Left after OGL and never looked back. Owned a lot of books that could be shared. Basically looked. to other systems like Pathfinder 2e, ShadowDark, Dragonbane, etc... Only 5e stuff I get are from kickstarter and not official D&D. Started D&D back in the early 80's Satanic Panic, and had to buy C64 games like Pools of Radiance, Champions of krynn, etc.. due to parents freakout.

Lots of people who lack critical thinking were fooled by the TTRPG KZreadrs who lied about the new OGL. The zeitgeist that controlled the minds of the community was something to behold, even though all of the actual facts were right there the whole time, and they were completely born out in the end. But it turns out the TTPRG community has the same critical thinking and integrity as the average QAnon rally.

I'm canceling my DDB subscription at the end of this month - the choices and business practices that Hasbro/WotC have done since the OGL issue has made me decide to vote with my dollars and sever my relationship with them. I have spent the last few months moving everything into Foundry VTT with supporting documents (PDFs) for my players. Because of this I have been able to add 9 new classes, tons of new subclasses, feats, backgrounds, spells, equipment, etc. all from third party vendors (like Kobold Press, MCDM, etc.). It has been (and still is) a lot of work but in the end I will be free of Hasbro/WotC and able to control exactly what is in my campaign's and how everything will work. Very exciting!

Shittification is happening all over. I spent the same amount of money but nothing in hasbro/wotc pockets since the OGL fiasco. I have never had a paid subscription to D&D Beyond. I do have an account, but I made my own character generator Excel spreadsheet, though it is not perfect it works & has taught me a lot about the rules by building it myself. *** Rules that many players do not realize involve ability-checks/skills & features of classes/subclasses that enhance those are for example the Bard's "Jack of All Trades" which gives half-proficiency rounded-down to all ability-checks/skills the character is not proficient in, the Champion's "Remarkable Athlete" is similar except limited to STR, DEX & CON ability-checks/skills giving half-proficiency BUT "ROUNDED-UP". Both of these features also apply to Initiative because it is an DEX ability-check. The rounding-up benefit also affects Artificers when they multiclass unlike other classes which round-down as per the "default" rule. *** These are not earth-shattering power-ups but they do impact the feel of these classes/subclasses & it is good to be aware of what the rules actually say vs. what many people guess they say.

Hasbro has shown its run by the Cult of MBAs, they are just looking at columns of numbers and not seeing the effect on end users. The big $$$ is in getting Subscriptions (I blame Adobe for the spread of $ub$cription cash in). the OGL stuff has kind of a blessing as its given rise to a ton of other options: Knave, Tales of the Valiant, Dagger Heart, MCDM RPG, Bob's Delve, or the Dungeon Dudes Dungeons of Drakkenheim. Theres a ton of ways to jump off the WOTC train and most of them are supported on Roll 20 and other VTTs. Or play Pathfinder 1 or 2. Or jump to totally different systems like Savage Worlds, any of the Modiphius games: Fallout, Dune, Star Trek, Mork Borg etc. SO many options.

I pay for D&D Beyond but it's something I've always assumed would go poof when WotC decided it wanted to blow it up. It's basically a digital convenience I rent access to, reflecting the fact that my gaming is, now and likely for the future, mostly digital. Could I play without it? Sure. Did for years and years and I still do for the heavily house ruled 2E game I'm running. But it's a lot easier for us; we have more money than time now. I suggest folks think of it that way. That may mean you decide for yourself to bail on DDB. I agree about the individual purchase option, though. I used it a lot. Great content and feel better!

This is why my go-to game is still Star Wars. And I’m not talking about the absurd version put out by Fantasy Flight Games nor the d20 version put out by WotC. No, I’m talking about the original ancient d6 variety published by West End Games. Still the best TTRPG I’ve ever played. As for WotC and Habro limiting the creation of new home brew stuff but leaving the existing creations alone, bear in mind the words of my former drill sergeant… “The will to be stupid is a VERY powerful force.” In other words, expect the worst.

This was the last straw for me. I've found other games I like running better a while ago, but 5e was still the easiest to recruit players for. Then OGL happened right after my group pitched in for the Dragonlance book and board game, so I was committed to running that, but decided it would be my last 5e game. But then they backed off and I felt okay getting another year of DDB just to finish out this game. This new pricing change shows that they learned nothing and can't be trusted. I have so many other books on my shelf that I haven't been able to run yet, so I'll be okay. Also, the only way this makes sense to me is that they're going to roll out a subscription for book access. $7/mo for every book as long as your account is active, or something like that. Piecemeal purchases would undermine that. People have wanted it for a long time, but I also don't trust WotC to not eventually phase out purchased content as an option altogether.

For me personally, I look to other games like Dragonbane, Mork Borg, Shadowdark, etc. We're too spoiled for choice for me to care about if something is official D&D these days. Plus, I prefer physical books over digital, so Beyond was never really for me. If I wanted to play 5E, I would just buy the PHB and Monster Manual and whatever other books piqued my interest. I don't think 5E is that fun to DM though, and I'm my group's DM. I get the draw to the fun character builds, but BG3 can deliver a lot in that department.

