This is a good comparison. I'm glad someone did it, b/c a lot of Canon shooters are going to be wondering about this. That said, I used the RF 85mm f/1.2 a few months back and it is an incredible lens. It's "special" in a way that you're better off not even knowing about if you don't have the cash to buy it.

So the RF 85mm f/1.2 is the dream lens but until then, the RF 85mm f/2.0 is a SOLID DEAL. Where else can you get incredible bokeh, macro capabilities, and that 85mm compression? And with the R systems you can even crop in, to get even a tighter 136mm which is insane. I just picked up the f/2 and this lens goes CRAZY with the EOS RP! Saving up for the R5 and 85mm f/1.2 !

If you don't want to make sacrifices to buy the f1.2, don't ever try one. Its magic is extremely addictive in person. First try, I spent 15 minutes with it doing a professional head shot for my daughter. Even just doing a head shot, the lens hooked me. It's the opiate of lenses.

If you just comparing image-quality - jes. But there are other sacrifices to name. More expensive, bigger, havier (dont want to carry that around all day) witch makes it alot less effective in everyday situations. Not taking such an expensive lense on vacation.. so it depends what you're doing.

Great comparison!! Straight to the point and showing the important characteristics. I don't have them but the 85mm EF 1.4L IS. I had the EF 85mm 1.2 L II and I compared the two at f2 and f3.5 as well to see if the bokeh would differ or not on the same aperture. Yes it does differ!! A lens with a wider aperture will have more bokeh at least at the wider apertures - that's´physics. An L-lens will last much longer and can take tougher handling and rain/water before it gets damaged. On this comparison and it's also my experience with all of them that I have used which is that they have clearer colors and rendition. Its obvious on her skin. I still think the 85mm f2.0 is a fantastic deal.

Bought the F2 as well. Used it for 2 portrait work and I really love the rendering and the swirly bokeh. However, got an error code 60 (possible lens obstruction error) yesterday and got it exchanged. Only had the first one for less than two weeks. Touch wood and hope for this one has better life expectancy. Really not a fan about how long the barrel extends out when doing close ups (even longer than some of the RF exterior zoom lenses). Possible way to get debris into the interior especially when motor is doing the extending and focus by wire make it impossible for self diagnosis. Considering the F1.2 for reliability if shooting professionally.

Just being real and honest, I have the F2 on my R5 and not once/ever have my photos been judged at the level of this (awesome) comparison. In fact, I only see these kinds of photographic scrutinies on KZread. The real world camera enthusiasts like me take pictures and show friends and relatives. So, bottom line is, camera companies need to sponsor a judgement panel akin to the Nobel peace prize (so to speak lol) where we send in our work and it is judged by a body of judges and cash or equipment is the reward. Then all this madness would be for something very real! Thanks for making this video, love your channel.

Hey Alex, great job on the review, that 85 1.2 knocks out all the 85 lenses no doubt. I'd like to see a couple of images at the closest distance using a real portrait (wife probably) in order to check out how sharp is the f/2 in macro mode plus the color fringing in the eye lashes, and what's the closest distance with the 1.2. A couple of vertical images would do the job. I know you did it with the video example, but in the future it would be handy to provide a couple of pictures instead. Once again, great job anyway! :)

Thanks for this comparison. Just one remark. The compression on both is exactly the same because the subject and the camera are at the same distance, the 1.2 is slightly longer so the subject is larger, but so is the background. Compare the lines of the background relative to her head. Compression only changes when distance between camera and subject changes. When you shoot this scene with a 24 and crop the image , compression would be the same

2:00 - it's probably focus breathing. This manifests diffrently from one lens to another. For example, the Nikon 105 1.4E zooms in a lot at close focus. That's why in some reviews, people said it's longer compared to the Sigma; it's not. Still 105mm nominal, with this issue on top. Some lens don't focus breathe as much

Every lens should be exact in terms of focal length and aperture value but only when focused to a far distance, the difference in your example is caused by focus breathing, a phenomenon which can be spotted in every lens, lenses without this, especially cinema optics engineers already correct at its blueprint by a little internal zooming, and yes, even prime lenses can technically zooming.

