5 Broken Magic Items in D&D

Ойындар

Today I give you my list of 5 broken magic items in D&D. 5e is absolutely filled with magic items, but more than a few of them have the capabilities of upsetting the entire balance of the game. Do you agree with my list?

Grognard here. The Immovable Rod was used back in the day to get around or solve traps and puzzles. One solution to its problematic aspects is to make it so it can't leave the dungeon.

For the horn: as soon as the first fight is over the berserkers immediately demand mead and food - if it's not given they either leave early or attack the party. "Balance"

@@misfitadventurers Berserkers are a lot tougher in 5e. 67 HP is insane. IF that's what it summons--yeah, this is a broken item. On average, in 1st and 2nd edition, when this item was created, berserkers had 2-7 HP and a +2 to hit as 1st level fighters. They can be very deadly in large groups and are a great challenge for low level parties. 1st and 2nd edition Horn of Valhalla summons: Silver--2D4+2 (4-10) 2nd level fighters Brass--2D4+1 (3-9) 3rd level fighters Bronze--2D4 4th (2-8) level fighters Iron---D4+1 (2-5) 5th level fighters With standard feats and abilities. When you think about this and what fighters can do, this is still nothing to sneeze at. And I like the demand for being feasted after the battle--it fits with the lore behind an item like this. Gonna start using that if I ever award this item. As far as an immovable rod vs a ship? Depending on the ship, if it's a cog, caravel or carrak, you are talking about a type of transportation that has tons of displacement---no. I'd have the rod just break. I don't award many magic items. I have a 4th level party and they only have 2 magic items. A cross bow of speed and +2 chain mail. It's turned out really well, because players have to research monsters for vulnerabilities--say you have a type of undead that can only be effected by bronze weapons or wrought iron weapons instead of steel, or using all the tropes for hunting vampires instead of your +2 magic sword.

I have a love/hate relationship with the Bag of Holding. I as a player love it, because I care about encumberance. I as a DM hate it because my players dont care about encumberance and just uses it as a way to handwave their inventory. However... The group I am part of has gotten our grubby little hands on a portable hole.. I dont want to be near when the bomb goes off :P

There are a few things I wanted to mention, because I believe it will help your channel grow. I love D&D content and it's always nice to have more people putting content out in the community! 1. Cut out the pauses you have while talking. 2. Read from a script rather than an outline (I'm assuming that's what happened here and is why you paused a lot). 3. Put Timestamps in the description for easy navigation. Maybe don't explicitly write "Bag of Holding," but instead write "Item #2" or something like that. 4. Practice talking in front of the camera more, even if you aren't recording. The more comfortable you are with it, the less nervous you'll be. 5. Find a niche in D&D content that you can do better than anyone else. I see a large array of videos on your channel ranging from skits, to lists, to GM advice, to live plays. It will help you grow as a creator if you focus on something that is a more specific subject within D&D that you are passionate about. I can tell you love D&D, and I want to see this channel grow! As an aside, I think most magic items aren't actually balanced against their rarities. I don't believe it is part of the rules, but I use Item Rarity to decide which items are indestructible compared to others. Magic Items that are Rare cannot be destroyed by Rare, Uncommon, or Common Magic Items. Magic Items can't be destroyed by mundane items unless specified otherwise. I like to think of it in this way, because Artifacts are indestructible unless you use very specific means, such as throwing a ring into a volcano, and they are at the top of the rarity tierlist.

Personally I don't see those problem - pauses are natural, not reading from/improvising a script is too - it the person feel relatable. I appreciate you have an opinion but I don't think it's as universal as perhaps you think.

Ignoring stuff that makes no sense at its rarity (Uncommon Ring of Warmth and Boots of the Winterlands being flatly better than the Ring of Cold Resistance), Instrument of the Bards is probably the most broken I've run into. Seven free spells per day, and even the uncommon ones give great spells that are worth casting most days. Maybe my players are just resource hoarders, but the week-long wait for the horn of valhalla makes them hesitant to use it unless things are truly dire.

I think the Horn(s) of Valhalla had alignment requirements/restrictions in earlier editions.

Class restrictions, too. The versions from AD&D are much more reasonable about how long the berzerkers are there, who can use the horns and whether you'll get beat up by the summoned berzerkers for being the wrong type of user. 😁

in one of my frostmaiden campaigns a player wanted boots of flying but instead found a cloak of the bat, not quite as useful but not as "broken". In my current Drakkenheim campaign the party found an immovable rod early on but it hasn't become an problem - yet.

