Just want to say thank you for showing Skegness in a positive light. I'm a resident and business owner in the town and these surveys can do SO much damage to the already difficult tourist industry, especially in the wake of the pandemic. Many businesses, b&b's and guest houses have suffered and these anonymous surveys do nothing to help. Thanks again, Tim!!

Whilst I mostly agree with your comments, may I add that Guest houses and b&bs have suffered due to the extortionate pricing of rooms for a small family.
Absolutely nothing wrong with Skegness whatsoever, it's clean and tidy, reasonably priced and loads to do. How this place has been voted worst is beyond me, have they not been to Dover?!

I live in skeg and it makes me so mad when I hear its the worst seaside place in the country, its improved a lot and I think more improvements will be made, only downside the shops are not the greatest, the main beals shop was a great shop sold everything in that place, now its what Id call a tacky plaza, but the place gets so many visitors day trippers, weekenders, holiday weeks or fortnight's, come see the place for yourselves before judging, I think these people that just hear the name Skegness and that's it, let's class it the worst, come and see and judge for yourself.

I go once a year for a day trip, typically, and aside from the Butlins waterpark needing a few touch ups (like reactivating the jacuzzi) it's really not bad at all. Good aquarium, seal sanctuary and pedal boats; crazy golf; okay beaches; and a good range of fish and chip restaurants. Shops are nothing special, though. Ingoldsmell Fantasy Island has a few decent attractions (indoor and outdoor) too.

I was there 3 weeks ago, it was very very clean, people were friendly - no dog poo anywhere , fish n chips £7 (it's £11 up our way) cheap parking. Last time I was there in 1982, dad passed with Covid last September so we took mam back for some memories, we stayed at Igomels. I even got to go shooting at the local Gun club (thanks Margaret) lovely dogs and members made me very welcome (shot a 223).
Been plenty of times over the years and honestly don’t think it’s that bad. Did start to get a bit run down but nice to see it being rejuvenated. Think it’s biggest problem is some of the individuals it attracts
After avoiding Skeggy for about 20 years, I went back last year and have been 2 more times since. Its definitely changed. Stayed at the Quorn Hotel across from the Premier Inn, and it was brilliant. Had so much fun there, my niece loved it. Will go back again in a heartbeat.

One of the best seaside resorts in the country! Has one of the best climates. It doesn't rain ever day as it does at a certain large resort on the English West Coast. Neither does the sea disappear to somewhere in Ireland when the tide goes out. It isn't boring with steep pebble beaches like many resorts on the South Coast. We are all supposed to be 'village idiots' in Lincolnshire so perhaps WHICH Magazine think we are a pushover. We are neither idiots or a pushover. A lot of money has been invested into the resort over the last decade. It will always be popular with people from the Midlands and the North of England. It's only a small resort but still has everything for a great family holiday! WHICH Magazine are talking 'out of the end of their pier. Yes I do have that shot of the Clock Tower. Go Skeggy!! 👍 🦭 🐟🐬 🌞

