Worried About Vocal Damage? Try This Self Check Exercise...

Always consult a doctor if you're seriously worried about whether you've damaged your voice. But often just complete vocal rest is enough to reverse symptoms of an overstressed voice. In my case it was, and I found this to be a great exercise to check to see how my voice was feeling. I still do these low volume hums to check my voice before a vocal practice session to see if it sounds/feels ready to sing. It's also a good exercise to relax your voice after an intense vocal workout or show.

Dude THANK YOU, I'm a metal vocalist and do alot of growling and I was really wanting a way to check my voice in case my technique is ever off and I end up hurting myself, I did the test and turns out I'm fine. Just needed some more water and some rest.

yes, this is good as test and warmup. The problem now is that pop music style favors yelling and screaming and pushing which is absolutely the worst thing for the voice. Resting the voice even a few hours can be helpful. As a current opera star says, "sleep and silence" are her rules. Humming is good. My old voice teacher who was famous and amazing boiled it down to don't lean back (alignment), relax /drop your jaw (vowels), silent breath (no gasping), and SING. Every pitch combined with every vowel has a particular place in the head/chest cavities where it resonates properly. If you practice looking for those places, you will develop a good sound. Takes time, years to do it CORRECTLY.

I think my voice is definitely damaged. My voice is gravelly, airy and not as rich as before. If I sing louder it is very obvious. I just get a rattle or a squeak. Like something missing in the middle. I miss my voice. I kept on singing everyday even though I had pain. Something sharp in the centre of a raw sensation.

+arxsyn Most vocal damage will heal itself with rest. The best you can do is try to stop making any sound at all as long as possible. If you can make no sound for two weeks, it will most likely heal whatever your experiencing. Also drink tons of water. Next time try not to sing something if you have pain. Voices can take a lot , but pain means "stop".

arxsyn STOP SINGING. You were singing incorrectly, which is why you damaged your vocal cords. If you keep ignoring the pain and singing through it, your vocal cords will develop calluses and it will be very painful and pretty impossible to sing and even your talking will sound different. If you are missing a chunk of your range, you have already damaged your cords quite a bit. I would recommend seeing a specialist and NOT SINGING at all because it will only damage then further and you don’t want to damage them so far as to need surgery I assume, so just try your absolute best not to sing. Ik it sucks sooo much and it feels like your soul is missing and it’s hard to avoid the temptation but try.

For the past few weeks, my voice has become airy and sometimes it’s hard to use chest, there I days where I could use it just fine but sometimes it would sound harsh or rough. whisper/falsetto singing is a bit easier. Sometimes head voice is easy. But I have no control over it. I used to be able to whistle up to C6 or D6. But It’s completely gone. When I try to, the highest I could go is about E5, and G5 if really try which isnt a whistle anymore.

Hi, I am 40 male and I use to sing karaoke 5 or 6 nights a week years ago and my voice was great! About 6 months ago I joined a little garage band and wow my voice has really changed for the worse. I run out of breath fairly easy I can’t hit the higher notes like I use too and i sound pitchy a lot of the times. I’ve always had a really good ear so singing has always been fun. But now I’ve lost all my confidence when I get behind a mic and it makes me sad.

I’m really worried. I’m 15, I go to singing lessons once every week. Sometimes, I will try to sing broadway songs for fun. Broadway is what I’m being taught how to sing. When I sing the songs, my voice and throat is perfectly fine, however after a couple songs in maybe around 5-6 in a row, I’ll stop singing and my throat will start to have a slight pain. Maybe a 2/10. It happened just recently tonight and I’ve been searching everywhere to see if I have vocal damage. Every time this happens, my talking voice is fine, and I could continue to sing if I wanted to. My singing teacher has not said to me that I have vocal damage, and has not brought it up at all. I even did this “test” and I could hold the note fine. I’m still really worried about the pain in my throat afterwards though! Does this mean anything?

I don't know what to do and there's no specialists around here I can go to... Do I just wait and stop singing for awhile... Like rest.. Please help me I need my voice back... I'm nothing without it... 😥😥 Thanks... What do I do... I also noticed I switched into falsetto at around and E5... I'm a guy.

Ok, so I'm not sure if this will work for everyone but I accidentally over sang this last week and wouldn't sing for three days, on my third day my mom made me chicken noodle soup to try and help my throat AND YALL MY VOICE WAS BACK. I had dress rehersal the next day and only suffered a little bit of pain afterwards and so I had more soup again and I'm all good now.

Alright, dumb question, but I sing all the time (every day, actually). Is it normal for my voice to feel sore and worn (like, to the point where it becomes harder and harder to put any wind behind higher notes) after a long practice or set or a good day's worth of singing, or is that a sign of something worse? I've been singing for about a year (self-taught, not bad at carrying a tune but no professional), and USUALLY my voice will feel 100% again the next day (or the day after that, if I REALLY sang too much). I also chug green tea like nobody's business, if that means anything.