I recently was struggling between getting the RF70-200 f/4 vs the f/2.8 version. After looking at about a hundred comparison videos, and weighing what I shoot 90% of the time (landscapes), I concluded that the f/4 version of that lens made the most sense for me. I absolutely love this RF 70-200 f/4. What does this have to do with the RF 85? Well, with the money I saved by buying the f/4 and not the f/2.8 of the above mentioned lens, I was able to buy the RF 85 F/2 (Refurbished) and still have money left over compared to the 70-200 f/2.8. I am not a "portrait" shooter per se, but I do like to shoot family, friends and especially8 granddaughter. For these purposes, the 85 f/2 is just great. Even though I might not be getting the creamiest bokeh in the world, the background blur with the f/2 is still very nice and more than meets my needs. I also love playing around with the "macro" capabilities of this lens. It's not a true 1:1, but it's still pretty good and a lot of fun ti play with.

I think the understated thing about the 1.2 is the amount of light on (or from) the face. It looks like she turned into the light more with the 1.2... and that's not the case. I see this in every review. I'm saving up for the 1.2... but I don't like the weight or the minimum shooting distance. It's a 1-trick lens, but it appears to do that trick better than anything else. It just so happens I like to shoot portraits and the look of the 1.2 inspires me to take photos. So, that's the big push for me. I've decided I'd rather have just this 1 lens for my important/artistic work and go with the less expensive lenses for the rest of my kit. And yes, the 85/1.2 is really a 90.

I picked up the f/2 a few months back and have not regretted it. If you pixel peep yeah you will find differences. There’s a reason the price difference is there. Stand alone the f/2 does a fantastic job. If I’ve got people looking how closely the round balls are in the background then they don’t need me as a photographer. Now the f/2 is a tad slower in focusing and has more noise- that’s where the added costs come in for an L lens. Overall I’m very pleased with it and used the money I didn’t spend on the L for other expensive lenses.

Nice comparison video mate. The RF System and lenses look top notch! Here are some more informations, which I find missing in the video: The reason why the macro has not so shallow blur lies in the different size of the entrance pupil. Macro lenses never perform as normal lenses in the bokeh department. Also the focal length is always messured for infinity focus. And because lenses have some focus breathing, the frame is slightly different. Also I recommend you to check out Nikon Z lenses, because I think they are even better for the money. There is the Nikon Z 50mm 1.2 S yet, which is easy the best 50mm 1.2 in the world and the Z 50mm 1.8 S the best 1.8 too... The Z 85mm 1.2 will follow soon. The 1.2 is honestly more impressive than people are giving it credit. I remember back when the Otus was all the rage for optical perfection. Then this hits the market and destroys it in sharpness and longitudinal CA performance. Nobody online seems to acknowledge this? I'm personally happy with my EF 85 1.4L, but the new f/2 having the "macro" capability makes it a really attractive option for wedding day work...now I'm curious to see what Canon does with it's 135mm or possibly a 105mm lens. If either of them have attractive magnification abilities, I will scoop one up. But Canon went from 0 to every "budget lens" pretty quickly. Budget 24-105, 35, 50, and 85.

  • @jamesjin8839

I think Canon's always smarter in coming out with these strategic decisions. To me the 1.2 would be a pro portrait guy's milk and butter tool that always goes with the bag. And the f2 lens is a match made in heaven to a more video centric guy for shooting all the B-rolls and other stuff especially with the close focusing perk and being light. Many like to say Canon does not have the sheer number of established lens but just enough for them to use. And that is a smart idea compared to my old Sony system having at least 5 version of 35mm primes but none of them just totally dominates the focal length market clear as black and white. The RF trinity seems just like old EF latest trinity zoom with added lens stabilization and some design choice revisited(rf720 2.8). I believe Canon hasn't yet fully utilize the RF mount's potential. 28-70 F2 and the other rumored f2 trinity would just be the first step. I'm hyped about what RF mount could offer in the next 2 generations.