Skegness is amazing I love it, and it's so close to fantasy island in Ingoldmells, then you have the open top buses which are awesome and blare out music, there's a great atmosphere in skegness, my only downside was the size of the pier, but having said that there so many amusements and things to do around it that really its a non issue,, the which survey is a load of nonsense
I have visited Skegness lots of times , it’s definitely NOT the worst seaside town I don’t know where they get the ratings from ! Every time I visit they have done improvements, and it’s very clean and tidy. A lot of money has been spent on improving the attractions . It’s great for family’s and couples, there is something for everyone, it’s well worth a visit .
Just had a week here, definitely one of the best seaside towns I’ve been too! So much to see, so much to do and it’s well kept and well priced! Loved it
Another great video Tim! I honestly think Skegness has been slowly improving every year for a while now. And I wouldn’t say it’s the worse in the UK at all.
@WalkWithMeTim
Жыл бұрын
Absolutely!
The area with the shuttered huts is pending re-development. As mentioned the pier is under recent new ownership after decades of relative decline. It looks like they are serious about spending big money to revamp the whole attraction over the next few years. Large parts of the boating lake where you were and the corner right near the clock tower adjacent to the aquarium have new plans afoot. The council put out tenders just this past year for proposals to redevelop fair sized chunks of the more empty or run down areas right on the sea front. Prime spots for new ventures. Opposite the seal sanctuary the old town hall has also recently been sold off to a well known local businessman who has invested a lot on the sea front already such as the building with the pirates chip shop and bar you featured. So there is expected further developments there. The railway station which is first point of entry for a huge number of people will be revamped. There is a bit of an ongoing fight over pedestrianisation of the upper end of the main shopping street near the clock tower, perhaps a short term test will eventually see how that goes. This will all take time and nothing is for certain but the signs are good, that there is money flowing into the town and it still has attraction for investors. Locals are optimistic, it does look on the cards and hopefully will reverse quite a bit of the deterioration of prominent tourist areas of the town. Go back in 5 years and I think there will be quite a few changes.
@robbutler9978
Жыл бұрын
Back in the day those "shuttered huts"' were on the edge of the beach looking out to the sea. There was no sea wall to get in the way of the sea view.
On quiet days it’s great and the locals seem friendly. But when it’s really busy it’s awful, it’s the tourist that ruin it. It does seem to attract very rough people who don’t seem to care or respect the town….or anyone tbh. We went last weekend and the amount of rubbish, shouting and drunks ruined the day for us.

Bane have been to Dover, Portsmouth etc when people from France etc surprised they don't get back on the ferry when they see these I would and am brit
I think a lot of it is down to the survey being inherently flawed. There are LOADS of resort towns in the UK, but most of the British public haven't been to the worst of the worst. It's more that Skegness is the worst of the most known resort towns, rather than the actual worst.
“It can’t be 10 degrees this time of year” Dude - it’s the North Sea. Consider yourself lucky you could swim in it and didn’t have to bring your ice skates 😂
When I was 19 I worked a summer on Skegness waterway driving the boats. However it was before them intercoms were installed. It's a wonder I didn't get sacked as every Sunday I would captain an eletric boat that was capable of carrying 20 passengers whilst still drunk from the night before. And the amout of free rides I used to give to my mates was ridiculous. lol. Good times.

Definitely not the worst seaside town by miles. Margate is far far more deprived. Skegness is due a lot of upgrades in the near future. It has suffered from years of neglect and lack of investment granted. I look forward to see the place again in the coming years. Hopefully the planned pier extension goes ahead soon.
@mrswigglebottom967
Жыл бұрын
Hope the upgrades are glam and not the usual small windowed buildings that look like prisons.
The problem with Skegness is it’s clientele. They leave rubbish all over the beach like dirty nappies, beer bottles and cans and the council never clean it. The whole ethos of the town is beer, beer and chips. It’s actually a great town with fantastic locals and local businesses such as Lings and the little donut stand opposite Lings run by the same family for years. Lings is a great family arcade that genuinely care about their customers and the staff are incredibly friendly and helpful. The Mellors family are investing a fortune into Skegness and Ingoldmells, but even Fantasy Island needs an upgrade. Again less alcohol and more family orientated venues instead of pubs and fake goods on what has the potential to be a great market. Skegness is only what the people who frequent it make it. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with the town. And just out of interest, since when has “shire” been pronounced “sheer”? I must be missing something because everyone seems to be doing that recently! 😂😂

The castle ruins went up as back in the days amusement parks were considered "vulgar"..and it part hid the old fair there... which had a trad figure 8 etc..various operators and latterly Butlins had an amusement park there from the early 1900s..it closed in 1969 to be replaced by a massive astroglide and moon hopper ride..again various operators had it until 3 years ago when it failed and that part is up for sale for housing. In 1969 myself and my mum rode the 16 seater eli wheel there and the operator went over the road to the cafe and shouted.."call when you want to come off"..pre hswa 1974 of course..lol..

Skegness was great when I last went in 2019. It was clean, with lots to see and do, and gave us a lovely few days by the coast. We didn't stay in Skegness though as I was skint at the time and opted for camping just a few miles inland. I remember the pleasure beach was good fun and my boys loved all the amusements and play areas. We also went into Butlins for the day and enjoyed the water park. I'd give Skegness a good 9/10, as we left I described at as like Great Yarmouth, but more compact, more to do, and cleaner.

