Fun fact: when setting that speed record, the SR-71 suffered a flame out in one of its engines. Pilots chose not to abort and gunned it anyway. Which means the fastest (declassified ) recorded speed of an SR-71 was set with one engine.

@@dominicarps715 aviation geek club article. "To set the Absolute Speed record, Joersz and Morgan, flying in Blackbird 958, had to cross the electronic timing gate, travel the twenty-five kilometer course, cross a second timing gate, turn around, and repeat the course from the opposite end to negate the effect of winds. The crew had an unstart-Blackbird-speak for an engine shutdown-just after crossing the timing gate on the second leg while flying at a speed of Mach 3.3. “On an unstart, the aircraft yaws and the nose pitches up,” Joersz noted. “There is a five-step checklist to get the engine relit. I knew I had to keep the nose down to stay in the 150-foot box, so that’s what I concentrated on. By the time we’d gone through the checklist, we’d already passed the second gate. Still, we exited the gate at Mach 3.2.” Keep in mind this is one of the few SACTIONED airspeed records. Meaning this is what Guiness would go by. Declassified FOI documentation shows Mach 3.4, 3.43, 3.5 and 3.48 records for separate high-speed runs.

The Blackbird didn't refuel after launch due to a foreshortened fuel load. It refueled due to an intentional designed leak. Titanium, like all metals, expands as it heats up. The problem is that it would have expanded to the point of causing catastrophic failure of the fuselage. Therefore, Kelly Johnson's Skunk Works designed the fuselage with loose-fitting panels and seams which would leak on the ground, then expand and seal those leaks once the aircraft reached its inflight operating temperature. THAT'S why they needed to refuel after launch.

To this day I call shenanigans on that reported top speed of 3.2. It went faster. My favorite sr-71 story is when one had engine troubles over France, and of course it was not a publicly known flight so when he dropped altitude and slowed down he was intercepted by something the french had at the time, like mach 1. something so thats pretty much anything. they told the blackbird pilot that if he did not identify himself he would be shot down for violating their airspace. In the meantime he had sorted out his engine troubles, so he flipped them off and punched it. He was already out of France's airspace before they could do anything about it. classic.

1:43 I don't believe it was due to added weight. Rather, because of the intense heat the SR-71 was exposed to, the design had to compensate for the expansion the titanium airframe experiences during supersonic, high altitude. As a result, when the 71 was on the ground, it leaked fuel like a stuck pig. So the SOP was to fill it up last, at which point the 71 immediately took off. Even though they wasted no time in getting it off the ground, they still lost a lot of a fuel due to the gaps in the frame. Once the 71 got to speed and the airframe warmed up to the point that the airframe no longer had gaps in it, the 71 would rendezvous with a tanker to be fueled properly, at which point, it would finally proceed to its mission. So... SR-71 pilots literally took off with a giant hole in their gas tank.

You did miss one thing if I’m not wrong, either that or an inaccuracy but I digress. The Sr-71 was built with a full body fuel tank in order to give as much space for fuel as the maximum weight could accommodate. When being built Lockheed Martin didn’t want to waste weight or space on fuel tanks so they gave the Blackbird a full-body fuel tank if that’s what it’s called, and that’s where the expansion of titanium plays into that. Don’t quote me on too much of this as I may be wrong, but if I end up being right then applause to me

And then how the US freaked out when they saw the Mig-25 and thought it was a super fighter, then build the absolute death machine that is the F-15 to counter it. I've been to airshows where there were legacy flights, showing an f22 fly side by side with the p51 mustang. I'd love to see the f22 be a total fanboy with the p51 while bragging about all the new bells and whistles it has, only for the p51 to say "I still shot down more pilots than you, even without the new toys you have."

The SR-71 may have been decommissioned and, with radar/technology improvements doesn’t need to be used anymore, still holds a special place in history as one of the sexiest aircraft.

The SU-57 is the stealthiest plane on this planet, its so stealth it hasn't been seen in the Ukraine.

I would love to see Russian weapons just go on 'tv' and while talking about how great they are blink in Morse code for 'save me please I can't do anything or they throw me in gulag'

The reason blackbird took off low on fuel is it was designed to leak fuel. The expansion rate of the titanium is too great so they made the tanks purposefully leaky. Once airborne as the friction heated up the skin of the aircraft it would seal up the tanks. Sealants were tried but would all ultimately fail. The reduced fuel loadout for TO was more to keep the abort weight low incase an engine flamed out. It reduced stress on the brakes, tires and landing assembly.

While a love a good Russia bashing as much as the next guy, i do love when he is able to fire back a good point or two. Keeps things fresh.

Everyone on my Dad's side of the family worked for Skunkworks in 60s-90s. Seeing this is absolutely *glorious*. I'd love to see something for the F117A if you ever get the time. Thanks for picking the SR-71 (and the fun fact of how we tricked Russia in to giving us buttloads of high-grade titanium, which a member of family said was a total, complete, and absolute B-word to machine till they got the hang of it)!

The best part of the SR-71 was what it called "evasive maneuvers." Any time someone fired a missile at them, they'd just floor the accelerator and outrun it.

I LOVED this, thank you. SR-71 is a beast. Would have loved an interaction with the F-22 about 'supercruise' and that the Blackbird had *better* efficiency at Mach 3 than at lower speeds

Reduced visibility? When one of our radars detects a su-57, we’re gonna think the Russians recreated the flying aircraft carrier from the avengers. The su-57 has exposed rivets and screws lmao. Reduced visibility more like enhanced visibility.