Refused to buy anything D&D related starting with the OGL, especially after the Spelljammer content really left a sour taste in my mouth. Dragonlance was kind of the first post-OGL content I looked at, and as someone who was introduced into the fantasy genre by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman's Dragonlance novels growing up, it had been such a massive disappointment that I was ultimately glad I never purchased the 5e Dragonlance adventure. Honestly, it might've broken me on a fundamental level had I paid for that only to be backhanded so hard. I continued to run D&D up until my Strahd Campaign went on hiatus, and later termination, due to one of the players (small party) having severe, prolonged medical issues. I had been considering trying to maybe be a player again and apply for a 5e posting online or whatever, but with this most recent misguided cashgrab they pulled with dndbeyond, I'm pretty sure the only way that I will ever touch D&D branded content again is if I'm adapting it for homebrew use in Pathfinder, or if a close friend of mine wants to run a game and is unable to choose an alternate system for whatever reason.

I was thinking about using DNDB when the next edition came out. I didn’t for fifth bc I had already bought physical books and refused to buy twice. But with the a la cart option, I figured with a new edition, it’s a good idea. Not now. Enough websites “review” the rules that you don’t really have to buy. I would buy physical books and use the web for speed or to not bring a ton of books places. But there was never a point when I would buy a campaign book for a new race, not will I start now.

The fact that Hasbro has declared that they want to primarily become a digital content creator that ALSO sells toys signifies to me that they could care less about ttrpgs -- they already killed their deal with Random House for publishing physical stuff and their trend seems to me to be to minimize physical products ( which have been increasingly lacklustre). They want the future to be 100% digital, using their VTT and other tools, and basically use the weight and marketing value of the Dungeons &Dragons name to channel money into a totally different social and consumer activity. More and more I'm supporting independent ttrpg creators and content creators because of this and have reverted back to older editions of D&D with house rule modifications gleaned from later editions. Don’t make the assumption that Wizards and Hasbro are different entities- in practical terms, they are not If I remember correctly, the head of digital sales has openly said that his mission statement is to gut DnD Beyond in favor of whatever corporate micro transactions mojo he has in mind… They only slowed their plan due to the OGL fiasco; they cut 5E loose and are only bringing out this 2024 version to satisfy contractual obligations from when they acquired DnDB. 2025/26 will see a new “forever” edition behind a paywall, with all of DnDB fully integrated into it.

Definitely agree about it being a dumb financial decision. Before, they had a whole microtransaction thing going, which can end up leading to more overall profit for them in the long run. Sure, that whole scheme can be manipulative and subtle, but it'd end up with them overall selling more while keeping the community's perception of them (OGL debacle notwithstanding) positive overall. But no, they'd rather get rid of that to sell the whole books and piss off the entire community. Definitely gonna be checking out PF2e and TotV now, because goddamn, WotC and Hasbro are being greedy assholes.

Sick AND 30?! Don't sweat your 30th - you've never looked better! Gotta agree with all of this... the DnD Beyond subscription is almost useless at this point, but, I'm sure, like me, you've spend so much money there already that I'll need to keep that account forever. What am I supposed to do - NOT have access to the Curse of Strahd campaign and the ability to pull all that content into FoundryVTT?! Insanity!

Same here, I ditched D&DBeyond last year because of the OGL. Which is a shame, I loved their character creator, and I haven’t found a character creator that I like. :) But I’m not going to support Hasbro ever again! (And they can ask Sony how long a grudge I can keep, I still haven’t forgiven them for the Sony Rootkit Scandal, when they ruined my pc)

like you I dropped Hasbro last year. Doing so broke my blinders off and now I have been surfing over all the 3rd party games like Shadowdark or deathbringer. I even purchased tales of the valiant kickstarter and now I read it and will probly never play it.

I'm so fucking tired of corporate greed. What aren't they getting about the average fan/player not wanting to or being able to spend *that* much on their hobbies?! How long can we all exist in late-stage capitalism? I left ddb as soon as I could after the OGL debacle. I did go back at the lowest paid tier because I can't not make all of the characters in my head. I used the a la carte option *so* many times. And I'm never going to buy a whole digital manual from them.

@@JacksonOwex Easy, just don't buy a D&D product. DriveThruRPG is full of great games. I still buy physical books when I can. But my money goes to System Matters, Uhrwerk and Pegasus (all German publishers). I never even played 5e and have left DnD after AD&D 2. Never looked back.

Once a game starts nickel and diming gamers, I’m out. I bought the D&D books but I stopped using D&D beyond as soon as I saw they were going to make me buy the electronic versions of the physical books I already bought. They’ve just turned me off with the greed.

"Welcome to Domino's. How can I help?" "I'd like a large Pepperoni. I'll share it out amongst my family." "I'm sorry. Domino's pizzas are undermonetised. You and all your family will have to buy their own large pizza." WOTC & Hasbro have zero idea who their customers are. I use 5e but have never used D&D Beyond. Amazon and Adobe ruined my trust of subscriptions. You never own anything. It's a rip off. Screw WOTC/Hasbro. Go OSR, RuneQuest, Symbaroum, or Dragonbane. There's no law saying you can't use these rules in FR, Eberron, or any other proprietary world.

I'll say it again here, but if they would have done the reverse, everyone would be griping about micro transactions and saying they are trying to nickel and dime us... The fact is that this isn't worse than any other marketplace. So at worst, they are equal to everyone else. And there are probably some reasons behind it that could be technical as far as trying to manage the new ruleset, between having to manage individual purchase of 2014 battle master and 2024 battle master, etc. I think you are blowing it all out of proportion. Now if they start messing up with sharing or homebrewing, then I would have issues with that...