Me and the family went there in May! We went to the seal sanctuary, which was actually really good. We also stopped and hoped that the boat would pick us up near there. Watching this as was there last week,Wednesday and Saturday and am gob smacked - you actually walked right behind me at the log flume on the seafront.I was standing watching, you were correct a chap was walking along the track and down the final drop . A log had got stuck at the bottom of the final climb on the conveyor between the water trough and the pull up.He was walking the track and testing i.e. kicking all the sensors to see if it would free the log. Unfortunately for the riders it didn't and after a few moments discussion a step ladder was brought and the lady and gent had to climb over the railings and back into the station. I have to say, both have improved loads! I took my own kids to Skegness recently and we loved it. We went to Skegness last year on a whim as Blackpool was so expensive. I must add we usually holiday abroad but I was pleasantly surprised with our week at Skegness my kids loved it one pre-teen and one teenager. We are from Scotland and found the people so lovely and the place was clean. I've only got positive things to say about it, infarct I've been advising people to visit We are actually going back this year as we loved it so much. I can't believe it was voted the worst seaside resort.
Been going since I was 7 with my grandparents and love it, many happy memories and now those are being made with my children. They love going every year and particularly love fantasy island. Went in May and going again in 3 weeks. Now I havnt looked at the rankings but I assume southern bias takes hold for the majority of it
Awww I love Skegness. I went quite a few times growing up as I'm from the Midlands. Last went in 2018 and we had a great time. The beach is lovely, loved the seal sanctuary and the funfair at the front too.
Been their many times and it’s great! Lots to do, clean and tidy, very safe place with coastguard, life guards, police, firefighters and hospitals/ambulance server their/so close to their! How did it get its name as the worst resort/place ether? I’m not sure, it’s like a second home to me as I go their so much. Take my word for it, I’ve been to mist worsted places and actually I highly recommend Skegness as a place to go on holiday at!
Have stayed in the Savoy hotel and booke in again for September this year. Nice reasonably priced hotel

We've got a seasonal pitch at Skegness fields this year. We're just discovering different places here. We have a dog and have found a lovely walk on north side near seal sanctuary. Only downside people throw rubbish into the waterway round there. Loads to do in skegness if you look for it.
I don’t see why it’s ranked worse! Looks decent to me,.My grandparents used to take me to Skegness in the caravan in the late 70’s early 80’s I used to love the penny arcade on the pier🤣

I think it must be the negative stereotypes it has (not sure who created them though). For example, I’ve never been to Skegness but still have negative connotations of it - it looks pretty nice though tbf

