    I think the key, for any guitar player regardless of skill level, is develop a tone that you like. Figure out how to get the sound in your head to come out of your amp. Sometimes that's using a "transparent" overdrive, sometimes it's not. There's no right or wrong effect.

    ...There’s no ‘right or wrong’, but too much distortion and having a live amp on stage is often deemed ‘from the devil’, it seems. {I don’t make the rules}

    I'm kind of new to music, but last I checked, music is a form of personal expression. If this guy likes the way his instrument sounds than that's all that matters. Non-musicians don't know anything about tone and don't care! If the song sounds relatively close to what they hear on the radio they will never know the difference. Just starting out in music myself, it seems like all tone really is, is a way for musicians that "never made it", to have something to brag about and insult other musicians to make themselves feel better about never making it, or not being able to afford nice stuff! Have a nice day.

    "Heightens the frequency of the signal..." No, increasing frequency increases the pitch of the tone. In short, overdrive/distortion pedals basically boost a signal so much, it distorts, which basically adds more frequencies... From there, certain circuitry regulates the volume of the distorted signal. The Morning Glory goes for $244... And the pedal shown is a JHS Double Barrel. Not sure if that's just an editing mistake or what... Good "affordable" OD pedals run from $60ish to around $120. Your tone is really thin and brittle. Again, maybe editing? "It takes a mono signal and widens it to give it a stereo feel." Also no, though I can see how you'd get there... Reverb takes your signal and delays it, yes, like a delay pedal, but instead of a slower response (eg. 500ms), you get an instantaneous response, which makes it sound like you're playing in a large room (depending on your settings). I'm only saying all of this for the sake of the beginners watching this video...

    Just to point it out... The double barrel pedal is basically made up of the morning glory and the moonshine pedals in one housing.... I'm guessing he was only using the morning glory side in the video

    Yes! $6000+ Worship rig (not including the pedals)!!! $2500 Boutique Amp - Check! $3000 Duesy - Check! JHS Pedals (among a dozen) - Check! Pallets converted into a trendy wall - check! 3 note solos - aaaaaaand check! This is a good video. Our P&W guitarist is a programmer at his day job and rolls with a rig that the Edge couldn't afford. I do think these videos should have a disclaimer: Small churches without a budget...you can get this tone with a mic'd up AC15 into a Line6 M9 and an Epiphone for about the cost of one Chase Bliss delay pedal.

  • @colewilsonishot

    Transparent overdrive doesn't give any "heightening" of any frequency. What it is doing is giving you that gritty overdrive sound while not coloring the tone that you have going on. Example, when you engage a tubescreamer type overdrive it adds some mid frequencies and compression. Which pushes that specific type of sound into your amp changing either only a little or a lot of your original tone. Transparent, In theory, will only add grit, and not any unwanted changes like scooping or boosting mids etc. He is pretty much spot on when it comes to the basics of delay, you get copy of what you're playing at specific points in time depending on how your pedal (or rack unit of you're old school) is set up/programmed. As for the reverb section, I get what he's saying. Reverb does/can give your signal a more "stereo" feel, but unless you're running an actual stereo rig (which everyone should from time to time... Its AWESOME) it is not stereo. What reverb is doing is adding "space"... It's putting your tone/sound or whatever into a specific place or room. It's mimicking the actual reflections of sound waves from your instrument or amp off of the walls of a room, cave, hall etc. and mixing it in to your dry signal to give a faux sense of having your amp mic'd up somewhere it's not. I hope I don't come across as mean or anything, God bless this guy and his team for trying to be helpful and teach the community of worship guitarists. :) and Hey guitar guy.. that's my favorite guitar... can't wait to get my hands on one.. Oh gear.. the money sucking addiction to guitar gear...

    +Joe Cook The JHS doesn't seem worth the money to me, their 808/Morning Glory circuits aren't THAT much better than the much cheaper options available. $315 for a Double Barrel, or $180ish for a TS9 and a Mooer Blues Crab (which is a Bluesbreaker clone, like the Morning Glory) or a Soul Food if you want a different flavor of dynamic overdrive. I'm not saying the JHS is bad by any means, just that I'm never going to see it as being worth $300

    I only made it about 3 minutes into the video. My credit cards were tapped out after the Duesenburg guitar and Matchless amp. My worship rig consist of all used equipment (e.g. MXR, EH, etc pedals), a homemade cab, and is starting to become Squier central for guitars. I don't think my entire rig cost as much as his patch cables. My take home comment: Worship is only as good as as where your heart is - Don't worry about other people's set ups.

