Worst Levels Ever # 10
Unfortunately, although there are lots of fantastic levels and stages in video games, there are also a fair few awful ones. This time, we look at a very boring and dull early level from an SRPG.
I will more likely pick bad levels from games that I otherwise enjoy. These are the ones that stick out the most and can bring good games down.

This is why I tried to find the leader of these battles as fast as possible. The laser eye battle, for example, can be beaten without having to cross the laser bridge if you fly your birdmen over and kill the Silver Knight on the stairs.

I would grind out the whole laser eye level and beat everything for the XP. Took forever! I have played through the games multiple times though because I love it so much.
As far I know, one of the lead developers of Shining Force mentioned that Fire Emblem has horrible pacing. Well, he's right, but most fire emblem games don't have THIS level of slow terrain. I mean Jesus Christ, trekking through mountains surrounded by forests! FE games have slow chapters too, but it's usually 2-3 chapters per game at most, and even then it's not this bad.

Actually, if Max reach the castle you can end the battle early. But yes, it takes a while getting there. X D But then again, that the whole thing take forever is actually the point storywise. Those Runefaust soldiers are there to prevent outsider to interfere while their leader is doing stuff in the castle. When you FINALLY arrive, it's too late to do anything. Also, you didn't mention Gong could be recruited. It helps making that part easier. :P

I like Shining Force over Fire Emblem for one simple reason: it makes deaths non-permanent and compensates by making the enemies themselves much stronger than your units. Most players will try to keep their entire army intact throughout the duration of the game, but in Fire Emblem, one bad roll of the RNG will force you to rage-quit and start a chapter over. In Shining Force, I know that I will be losing characters in a battle more often than not, but with enemies that are stronger, the challenge is allocating characters as a resource.
I love that "DOSH" sound when they attack.

When I saw Shining Force I thought it was going to be the BS Circus Tent fight that happens pretty early in the game and is really damn brutal, but I agree that the first game had way too many levels where the terrain grinds the pace to a screeching halt... and this is a turn based strategy game! These games are not known for their blindingly fast gameplay!
@Mewseeker

That boss in the circus hit like a truck. X D That being said, it's not so bad if you remember that equipment can also be used as item. One of the ring can boost attack which helps taking down the boss fast.

I actually beat that level first try, it was the third level that got me, because I didn't even know how to revive all the dead characters that I had.
Those first Shining Force battles are rough. If you think about it, this was a way for them to introduce things like Boss units (Rune Knight), Land Effect and unit types' movement preferences (Horses can't move through mountains easily). It's painful but it implicitly teaches you all this. Your comments even show how you're aiming to have enemies on grass and not mountain so the lessons taught there are working... it's just rough. I hate that second battle so much.

5:57 also: a first time player wouldn't have known that some characters can be recruited. however some of them have requirements that are less obvious then others, you basically passed right over gong the monk, which you just talk to him to recruit him, in that chateau you resurrected your characters at unless you didn't for the sake of the episode

Gong is pretty strong though. He's almost as strong as Max in the beginning, and he can heal too. He even gets the Aura spell. Gong is one of the most badass characters on the game. Hanzo would be as good if he didn't appear that late on the game.
As much as I like the classic Shining Force 1, it's true that some stages are not as fun as others, mostly because it takes a while to reach the enemies, and as you point out, with all those terrains it takes even more. Although that's not a problem of this game only, saddly no S-RPG is safe from that flaw in some way or another. Another thing I didn't like as much is the stat growth system, just like FE, you can have very bad luck; unfortunatelly that's one of the most usual things in this genre, even when it only serves to make a good chunk of the characters on this games not very useful/ just a fucking joke. At least in my eyes, of course. In Shining Force 1 is more about the level up system being a dick with the player and not that much about each character, but in case of FE it's more about the developers making the characters bad at their own will. Why the developers create so many characters just to fuck them in the stat/gameplay department? I always thought it was a total waste of time for both, the developers and the players. If you're going to make characters, don't waste your time doing them bad and don't add them to the game just to fill spaces. Wouldn't it be great if you had a lot of good choices to create your own team instead of choosing "the ones that doesn't suck"? Anyway... I find Shining Force 2 being much better and enjoyable in general (Stat Growth fixed for the most part too), although I still love the cast of characters from the first one, it is quite varied and bizarre, with things like a Squid Wizard, a flying Don Quijote, that Knight-Tank Armadillo guy, Jay Leno as a centaur,... And the best thing in the universe, JOGURT! i'm sure you'll agree! While far from perfect I still like the game, and I even would choose SF1 over some of the Fire Emblem titles. And sorry for the rant, lol.