The Arnold Palmer mini golf course at Skegness remains my most favourite course in the UK. So many childhood memories there, and still remains great.
Hi Tim, me again. This year I set out from London on my bicycle (May 5th) to cycle up to the North of Scotland, up the east of Britain cross from east to west and come back down the Westside as far as Bristol, then back to London. The reverse of my 2014 expedition. To try to cover areas of Britain I haven't done before (not many left) after Boston I decided to follow the coast. Skegness being the first seaside town. I camped in the dunes near the Butlins just to the north of Skegness. After Skegness I went to Mablethorpe, then Cleethorpes, the Grimsby (godawful place) then crossed the Humber, Hull, Hornsea, Bridlington, Scarborough, Whitby (currently wild camping just outside York, had to backtrack somewhat. Part of the expedition requires a 'mission to take care of in York where I've been these last three weeks and will be heading north again middle of next week, hopefully, 'mission' complete'). Anyway, Skegness is ok. Like Blackpool, but not gone to seed. And easily the nicest spot up the Lincolnshire coast. You want to see a dump of a seaside town? Visit Cleethorpes. It's a real hole, also an overpriced rip off and the people are unfriendly (have a look at my Facebook, I've been keeping a log/journal of the places I've been visiting, my impressions and experiences there. Cleethorpes is easily the worst seaside town up that section of the coast. Of the Yorkshire coast, Bridlington is about the seediest and Whitby easily the most boring (OAP's and middle aged Tory types, apart from the Abbey and the fossil hunting, there's bog all to do. Not a young town at all. Nothing for younger people. Dull and old). Scarborough is ok though. Bit of everything. Skegness? Better than Mablethorpe and way nicer than Cleethorpes. Note though. Bloody expensive. Hardly any Tesco's or Sainsbury's anywhere up the coast. It's like Spar and Coop have a monopoly and their prices are way higher than the regular supermarkets. I wild camp and keep it real, because I want to see/experience it for real not as a tourist. Also I'm on a shoestring budget as my expeditions usually last the whole summer (and on occasion autumn and even winter). 2013, I did a European tour. 11 countries, over 7 months covering approximately 7,500km. From 2013 to 2018, there was only 2015, I didn't spend most of the year, 'on the road'. 2018, health reasons, I had to stop. 2019 was preparing for another in 2020, then the lockdowns came. 2021, my health (diabetes with complications) got worse again. But this year I was determined and was on top of most of my health issues so....... But for BREXIT and the travel complications and our unpopularity in Europe now, I'd be on the road heading for the south of France. How I hate BREXIT! Anyway, have a look at the journal, and see what Britain and the British in the different areas are like. From ground level as something of a cycle nomad. T. BTW to see the Lincolnshire section you'll have to scroll down a bit. Also btw, I'm writing this from my tent, wild camped on a field (common ground, kinda hidden and no one's bothered me at all) within sight of Monks Cross leisure centre, a 'one stop shop' where I have access to toilets, showers and library (to charge my phone and battery pack). With supermarkets (also a good access to toilets when travelling. I use the disabled toilets to wash and clean up..... naughty, well no. I am disabled, but I try to stay on top of the health issues. Diabetes with complications) and shops adjacent.
Have just recently been to Skegness for a mini-break. Don't understand it being rated the worst. That is not fair. xx

We had a fabulous family holiday at Skegness over Easter. We stayed at the brilliant Parkdean Southview resort which has had loads spent on it. We loved the town and resort and our kids (4 & 8) want to go back.
Went here last August (from London and Boston as we picked up my Son on the way) . I liked it . The High Street is adequate as is their little shopping centre . The fair is pretty good with various rides. Ninja Mitton Cafe I scored a 10/10 for on Trip Advisor .

But, if you were to venture towards Skeggy from Burgh le Marsh , I would avoid The Welcome Inn . Going towards Burgh le Marsh though, I highly recommend Henry's
I also love Skegness. We live in Lincoln and it’s always been one of the three quick drive seaside escapes my family regularly use. Skeg Vegas is always clean, there is plenty to do, the people are friendly and prices are fair. There is a lot to do for free and the beach is always clean. Skeggy is a legendary old fashioned seaside town that’s always being upgraded and looked after. How it can have achieved this status is a mystery to my family. Long may Skegvegas reign as one of the BEST seaside destinations.
I've been visiting for 60 years & it's definitely gone downhill bigtime. Everything has gone on the South Parade - model village, Kiddies corner, crazy golf, Pitch & putt, bowling greens. The gardens used to be immaculate with an army of council workers maintaining them, but all now gone to waste. Just seems to be all bars & amusement arcades, now.
I think Skegness looks just great. I dont understand why it gets such a low rating. The funfair rides look nice and I love all the colours that Skegness has. It is definitely better than Margate and far less grotty than Blackpool. I don't get it!

I live in the northeast and loved going to "Skeggy" on a working holiday to Derbyshire miners holiday camp. In the early 1980's we took our pensioners from the day centre and I have loads of fond memories of both the camp and town.
I absolutely love Skeggy! So many happy memories from my time there. Interesting fact, The East Lindsey coast has the highest number of caravans in the UK, nearly 25,000! I've been a good few times over the years and always had a brilliant time, staying at Butlins and on a few caravan sites around the area. The beach sand is a bit coarse but you can still build sandcastles, and it is always very clean. Good to see Natureland is still there! It's a rescue centre for seals, but they have a brilliant butterfly area, and rescued penguins too! They had a crocodile too if I remember correctly. It's a shame I live 178 miles from Skegness as it's a drive and a half to get there, but I wish I had been more over the years. It's 2.5hrs from Great Yarmouth, and a nice drive down the A52 & A47. It's also 60 minutes up to Cleethorpes via the A16, passing by Mablethorpe which is another nice seaside town. Thinking back, it was 2001 when I was last there! We went to watch Joe Pasquale at the Embassy Theatre, and he was hilarious! In 1993 we'd gone to see Billy Pearce, with Joe the support act, and Dave Benson Phillips too (who wasn't very good unfortunately). Billy Pearce was absolutely brilliant though. In 2007 a huge fire ripped through buildings on the seafront. More than 120 firefighters fought to contain the blaze, which destroyed a number of businesses on the town's Grand Parade. An amusement arcade, bars, clubs, restaurants and the old Parade Hotel were destroyed, so it's good to see everything has been rebuilt and looks better than ever. How it is voted worse than Rhyl is beyond me! Great video Tim, and another trip down amnesia drive for me!

