Worst Levels Ever # 38

Unfortunately, although there are lots of fantastic levels and stages in video games, there are also a fair few awful ones.
Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest has been a classic the moment it was released and that is unlikely to change any time soon. Oustanding graphics, awesome music and most importantly, dangerously fun gameplay that's just as much fun today as it was in 1995.
However, there is one level from this game that I always dread having to go through...

@@dnmstarsi I think the first half of Chapter 7 in TTYD was worse then Chapter 4 in it's entirety. It's sad too because it is the only traditional ice area in the game and the first Paper Mario nailed it so well. I don't even mind the atmosphere of the place. The problem is how it's designed. Fhar Outpost is the only town in the game where backtracking to it and traveling back and forth between it is a chore. There is no shortcut pipe that can take you to the Outpost. you have to go the long way traveling down the path with respawning enemies that return even if you defeat them upon heading to the town. This is made worse because you have to go to the town. Trigger an event leave town. The enemies respawn. You have to haul yourself to previous locations to find a guy. Then you end up not finding him so you have to go down the path again to get to the town and play a game of step on the Bob-omb's head to wake him up. Thankfully the dreadful beginning of Chapter 7 is more then made up for by the rest of it as you are launched out of a cannon to the moon and the moon is a very cool setting and the fortress is an even cooler one with some clever puzzles and mechanics to it all culminating into your final showdown with Lord Crump in an upgraded mech suit for the final Crystal Star.

I dunno man, I like Web Woods. It's a perfect balance of two elements; there is this urgency to move forward at a fast pace (mainly because of the temporary platforms, some places you can charge through and avoid all enemies (the drop with the Neckys comes to mind)) but you can take it slow and easy if you want. The only things I can say against it is that it's way too long and that I wish the camera movement had been handled better. Now if I were to nominate the worst level, it would be, without a doubt, Toxic Tower. I like the premise, I like that it makes you use/transform into multiple animal buddies, but I _hate_ the pressure. You never get to enjoy the level properly and explore every nook and cranny because you're always in a hurry to get away from the acid, and it doesn't help that Rattly can be a little tricky to control and Squawks, who comes immediately after, provides such a drastic shift in speed and agility that I find myself slamming into wasps all the time. The Squitter stage might as well not be there; completely pointless. Even the bonus is as uncreative as they get, but thankfully there is only one and at a point where the acid should not get to you quickly. I find Toxic Tower to be worse than Screech's Sprint because that at least keeps you as one animal buddy and there are a couple barrels that should give you a good enough advantage (and you can skip the race but still). Quick edit: people have pointed out the Mudhole Marsh DK coin, and I think that one is far worse. I struggled with it much more because I couldn't get the timing right with the dumb moving barrel; yes, the window of opportunity is generous, but I still found it much easier to press a single button at the right time. Btw, about that bonus stage: if you place your webs correctly, you can actually follow the fast cannon ball to save time. I saw it in a speedrun (V0oid's run of DKC2 102% in AGDQ 2016, around 1:03:50 if you were interested) but it's incredibly hard.

Ironically Krack-Shot Kroc in DKC3 doesn't earn nearly as much ire despite being the same concept except now with a sniper after you for the entire level. Maybe because it goes in multiple directions and has that rocking factory soundtrack, and isn't quite as long or unforgiving.

Oh yeah, that level was pretty rough. It doesn't have the end-of-level DK coin trick, though, I'll give it that. It also has some rest areas behind some metal barriers where you can briefly relax, while Web Woods forces you to perform a slow task as fast as possible by constantly creating platforms that disappear over time. There's a lot less ground in Web Woods, I believe. Still, you make a good point. I actually forgot about that level. The sniper Krosshair is much more memorable in DK64 where he dishes out childhood trauma. Apparently, he's a robot, and there's a rare picture of him somewhere, but I've never been able to find it. Huh, seems I have an unpopular opinion from what I've seen in the comments so far, but I actually kinda liked this level. Or at least didn't mind it? Didn't feel it was that slow because it's a temporary platform level, except you're in charge of making the platforms, so you have to constantly be doing something. I'm not a completionist for the DK games (or Rare games in general) so the DK Coin at the end never stood out to me, but admittedly that's a pretty crappy move from the devs, and not just because it's in a slow-paced level. It's just a dick move in general to force players to replay a level for a random-looking* reward that's required for completion * Yes the end level reward is not random, but it's kinda presented as such since it's a roulette/slot machine kind of deal

Instead, I ended up playing through its Game Boy counterparts, the Donkey Long Land trilogy, followed later by the GBA versions of the Donkey Kong Country trilogy. Anyways, Donkey Kong Land 2 had its own versions of some well-known levels, and yes, it included Web Woods. Personally, I was stuck there until I had accidentally stumbled onto Squitter's web platform ability, which, IMO, hadn't been communicated well. Even now, I wish that this level, both in DKC and DKL, had been relegated to the secret world, and required players to practice with Squitter's web platform ability to fetch some kind of collectable, perhaps within some kind of optional bonus area, before being able to access said secret level using said collectable as a key.

Bramble Scramble is the kind of level that would just stop me as a kid, and the DK coin at the end of Mudhole Marsh is, at least in my opinion, a hell of a lot easier to fuck up. It's one of the greatest games ever made, no argument here, but some of these levels can go die in a fire. xD

I highly recommend you do a worst levels ever video on the final level of the Captain Toad Treasure Tracker DLC. It’s not hard if you just beat it regularly, but if you want to get the special objective done, it’s the absolute worst level in the game.