    I play these small churches, 100 people would be a huge crowd but usually less then half of that. I usually plug a Gibson Les Paul into my (new to me) Fender Tonemaster Twin since it weighs a little over 30 lbs and is easy to pack in and out, plus it has a XLR (and cab sim) out making it easy to run into whatever little PA (if any) they have. Use the reverb if I don't have natural reverb in the building and sometimes my amp tremolo. That's it. Plug in and do it. My other (main) amp is a Fender Princeston Reverb (handwired 64 RI) that I always stuck on a chair and miced if I had to, but usually didn't. I never play with drummers, usually just pianos/organs. Maybe a bass player.

    Just ran across this video - nice job describing and sampling. Thought I'd throw in 2¢ for electric-acoustic guitars. They almost always have to be amped to get any volume and pick up more tone and resonance - so they can benefit from a little 'attitude', too. LoL. I've actually used a slight phase for a few slower worship songs. Worked well🤷🏻‍♂️🎶😊

  • @onevoiceinc
    @onevoiceinc6 жыл бұрын

    As an old school guitarist, I specifically try to avoid so many of the 'trends' in the typical worship arts set. (I'll refrain from mentioning the set product brands, the women's pants/skinny jeans, the 'worship scarves,' and the capo-dependence that I have seen among so many in my 13 years playing in churches. Thankfully, they let me play like I play, which is why I have continued to play in that arena.) That being said, I prefer a more rock distortion sound (normally I aim for a blend between a Jerry Cantrell or Joe Satriani type distortion sound mixed in with some Eric Johnson or David Gilmour), because I'm a rock musician who's played many diverse styles and venues. Over the years, I've observed some good and bad aspects with praise and worship artists. As far as the good, I would list the willingness of the musicians to play (and on some occasions, you may find some who are teachable. Those tend to become the better breed of musician, while so many others play in some form of 'I have arrived' mindset.) On the bad, I'd say the first is the tendency of so many - SO MANY - to follow the trends of their peers (ie. playing limitations, choosing gear, not practicing or not practicing to actually build on one's individual skill, etc.), which can be a bit disturbing. Secondly (and in spite of the understood reliance on the same four chord structure to relate to the congregation/audience), pdub (P/W) music is built on the same radio formula every other pop genre heavily relies on: I - IV - V - vi chords and progressions. This often times can further feed into the 'I have arrived' false mastery mindset, when (at best) it merely means those musicians have gotten good at playing over the same four chords only. If thrown into more diverse styles, progressions, or exotic scale structures those musicians would be lost. Third (I could literally write a book on my observations, and maybe I will one day), there seems to be an extremely heavy reliance on 'buying a sound' (ie the massive pedal boards) vs developing a sound/style (technique). This results in so many limitations in the musician's personal style. Over the time I've played in churches I've heard lots of scripture tossed around, but one of the most greatly missed seems to be Psalm 33, where it specifically says 'play *skillfully*' rather than *comfortably*. Prior to that, it also says to make a new song. I see little of either... just a lot of people following the same trends, writing styles, progressions, etc. This is kinda why I tend to not listen to any more pdub than what I have to. In the book *Heart of the Artist* the author asks why the best musicians are always the ones outside the church, and that's an honest question. I'm always waiting and hoping for that to change...

    Agreed. I’m a rock guy that started playing at church. I like to sound like me, Not the 1,334,245th “THE EDGE” copy. They call it worship tone, but it’s copying whatever the record industry promotes/pays to be popular. Music is a business. Worship tone is part of that business. If it ain’t making money, it doesn’t get played. I’m so glad that there are still folks out there that want to sound like themselves and not like U2 #1 trillion. I never liked U2 anyway. Carry on my dude.

It can get pricy for sure buy pro-grade gear, but a good way to look at it is instead of buying an xbox and all with that, it's guitar gear that's bought. $180 will get you a solid Overdrive that can get some transparent gain and cleans. Most pro-grade single pedals will cost less than $200, whether OD, distortion, compression, boost, etc. Go on the Chicago Music Exchange or Reverb.com and check out their "boutique" pedals new and used. How do i get a good tone straigh from my amp, u need a good tone a warm solid tone before to add any kind of FX in to your chain, other wise you only gonna be masking a trash tone with FX which is not a good practice, i think that Hendroffs succes it's just that, he has a solid warm tone even with no FX. +ugug888 Well, technically, no, but a stereo sound is a tone thickener because of the spread of the speakers. Reverb makes the sound thicker and more ambient. Similar, not the same, but I got the meaning.