Oh God... battle 10... make it stop!!
I'm playing the GBA version now. They added OPTIONAL TURN LIMITS to all these damn maps without changing the size of the maps. So if you want the cool rewards you have to blitz through the map, meaning your low movement units (including healers) get left in the dust. Kinda reminds me of FE4. On the bright side, you get a shaman who can boost movement for the battle in then GBA version, which really helps.
I thankfully watched this before playing through shining force on the Genesis Classic, thanks for mentioning that hidden spell. This was, believe it or not, my first strategy RPG with a level-up system, and I played it first a few months ago. I don't know why I waited this long.

Shining Force was actually one of the first SRPGs that I played, and I thought it was really neat. HOWEVER, I distinctively remember many more battles that you didn't list that were terribly long and dull, and I couldn't even complete the game because almost every battle took entirely too long.

I've done the GBA version and it seems they lowered Map size. But even with those problem this game is one of my all time favorite. On gba i loved replaying with different characters. One of my favourite was arthur. terrible stat at the beginning (like donnel in FE awakening), but begin to learn magic and got decend Level up stat rating.
HA! You almost had me with that Fire Emblem trick you did there! (the 'f**k it' bit.) Thankfully, the internet is a very useful tool in these situations ;) Hard to trick people while we have access to it! I must say though, how annoying (or amusing) must it be to go through the whole game, while constantly being called 'f**k it'. :P
I saw Shining Force in the thumbnail, and I had to wonder which level you were referring to. It has been years since I last played this one, and yes, the pacing of that level is TERRIBLE. But the game gets so much better as it goes on. The whole chapter in Shade Abbey remains my favorite in any SRPG.
Gah, watching this video reminds me of why every time I have tried to pick up Shining Force, I just quit. I have never seen beyond the second battle because of the reasons you mentioned. At least in FE they are small maps with 3-5 enemies total in the beginning boring tutorial stuff.
@tali6844
8 жыл бұрын
Eventually it gets better and you get a shitload of other characters and some of the battles are actually intense, the worst battle in my opinion is when you have to fight a boss with like 90 hit points and infinite magic and she constantly used heal. Worst part is you also just faced a, and I mean this very literally, hellish onslaught of the toughest normal enemies in the game.
"I´m sorry, fuck it...." Lyn 2014.
Speaking of first impressions, I keep hearing about people who quit Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne because of Matador, Though I haven't seen any person complaining about him myself but I can see why. Early game boss(Like the 3rd or 4th) You don't get Dekunda(The skill the removes buffs from the enemy) yet Matador uses Red Capote(Maximum Hit/Evasion, Equal to using the Hit/Evasion buff 4 times) as an opener Even if you decrease his Hit/Evasion by the debuff, You need to do it 4 Times to neutralize it The battle system punishes you for missing, If you attack and miss, You lose 2 Mini-turns(Each turn you get mini-turns equal to the party members number) without doing damage He can use Red Capote anytime he wants in the battle even if you make his Hit/Evasion normal
Sorta sets the tone for all of the game. Shining Force was my first encounter with SRPGs, so I didn't really care. I figured that kind of pacing was the norm in the genre, and it sorta shaped my play-style all around. (Defensive, conserving, and cautious.)

Kibchi Redanlae Yeah I already posted a comment after this that said I probably wouldn't get into this, sadly... Though I do like Speed being a determining factor, there's no real way see who will go next, like Final Fantasy Tactics (Which I have not played...)
For the Shining Force 1 game, if you exit the first battle before beating it, you can travel to the right to find a cabin with an guy chopping wood. Talk to him and he'll join your team, which is the only time you can get him.
I know I'm late, but I have something to add. The GBA version is worse, since you have to complete it in 12 turns or less, so you have to trudge through at a fast pace, which is very painful.

Oh, and as a person who played that remake! The long and boring battle is not an oversight, mistake, or mess-up. It's even in the remake, and it's just as boring as ever.

I saw this one was shining force and knew exactly which level it would be. Agreed 100% here, this level never put me off the game, but its too slow too early in the game. Never a good combination.
Those levels just look like hell to have to sit through with all those terrain cutting fields. This is one of the reasons why I'm reluctant to get into SRPGs, because the fun depends heavily on good game (and level) design. Missions shouldn't feel like a sluggish grind fest or a chore to play through like you want to get it over with as soon as possible. What I've seen in this video looks like a terrible mix of both. Also "I'm sorry, fuck it" -- best line ever. Would have been my reaction to this game if I were playing that awful looking second level.
@hiroyuki648

Not all SRPGs are that slow, though. It's just that Shining Force put something you should be seeing mid/late-game during early-game. Most Fire Emblem games might have a slow start, but some chapters later you will already notice a speed up on the pace. Except for FE7 (or just Fire Emblem in the west) and Lyn's Tale, as Lyn herself said, "Fuck it". Fuck that overly long tutorial. I was glad when I actually started the game on Eliwood's Tale. It's so much more fun.
Ahh, the Armads crit never gets old
It's probably best to just train your characters on the first map. No long walks to get to the enemy.