I just took a photo of a few apartment high rises at night and with the R6 and IBIS, I was able to take sharp images at f/2.5 and ISO1000. Despite the lower MP, I was still able to zoom into the highrise (NO I was not stalking!!) 200 metres away and able to make out furniture and TV screens in the units. I used both, not together side by side but I had a couple weeding with each of them. The 1.2 canon is fantastic no question there. The 1.4 samyang is not as sharp wide open. After f/4 they are equal. Samyang vignette a lot more, it corrects well but when U are 6400 ISO and above, correcting vignette gets really noisy in the corner on my Eos R. Now, lets gets practical, running around all day with 2 camera bodies, let me tell you that U will feel that canon 1.2. Enough for me to return it. The difference in sharpness will give you more cropping power on the canon 1.2 but zoomed out, I had to check the exit to remember which is which. Samyang is really that good and incredibly light so it is my go to lense now. Cherry on the cake, it doesn't make the bride dress turn purple in high contrast scenes like cheaper manufacturer used to. Personally, I got into mirrorless for size and weight, that Canon 1.2 is just ridiculous when U stay on your feet 7 to 10 hours a day

Hi Alex, I have the 85 1.4L IS that I use in my canon EOS R plus the adapter of course, would you recommend swap to the f2? To reduce size, get great AF and IS, and still have perfect sharpness and bokeh? I barely use the 1.4 at 1.4 to get more in focus I shot at 1.8 - 2 so I think that 85 f2 it’s a great solution even for video! Because of the macro capability. But I’m doubting about the change. What do you recommend? Keep the ef 1.4? Or get the rf f2? Just in case: I can’t afford the 1.2 RF and for my use its not necessary. Thanks! From Peru

Nice preliminary info. But your bokeh comparison isn't valid. As you stated, one of them isn't a true 85mm, if either is. To compare them, you should have moved the camera to equalize the size of the image recorded. Then you would be shooting both lenses at the same focal length, whatever that is. In your shots, the 1.2 produced a larger actual image on the sensor. So that tells us it is the longer of the two. Everything else being equal, the longer lens will always produce a greater amount of bokeh at the same physical distance from the subject, as expected and demonstrated in your shots. If you disagree, feel free to tell me where I went wrong. Thanks

I like the video - The RF lenses are really great, but to say they are the very best in the industry - that is yet to be seen. The Nikon Z lenses are phenomenal - the 85mm 1.8 S lens is a better portrait lens than the 85mm F2 RF lens for around the same price - it is maybe $150 more to be fair and it is not a macro like the RF - so there are trade offs, but saying something is the best is only a "compared to what" type statement. The 85mm 1.2 RF lens is clearly an amazing lens - Nikon will be bringing out their 85mm 1.2 next year, it will be fun to compare those two. Nikon's 50mm 1.2 is coming out this month - it will likewise be interesting to compare it to the 50mm 1.2 RF lens - another lens that is great. I suspect the Nikon and the Canon 1.2 lenses will be comparably awesome - with likely Nikon having the slight edge due to the superior (meaning closer) flange distance of the Z mount 16mm as opposed to 20mm on the RF mount - this means edge to edge sharpness should be superior for the Nikon's all other things being equal. Also, the Nikon Z lenses seem to be designed as much for video as they are for still shooting exhibiting very little to no focus breathing - the RF lens definitely focus breathe more than the Z lenses. This all said, I am happy to see both Canon and Nikon finally making such a good showing of new mirrorless bodies and exceptional new lines of glass - they have always been the two leaders and I for one hope they remain so. Sony has definitely contributed by innovating when Nikon and Canon got lazy and giving the two giants a kick in the butt - but I think Nikon and Canon will surpass Sony in the years ahead - within 12-24 months - as they have the better overall offerings now - Sony's E mount is seriously deficient in its design having been created originally for aps-c sensors - they will have trouble innovating head to head in future lens design with Canon and definitely with Nikon as the Z mount is simply superior in every way to the E mount and to a lesser extent it is superior to the RF mount. Still, that all said - all three of these systems are now awesome - it really doesn't matter which one someone uses - if you can't get the shot on any of these systems then you are the problem. Thanks again for the video - keep up the good work!