The Ren Faire in Tennessee is really special because of the man who owns the castle nearby! I live close enough that I get to visit almost every year, and it's always a blast. The castle is my favorite part about it, but all the people working there are always lovely. What's your favorite event there? Mine has to be the jousting tournament.

Your idea of broken is very different from mine. The _Robe of Useful Items_ is a great item to give a low level party, sure there are a bunch of useful things on it (thus the name) but a lot of them are only useful in specific situations (e.g. a rowboat isn't going to do you much good in a typical dungeon). And they are all one use items, once you've used the rowboat patch it's gone. The _Bag-of-Holding_ / _Portable Hole_ combination is a potential to cause issues, but it also destroys two magic items (and anything that's in them). And you can't use it to plane shift in a practical manner since it opens a gate to a random location on the Astral Plane. The _Immovable Rod_ is another item that is only useful is specific situations, and in a lot of those situations you will lose the rod. Use it to stop a ship and it might cause a little bit of damage before it's deactivated, 8 thousand pounds isn't a lot when you're talking about a ship -- even a small ship like the Santa Maria weighs over 300,000 pounds), but not a lot. It would be very useful as an anchor for a small boat, but I don't see that being game breaking. And to use them as a ladder, you'd need more than two. A _Horn of Valhalla_ is a lot less "game breaking" then pretty much any summoning spell. Berserkers are only CR 2 which means they'd only be really useful in a low level campaign. Plus it's only useable once every seven days, where multiple summoning spells can be cast per day. _Sovereign Glue,_ Again, another item that is only useful in specific situations. And remember, it might stick two objects together but it doesn't make those objects unbreakable. In your example, all someone would have to do to get at the McGuffin would be to break the box apart. That aside, it sounds like your players used the glue in exactly the way it was designed to be used and not in any way that was game breaking. Overcoming a DM challenge in an unexpected way is the soul of D&D. As for game breaking items, start with a _Ring of Wishes,_ a _Deck of Many Things,_ _Baba Yaga's Mortar And Pestle._ You're worried about a _Bag of Holding_ making planer travel too easy, it's got nothing on an _Amulet Of The Planes._ And you think a few Berserkers is too much, a _Wand Of Orcus_ allows the conjuring a 500 hit points worth of Undead that remain until dawn (among other functions) and you can use it once a day.

The thing that makes the Horn of Valhalla super powerful isn't necessarily the CR of an individual berserker, but the sheer number of CR 2 berserkers that you can summon with one. The fact that a brass one can potentially summon 14 of them absolutely demolishes boss fights just from an action economy perspective alone, even at higher tiers of play.

I dont have a problem with a person gaining a lvl over the rest of the party in milestone. id just have them not lvl up when the party reach the next milestone. they get to lvl early but not stay ahead for the rest of the campaign.

My party managed to find the Iron Flask. It was empty. In the same treasure they found a book that led them into the Price of Beauty quest from Candlekeep mysteries. (Spoilers) When they enter the spa they are greeted by a man who introduces the players to the amenities of the spa. My paladin used divine sense on him. He is a Cambion in disguise. He used the flask on the Cambion, sucking him in. He then released the fiend because it will now be an ally for an hour. The denizens of the spa however were alerted that something was wrong, so what proceeded was a full on assault of the building. What was planned to be a series of fun spa like activities turned into a murderhobo run. Still a lot of fun tho.

Flight is not the big deal a lot of people make it out to be; most anything a PC with flight can accomplish, so too can a low level Druid. The Druids I've run for have convinced me of that.

The Horn of Valhalla sounds like it has to end up in my game, since one of my players is a Paladin of Thor. Maybe I’ll just hornbrew something more single-use or less powerful. The Flare of Valhalla or something

If you break down the deck of many things mathematically if I remember correctly it's actually 90% beneficial and only 10% detrimental The deck of many things is way less broken and underpowered for what people give it credit for. I have a DM that has three decks of many in every campaign that we have ever played for the past 15 plus years and it has never once broken the game.

i really don't like the use of the word broken when talking about rpgs. I feel like most people really mean "fairly powerful" when saying broken. None of these items listed are broken. they are fun. And whether an item is listed as uncommon or rare or whatever doesnt really matter. you're the dm. you decide how rare any item in game is. and if you think an item is "broken", just dont give it to your party. and sorry, glue CANT break a campaign. you're being a bit dramatic there. none of this stuff is game breaking, whatever that means. (i really feel like it doesnt mean anything)