I'll never have problems with SF series, even in that second battle or on the other giant maps. But i agree, they are SO GIANT! To avoid that two final enemies, put two characters that attack from distance behind the river (like Hans and Tao) and attack from there.

SF1's battles are very slow compared to SF2, biggest issue is the insane forest and mountains you have to traverese through to the point you have to use flyers and beastmen who just yeet through all terrain like its nothing. I feel the reason these battles are ment to take so long especially with traversal is that it's ment to make it look like some of these battles happened over a few hours. Didn't get to complete these games properly till 2018 and I agree with you on SF1 tho I still love the game with it's flaws n all but SF2 improves heavily on everything.

Agreed, Shining Force is a lot more beginner-friendly than Fire Emblem. It lets you level grind, there's no weapon durability, and there's no permadeath. Hey, John Doe, didya know there's a remake on GBA? It's called "Shining Force: Resurrection of the Dark Dragon"
One of the worst levels that happens early was in Enter the matrix, after the epic fighting and snipping if the airport you need to chase Axel who is in a plan "oh this sounds fun, I'm gonna be epic and do stunts in the car and it's gonna be fun!", Oh how wrong was I, here you can go to slow as your chasing it but you can't be fast as there's bumps and sharp turns and then you had to avoid anything in your way, including pillars and metal boxes, finally if the torment couldn't get worse you get hunted down by the police theeeen you chase a agent! This happens on a early part and to top it off it's with a character that should not be able the mission is called aqueduct and the game is for Ps2 but after that horrible part it gets alot better. Fun fact the game is made made completely out of motion control for the movements of the characters! Lub Lub gets what Lub Lub wants
Wait till you see Ozma on FF9, the battle is based on luck so even the strongest parties can struggle.
I played this game sooooo much when I was a kid. Fortunately, I discovered the egress spell (and Gong) pretty much right from the get-go. I was also smart enough to not put any of my characters directly between the two Rune Knights in battle two. I just had Ken and Hans use ranged attacks from across the water. I'd honestly have to say that Battle 3 was worse than Battle 2. It wasn't as tedious, but the BATS man, the fuckin' flying BATS. Low damage, but their dodge was high as fuck and they were fairly tough as well, NOT TO MENTION they had a high chance to put your characters to sleep for 2-3 turns with basic attacks. The GBA remake is a bit easier, though (which I'm not quite a big fan of since I love a challenge), and expands on the original story quite a bit. How much easier is it? Well, with the right equipment and a bit of favor from the RNG Gods, it's possible to beat the game using only the main character. You won't run into too many problems through most of the game, since you'll be absorbing all the available XP into one character. The last chapter, however, requires you to level grind for a long ass time since it just starts throwing hordes of enemies at you all at once. The GBA version does have a Newgame Plus feature, which slightly buffs the stats of all enemies each iteration, which does add a bit more challenge if you're willing to play through the game over and over again.

You also lose half your gold if you die in SF lol
I know a level from the same series that should be given a 'Worst Levels' title, and it's from the same series, The Sword of Hayja. It's the level after your entire army is split into two. You're navigating one half of the army up a bridge filled area to get to a town. It's not that bad.... If there weren't any Sorcerers. Mage units are extremely OP in the NA version of this game, as they can 1 shot multiple units with a single attack! It's an utter pain treking through that battle. I may have butchered the description of the area since I've only played and beaten the game once and don't intend on playing through it again. Especially not after being spoiled by Fire Emblem.
The music sounds like your trudging through mud that is up to your ankels
me and my friend play these games while sharing screen over discord and really fun to see what each others do, we use the rules with "if u die, u reload game, and kill all units" and in sfII always on the ouch diff xD pretty easy, the hardest battle in sfII is the chess battle.. that bloody king.. xD
Why have I never played this game it looks fantastic
it's true for sf, my brother played from 8am-16pm and he barely reached the next town lol.

Then your brother was being stupid. If he was playing for 8 hours and didn't get to the second town, which isnt even an hour into the game, thats a huge problem on his end.
As much as I like this game (although I'm stuck on that second tedious battle), There is an old saying...The Road to Hell is paved with Good Intentions...Considering the title points out it it the "Legacy of Great Intention"...
The gba remake of this particular shining game fixes many of the issues of the original. Its like the shining force equivalent of the love FE got on gba.