All my childhood holidays were in Skegness, Chapel St Leonard’s and Mablethorpe and I wouldn’t change any of them. Such happy memories. Skegness has gone a bit down hill, but it’s still a fun place.
Been here for a family holiday two years running and have booked to return next year. My boys loved the vintage fair especially the dodgems. If it’s a quiet day, they get a longer turn than they do during busy periods. The boating lake is fabulous. We always go on the pedaloes and the Fairy Dell splash pool is brilliant at the other side of the boating late (and free!) My older boys enjoyed climbing the high wire Altitude 44 and wouldn’t stop talking about it for the rest of the holiday. The instructors are very friendly and chatty and are fantastic with nervous climbers and children. The Seal Sanctuary is definitely worth a visit. You get to see recovering seals in the seal hospital and the well seals in the rehabilitation pools ready to be released back into the wild. There are also creepy crawlies and reptiles, penguins, a butterfly house and a petting zoo with goats, sheep and alpacas that you can feed. There are plenty of picnic tables so you can bring your own food if you’re on a budget. In terms of food, I recommend Trawlers Catch which is the pirate themed fish and chip shop in the video. There is also a shack near the pleasure beach that sells chocolate kebabs! We can’t wait to return! In fact we’re planning on visiting in winter when we come to see the baby seals at Donna Nook.
I thought that paying £14 for the boat ride was a bit steep! 😕 I was originally supposed to go to Skeggy summer 2020 but COVID (🤬China!!) ruined that that plan & had to cancel. It looks pretty clean from the video.

I love Skeggy. It has a lot to offer and is a good day out or holiday. The town centre could do with a little modernisation as last time I was there, lots of shops were boarded up. But the place isn’t overly bad. Beach is clean. the only thing that bugs me is having to pay for the toilets that the council run. It should be free, especially the amount of money tourists bring in. But it’s a decent place with lots to do and it’s not as expensive as other tourist attractions.

Only been here once about 12-13 years ago with my x-gf family. The holiday started out crap only because of my x haha but it got better. Her dad took me fishing on the beach with ocean rods or something of the like. Squid bait we picked up from a tackle shop. I was crap but I loved it, the sand was warm, few beers away from the dog walkers ect and yes literally just a few. Never went on any rides but I did win my first bet on one of those roulette wheel machines. Won £100 and the best part about the whole thing, I didn't have to put up with a kaniving cheating cow! Great video! Makes me wanna go back and fish again!

I loved Skeggy as a kid, I was honestly expecting the worst when I watched this but this looks nowhere near as bad I thought, honestly I wouldn’t mind visiting again. Worst seaside resort in Britain? Really? It seems pretty harsh to me.
Skeggy's got a great beach (admittedly, if you drive 20 minutes up the coast, Huttoft Bank, Mogg's Eye or Walla Bank all have better beaches, simply because they're less full), decent chippies, and the seal sanctuary. I feel lucky to live just down the road from it in Boston.

Great video, I visited Skegness in the early 2000's. I didn't find it too bad. I think seaside resorts in the UK in general get a lot of criticism. For example I don't live too far from Blackpool which is a busy resort but a lot of resorts are quite run down because people would rather go abroad because its often cheaper than staycations. Take Blackpool for example go a couple of streets away from the tourist part and its a different place abject poverty.
We don’t have the same traditions at the sea side in America. Popping over to the UK for two weeks next month. I’m really so tempted to visit a seaside town while there. I find this all so charming
