  • @NotATube

    @NotATube

    I seem to remember hearing somewhere that aspartame breaks down over time- especially under adverse conditions- into something that's not too nice-tasting. And that diet soft drinks can get quite unpleasant after they're out-of-date for this reason. I'd have expected something that was just chemicals to survive better than sugar-sweetened fizzy drinks, but apparently not. Allowing for that, I was expecting the Pepsi here to be worse than it was, if anything, since it's already approaching a decade out of date. (Edit; after posting this, I noticed that "Peter JF" already made a comment explaining the chemical breakdown and shelf life of aspartame in more detail).

I found a case of orange soda from my uncles graduation party from 1986, and tried one that had remained unopened. This was in 2015 or thereabouts, so it would have been roughly 30 years old, and it was stored in a dark cool basement, and I can confirm that it had little effect on the taste, and it was actually one of the better orange sodas I’ve had. It did use natural sugars, as well as was not exposed to heat or sunlight.

    Aspartame has an advisory shelf life of five years under ideal conditions. Prolonged exposure of aspartame to high temperatures and storage leads to its breakdown into aspartylphenylalanine and methanol or in case of cyclisation into diketopiperazine. So far as I am aware Pepsi no longer contains aspartame, but an old bottle like that would have.

    Most artificial sweeteners break down at elevated temperatures and or with time. Aspartame the most common sweetener of diet soda has a half life of like a year when stored at room temp and in the low ph environment of a cola. There was likely very little if any left by the time mr ashens sampled a diet pepsi of this vintage stored under less than ideal conditions.

    When clearing out old documents and shoeboxes in my wardrobe, I found a creme egg box with 4 still inside that likely fell out of my backpack and just went forgotten about for three years. They were 2 years past their sell by date, but it was clear no insects had gotten into the box and the foil was intact, so I tried one. They weren't great, but I waited 2 days after the first one before eating a second, and finished the rest. The creme had kind of dried into something similar to cheap icing, and the chocolate was rather waxy. I think it was a batch from around the time people started to complain about them getting worse, so maybe they were always inferior. I would not have touched any of the old food Ashens has, though.

    Horrifyingly, if that expiration date is 2014, then it is logical that it is at MINIMUM nine years old, however most soda as I have encountered it tends to have a shelf life of 1 - 2 years. So this is at minimum nine years, but is far more likely to be a full decade old.

    One of the things I discovered a while back is that sodas flavored with aspartame don't react well to long periods being warmed by sunlight. Some years ago, I picked up a 2L bottle of Diet Sundrop citrus soda that had been sitting in this gas station's front shelf for nearly 18 months. It smelled fine, it had plenty of carbonation, but when I took my first sip, that stuff went right back out. Bitter as losing on an own goal, it was. The aspartame had broken up into its components, which are not at all sweet by themselves -- just from sitting in the warm front area of the store for so long. After having that one-and-only awful taste, I bothered to look at the best-by date on the bottle and vowed never to get a soda from that station ever again.
