My family lived on a small farm in Glendale for 10 Yrs. All was well until the Oregon Government got into the pot business. Both farms around me were sold to pot growers, who were ex-falons from California. I called he sheriff more then seven times regarding crimes occurring, yet they never responded. The growers ran me off the road once, and shot out the rear window of my truck once, yet no law enforcement ever responded. We sold the farm, to a drug dealer, for half the recorded value. My wife was raised in Cave Junction. It was a drug city way back in the 60's. In one year there were 7 unsolved murders, one being a relative. Your lecture was spot on, thank you.

I grew up in Rogue River and only places I would not live/visit include: west part of Medford (aka South Medford High area) by Blackbird store off West Main St. is HORRIBLE... has been since the 90's. White City used to be sketchy and trailer park city, but is starting to clean up because east Medford is so expensive. Gold Hill is just poor, but still fun. Cave Junction is just depressing and stuck in the 80s, and not in a good way. Agreed, Cave Junction/Illinois Valley has always been "Pot Central". Surprised you didn't mention anything about Klamath Falls and the meth issue out there.

Yeah, let's continue to bash West Medford. Honestly the "bad" pockets are relatively few and far between. If the city would stop dumping on us and allowing organizations like the Gospel Mission to be located across the street, the number of bad apples would decrease significantly. But hey, most folks throughout Medford including the city council like to manifest this area as the "ghetto" of Medford. The potential here is amazing, and most given streets in West Medford could be transplanted to the railroad district in Ashland and they would fit in. There's actually worse pockets with more crime on the "East Side." It would be cool if folks would stop with the lies about the West Side, and help us realize the true potential of a historical part of town.

Sick of the homeless people all over yes, but still better than GP or Medford. All our funds get sent to GP. And please, if you’re going to recommend places to eat there’s lots of others besides Taylor’s which in and of itself has been an eyesore to our community for two years due to their continuing construction. There’s The Replay, River Valley Restaurant, two pizza places, and Gimmies, plus others besides the mediocre Taylor’s and Carlos’.

Most agents don't warn people about this kind of thing. I've lived in Southern Oregon since 1976. West Medford and White City are crime hubs. Williams and Wolf Creek and a few other places are chock full of hippies and pot farms. Sam's Valley is dry and has one store. Just keep bad mouthing, SO. It keeps retired Californians like me out. I think most people here are happy , caring, and poor because this area has had a rough history. The pot and timber industries are both controlled by the government, so I'm not surprise to see problems and impovished workers. The real estate financial complex would love to gentrify all of SO to make higher commissions. I get it looking out for number one is the 'merican motto. Bad mouthing our towns to get a cop tax passed forces the spiral downward and hurts the least the most. Balancing resources with needs is the solution. Business, education, courts, banking and labor have got to work together to raise the worth of everybody and give them pride in a place they can own and keep.

I'm happy to discuss any specific point you're referring to, but I think a blanket statement that the local governments are the sole cause of the issues is just flat out wrong. For example, the City of Medford is responsible for both East and West Medford. Both very different. The Josephine County residents voted down the levys to fund the sheriff's department, not the other way around. Is there a specific system you're referring to that is failing and causing these issues?

  • @ShimZone

@@BuyingSouthernOregon I don't think it's the JoCo residents that voted down the levys to fund the sheriff's department. I count my blessings to have grown up in Southern Oregon, but when I return now to visit family I'm a bit disappointed. There's incredible natural beauty, but as you mentioned local support for basic municipal services has clearly reduced safety and general quality of life for most. That said, most anywhere you choose to live has benefits and drawbacks. The subjective question we all need to ask is, "Are the positive attributes so good that I can tolerate the downsides?"

Yeah there’s a lot of pot growing, it’s not a problem unless you go trespassing. It’s a half hour drive to GP but it’s a beautiful country road drive. Ace hardware and Hidden Valley market are 12 miles away in Murphy. The Apple Gate valley is 6 miles down the hill, just a short drive to all the wineries. Plaisance Ranch & Winery right here in town, grass fed beef, wine and music in the summer. Hiking trails to the top of Grayback mountain if you got the legs built for that. I can cruise my quad to the country store for a 12 pack of beer. 🍻 Country living.👍🏻 Now that I think about it, keep telling everyone how bad Williams is……we don’t want them here.😁 Wife and I love the channel, thanks.