David, i was practicing way too many hours everyday and wasn't really resting my voice at all in terms of taking days off, and i woke up suddenly one day with a scratchy weak voice that got fatigued easily and could barely make any sound singing wise. I've been resting my voice as i can for about a month now, it got better i atleast can talk somewhat now, but its still not comfortable, and my singing is the same, still weak and scratchy and it takes effort to make sound. I went to an ENT and he said my vocal cords looked fine? i was relieved but confused since, he didn't tell me what to do?. Not sure what to do now other than rest... if i have no visible vocal cord problems than why is this happening?.

Hi David, my name is Jared and I've been singing since 4th grade, i'm a freshman In high school right now and my voice isn't how it was 4th,5th,6th or 7th grade year when i noticed it, i also make music and go to the studio and to me its been a waist because every time i record i don't like it, so it takes HOURS just to record one song. I stopped singing the summer of 2014 and when i went back to it i couldn't hit notes like before, i didn't even know what i was doing, just singing, and it sounded very bad (if you ask me) and of course a million things ran throughout my head like is this permanent, did i ever know how to sing in the first place, or am i just trying to hard. But when I'll sing for people they'll say "your good. " or "nice!" and i'm sure my moms not waisting her money on me for no reason. I need help because I'm going to a studio in Georgia soon and its VERY important that i don't crack or sound bad. Here's a list of things I've already tried *Tea/honey *Vocal warm ups( not daily ) *Constant singing *Research That's about it! I just thought maybe its puberty or just change but i also think how long is this process. I'm the only singer in my family so i just need another singers advice. Thank You David, I hope i didn't confuse you 😊

Something isn't right with my vocal cords. I just know it. I've been practicing and learning to sing with a singing teacher for 2 years now. My range is still EXTREMELY short, which frustrates me to all hell, I have trouble keeping a steady tone, I can't for no apparent reason learn how to scream, shout and use grit in my voice (neither the healthy nor the unhealthy way) and I feel like I'm ready to call it quits. But I'll definitely consult a doctor first and see if there IS something wrong with my vocal cords or not, and whether or not it can be fixed somehow. But I doubt it. I also feel like I have to support my voice way too heavily, like... pushing 60kg's of weights heavy just to get a loud and somewhat clear tone. No wonder I'm getting headaches when I try to scream, because I need to push even MORE from my diaphram to the point where it feels literally impossible to get that much support going. Man I hate my body. Like god damn... The worst thing about my situation are two things: The more I practice, the harder it gets. I have no idea why. In the beginning I had a somewhat decent range, but now I have to literally PUSH just to get to the notes I used to be able to get to with ease. And the other things is, that thanks to Covid-19, I'll have to wait an undefined amount of time before I can get my vocal cords checked...

Take a break for a little bit, drink plenty of water and get plenty of rest (super cliche) and when your coming back pay attention to where the placement, what notes, vowels and how hard you're pushing in the places that cause the crackle and find better ways and placements to sing those notes that cause the crackle. Also something that helped me a ton, try to record yourself and really make sure you can hear yourself and see the difference between pushing super hard to make a note happen then back off as much as you can without losing quality. When I listened back to recordings, I found I didn't need to push nearly as hard as I was and added bonus gave me extra breath. I hope any of that helps

  • @ass640

From what I've heard, Polyps are different from nodules, much easier to repair and you should definitely go for surgery... Nodes are a far more complex problem, polyps (again just from what I've read) develop from a short term vocal abuse issue. So yeh, definitely listen to your doctor, I guarantee you if you had nodules your doctor would have told you to go on a vocal rest for a couple weeks or so. Although, after the surgery you have, the doctor will probably tell you to go silent for a little while just to let everything heal up nicely, then you can return to speech therapy then vocal technique exercises. Remember its all about preventing these problems in the future.

I went to see a doctor and he told me I had an ear infection which was the issue for it. However, I know that is not all there is to it. So I'm planning on going to an ENT soon.. then last night I was trying to clear my throats cuz it felt like there was drainage in my throats and when I did all of a sudden this sharp pain like a stabbing feeling in my throats happened all night and even now but it's not nearly as bad now and has pretty much gone away. @@krishool I'm not 100% sure what the issue is with my situation yet but the swelling in my throat appears to be a goiter according to the images I've found online.. Which would have to do with my thyroid. I have an appointment with a new doctor in the coming week or so that should bring further closure to the ordeal. Over the past year though, I've been recovering my range by practicing connecting and transitioning from all three head, mix, and chest. I have also been practicing riffs and runs to strengthen my vocal chords. This has greatly helped me sing for longer periods of time without experiencing the symptoms you are having as often. In my opinion this would be two very simple vocal therapy exercises. The headaches and fatigue you are having definitely sounds like what I am experiencing which I believe is caused by a weak thyroid. For days that I'm going to practice or sing I try and avoid anything that causes adrenaline even video games. I also avoid mold contaminated areas such as basements etc. When I do this I don't have any restrictions on my voice, no fatigue, and the lump in my throat is gone.

Since its not such a serious thing that you are having any serious pain I'd try what I suggested earlier and practice connecting and transitioning into all three voices as well as falsetto. I make this my daily routine just for maybe 5-10 minutes every day. I do them really slow and every day I try and add a higher note here and there.