    +ugug888 Also, "overdrives heighten the frequency of the signal going to the amp, and gives it the sound of overdrive tubes" that put me off... XD A lot of the technical explanation is dead wrong. Immediately after he says "We like transparent overdrive because non-transparent overdrives wrap your tone in distortion." The Morning Glory has a mid-hump iirc.

    ***** Would you say delay and reverb are modulated sounds? They take a straight signal and fatten them up. Reverb has tails, delay has tails. Delay changes a standard tone by adding a second or an analog tone by adding to the mix. Reverb adds a different tone that is adjusted by the mix. Lighten up, he may have misspoke, but there are similarities. Haven't you ever misspoke?

    There's no way that Matchless actually sounds as bad as it does in this video, must have been the mic placement or even the settings you used (like the bass at 9 o'clock). Great explanations though, really. Maybe this tone you're using is one that you typically use so that you avoid adding too much mud to the overall mix of the band, which is a great thought process to utilize, but I think we'd all love to hear the same amp but with a rounder sound. Thanks!

    There's a whole lot of complaining on here about the gear and choice of example material, but seriously, people are just trying to make helpful videos for beginners. It's got a "101" on there for a reason. The guitar industry is saturated with options, so if JHS is not "affordable" for you, even on the used market, then do your homework and find a comparable pedal at your budget. JHS is affordable when you consider the options available to guitarists nowadays. Please excuse this dude for not wasting an additional $1k to buy a cheapo amp, guitar, overdrive, delay and reverb pedal for the sole purpose of making these tutorials, and so that you feel better about how his setup compares to yours. Nice gear definitely makes a difference in the right hands, but so does cheap gear when you're willing to learn the equipment and get the most out of it. People need to cut these guys a break, they're putting themselves out there and actually trying to be helpful - that's more than a lot of us can say, my self included.

  • @chriswade9673

    Maybe his affordable setup should at least be a little more practical and doable. Most of us can't afford a Douchenburg and a Matchless and a board full of JHS. He didn't even make his tone sound all that glorious with the $10,000 his pastor parents spent on that :P

    I am sure the beginner worship player will get a lot out of what the effects sound like and how they are used, but the technical information regarding what the pedals do to the signal is very misleading and incorrect. I also understand that simplicity is key when beginning so you do not have to explain diodes, cathodes, etc. but do not attempt to explain a device without actually knowing what it does, that can be frustrating for a mislead beginner.

  • @guitaristwilllane

    @guitaristwilllane

    I stumbled across this video again and I guess it may help if I clarify what OD's, Delays, and Reverbs actually do, at a basic but usable understanding. Overdrive pedals simulate tube amp clipping through solid state components like the diode and transistor. This allows for more pronounced distortion characteristics at lower amp volumes. OD's also push an amp with more signal, resulting in more clipping from the amp as well. Clipping is where the input signal has more "energy" than the output device can handle without "chopping off" or reducing the signal to some degree. OD's will often impart a bit of voicing onto the sound, typically emphasizing the midrange of which the guitar is primarily mixed as a midrange instrument. Refer to the wiki article for more info: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Distortion_(music) The description of Delay was not necessarily incorrect, but left some important bits out. Delays do "copy" the signal but it is maybe more descriptive to say delays repeat the signal multiple times, within a regular interval of time, and typically degrades in volume over time. It is more like an echo effect. Reverbs simulate the sound as if you were hearing the guitar played in certain room spaces, like a concert hall or a cathedral. Reverberation as a scientific term is the result of sound persisting in a room space after the sound source itself has stopped producing the original sound. Sound bounces off the walls and resonates, and reverb pedals simulate that phenomena.

    I'm a professional worship musician, and yes, that kind of warm delay/verb sound is used a lot in worship music. But please do something different too. God doesn't want us all to sound the same, he wants you to find the tone that only you can produce with the unique gifts he gave you. All kinds of music can worship our Lord and just because a lot of bands are using one specific sound doesn't mean you have to use that sound too.