We lived in Williams for two years and got out. Rough area with all the illegal pot grown and many people that don’t care in the area mattresses and furniture just dumped along side the highway. Many unsafe drivers, do to no police presence in the area. No shopping in town. Only a high priced tiny grocery store. Wi fi reception is terrible in the area. With few options. Roads are not maintained well. Graffiti on the bridges. It’s depressing to live there.

White City is not a city. It is in the Jackson County. White City is mostly industrial area. I helped Amy's Kitchen Inc to relocate to White City from Santa Rosa CA back in 2006. Wolf Creek, Sams Valley, Glendale, Cave Junction are considered 'rural'. Since the hospital was built in Grants Pass, many California retired folks moved there as real estate i.e. house prices were relative cheap! Grants Pass has the rich who likes to live by the Rogue River and then the poor then the homeless who camps at the park. I am a commercial real estate expert as a seasoned CCIM that I always ask 'What is the economic base of that town?"

Watch out for the druggies tho. lol. If you want to live in West Medford free of problems then don’t own anything expensive. On the flip side we have live music often, as there’s a Mariachi band playing somewhere nearby every weekend of the nice weather.

Klamath Falls. The amount of drugs and murders for such a smaller place is crazy! But I guess the fact that Air Force one can land here makes up for that. Want a good story? There was a Chinese restaurant that was always packed. I can still hear their commercial. “Sonny say, eat more Chinese foo”. We had a sheriff, and a few others, that shook one too many dirty hands and got caught one day. By the next day, the Chinese restaurant was closed. Sonny and family gone from town overnight. Why? Oh just some sex slaves/trade underneath the restaurant. There’s bikers in this town that still talk about the good ole boy about doing lines off the hood of his gov rig and even have pictures to prove it. But now, he’s gone and the homeless population that was never a thing here has started moving their camps to every corner. The amount of fentanyl is off the charts and there’s still lots of shootings. Moved from town last year. I’m more mountain, quiet and stars now. Only go to town once a week/twice tops. Cut friends off because they all started doing ..things that I won’t and would never have around my family. It was a good trade in the long run.

The sad thing is, that Sheriff used to have his son sell meth out of the sheriff's house.. I believe him and his family are still trying to "Yellowstone meets Beaking Bad" the area. The murders of young boys in the area from 2010 through current is appalling. Not to mention kidnappings/attempted kidnappings and sexual assaults.. At least the predators disappear when law enforcement can't or won't help. Drugs, "gangs," and corruption are the driving force behind the darkness in Klamath Falls. It's expanding, and I hope the good starts outweighing the bad. It's possible to live here and avoid drug, etc. drama. You just can't expect to make friends or trust too many people. I'd say roughly 1 of 10 people casually use hard drugs, and 1 of 20 people are probably too sketchy to even converse with.

There's still a big Veterans' facility there. It is now one of the biggest industrial areas in Oregon. Wood products, mainly. Unfortunately, cheap housing was thrown up in the decades after WW2.

I left Oregon. I’m from the mid-west and moved back to California. Im moved from west coast 20 years ago. Was sold a lie. Beautiful place to live but the people and culture backward and why I moved back to the Bay Area. Too many racists, especially from the locals that are generational locals . I’m a realist and can accept no place is perfect. In Medford and Grants pass people are openly racist and say ignorant statements. It was the first place my 5 year old experienced racism from other kids. Many locals hate outsiders and can be very rude. Assholes aren’t just in California, as a mid-western manners matter. Smaller towns don’t always have friendly people. The cultural and educational resources just didn’t fit what was best for my family. Kids should grow up not having to defend their racial background or existence. And I’m white and my kids are mixed. My biggest mistake was not taking the time to check how the local culture would affect my children.

I like that. Anyway, if you love cops so much, then YOU should fund them. Leave the rest of us alone. Some of us are not so thrilled at some of the shady things cops do, such as civil asset forfeiture. And guess what, there is car theft in Portland too.
