficient if you keep below 20 miles/h. Since unlike gaspowered they dont have to idle. And for every bit going back down a road it will recharge batteries again, so most of the climbing and going bac down will balance out. sanddunes is a different story since you will have more drag, so more lost energy.

    That would add more weight and make a negligible difference to the range. The only good that it might do is help it recharge a little when it was trailered, but with a tiny panel that would fit on this thing's roof, it would take forever to charge up with only the solar panel. The added weight of the panel and whatever is required to connect it to the battery and start charging would not be worth it even if it added almost no weight.

    For recreational stuff like this I think battery packs like an RC car will be the first step. Some of the Chinese EVs are taking that approach already where instead of gas stations you have battery stations and they exchange the empty battery pack for a charged one. Rentals would be a good starting point since they could handle the battery changes between runs and have enough battery packs for a full business day.