It's been ages since I had a SNES, but I vaguely remember that the Midway Barrel is very early in the level as well. Thus, if you fail near the end, you will be forced to retread a great deal of ground. My co-op game with a sibling had us stuck here, though I somehow managed to get through on my single-player file.

Me Before I Watched This Video: What's The Worst Level Of DKC2? Hmmm, Toxic Tower?

Oh yeah. This level was a pain the as ass as a kid, but was easier when i got older, but still tedious. I remember it draining me so much as a kid that once i finally beat it i went backwards to the school to save so i would not have to do that shit over when the boss gave me a hard time. But Web woods still have nothing on levels like some of the later ice levels or Animal Actics when it came to infuriating me with its difficulty

The DK coin at the end of the level does seem like a dickish move, I'll give you that. Honestly I would have preferred if it was in a "bonus room", like the first one in Kannon's Klaim.

I can never pass this game as the later levels are ridiculously hard! But it’s still my favorite of the three for it’s characters, game level designs and just overall enjoyable quality. Part 3 I didn’t care for and part 1 is too slow.

@Pen Bashiro, MD Of course Toxic Tower is pretty easy nowadays. But what made it hard for me back then was how stressful the level is, and especially how you start the climb with Rattly. Took me ages just to get past that part, Rattly's controls are just... awful.

Yep, gonna have to agree with everything said in this video. There are (a few) harder levels in the game, but they are much more fun to play. And this is definitely the hardest level to 100%. And it is possible to make fun Squitter themed levels. Case in point, Krack Shot Kroc from DKC3, which is a MUCH more fun version of Web Woods.

At least IMO one of the best musics in the whole SNES DKC trilogy plays during this stage. Freaking zel I love the ghost forest music so much. But then again, it's a "one of the best" in a collection of strong tracks. The DK Coin is SUPER rude, though, like why....!?

Unlike the first DKC I've never felt that semi-speedrun feeling, might be the reason dkc2 is my least favorite, and this level clearly sucks, even though you are supposed to use the most op animal buddy there

My Top 5 Worst DKC2 Levels: 5. Haunted Hall: Sometimes the Minus Barrels are hard to avoid at such a fast speed, and Kackle is ready to kill Diddy and Dixie! Plus, as an extra mean trick, there are two bonus stages, one of which requires you to do the other part and move backwards. 4. Klobber Karnage: The second half of the level features lots of Rotatable Barrels, but the timing can be off sometimes and you will get stung by the Zingers. I feel sorry for ZSNES players... 3. Web Woods: See this video. 2. Screech's Sprint: Screech is pretty creepy-looking, so you might get stressed when you see the parrot. Plus, Squawks gets in a death race with him and you're bound to get stung, passed and poked to get to the goal. 1. Animal Antics' Squawks section: The first three parts of the level are easy enough (Rambi can just charge and jump, Enguarde just needs to dodge Puftups and Shuris and Squitter can use his web platforms to avoid most of his part of the level), but when you turn into Squawks, the friggin' wind blows you everywhere. You need to fly against the flow most of the time or you'll get a nasty Zinger sting/bramble spikes. Be thankful that Rattly's section after this is really easy.

As much as I like DKC2, the first one is admittedly my favorite. It's far from perfect and the sequel(s) are an improvement from the original but I have so much attachment to the original game that I can't say DKC2 is my favorite of the trilogy even after Nintendo Switch made them accessible and me playing both games. With that said, DKC2 is the better game for various reasons, it's still a classic like the original although more so and even this gem has a scratch or two when you look closely.

Controversial Opinion: Bramble Blast is a good contender for my LEAST favourite level in the game for me. I appreciate switching up the pace with new ways to present familiar ideas, but when you're doing the same sections over and over without the free flow of normal platforming, it becomes infuriating. Also as nice as Stickerbush Symphony is, it kinda digs into my ears the wrong way after doing the level too many times. The vine background isn't exactly the prettiest thing to look at either after going through so many captivating landscapes.

I raged at this level so much that I decided to go outside, find a spider and flip the middle finger at it. Whilst saying and I quote "fuck you squitter". Although, I guess not the worst animal buddy, I now realize that squawks is even less fun to use mainly because a majority of the levels have spiked walls.

One thing that seems to get overlooked with bad things about this level is the checkpoint barrel is WAY too early in the stage. Like 25% into the stage and that's the quick 25%. The other 75% is the slow part. They could have cushioned the blow by putting the barrel deeper in the stage

  • @napoleoncomplex2712

Its weirdly mean-spirited. The devs have to know that's a long-winded level. Why punish the player by putting an incredibly obnoxious timing puzzle at the end if they want to max their completion out? What's the design philosophy here, 'Sometimes life is about persisting at a boring chore'?

  • @willy24able

And that level is the major reason why I rather play the version with the Save State especially the Wii U Virtual Console version. I'm sorry, but this is not the best Donkey Kong Country game despite being the best of the SNES trilogy. The true Donkey Kong Country game IMO is Tropical Freeze. Despite the villains not being King K Rool and 100% completion is still shit like the original DKC Returns, at least the overall fun factor is much better due to the technology of the game being more advanced than the SNES classic.
