My father directed this movie when I was a kid. For some reason, someone thought it was a good idea to give me one of the "Crew" shirts when I visited set one time. As a result, I was a 7 year old owner of a military green t-shirt that inexplicably said, "World War III" in stencil font across the chest. It's only now, over 30 years later, that I realize just how weird that is.

There is a serious version of Dr. Strangelove . Sydney Lumet's Fail Safe came out mere months after Dr. Strangelove and deals with a very similar "misunderstanding escalates to nuclear war scenario", but much more grounded and technical. Not everybody dies at the end, but it's still a downer ending. The movie is not near as memorable or fun as Dr. Strangelove, but if you consider it on its own with no comparisons it's stands as a very well made political drama.

Funny enough the actions taken by the crew of the bomber in Dr. Strangelove would have prevented the disaster in Fail Safe from occurring in the first place. The line from Major Kong to Ace if I'm not mistaken is: "Why don't you get a confirmation from base." Ace a bit later relays, "message from base confirmed." They radioed there base to confirm no instrumentation failure.

You are mistaken. The giant pie fight scene is actually the original ending for Stanley Kubrick's "Dr. Strangelove." There was no similar scene ever shot for this miniseries, so it is inaccurate to suggest that the producers could have substituted a giant pie fight scene for the miniseries ending.

I just watched some parts of the 'Amerika' miniseries on KZread and now I really wanna see Brad review it. The miniseries itself is interesting in its own weird way but its production and the reaction it got is what seals the deal for me. Plus the fact that it's so obscure to contemporary audiences compared to 'Red Dawn' and 'The Day After.'

I have a hunch that the script was written during or shortly after the actual grain agreement between the US and the USSR that gave you Yakov Smirnoff, and was not updated to reflect the fact, that after the neo-Stalinist years of Brezhnev, the two following first premiers after him and before Gorbachev were former leaders of the KGB. I do think it's intentional that the screenplay purports an internal coup to plausibly deny that they wanted to suggest the Soviets want a war. In case somebody under 30 reads this, today's equivalent is when a leader says they barely have to time to watch TV, but are keenly familiar with ratings (of course same day watchers, no VOD on streaming), but I digress... I find it a bit lacking that after 1998 a new movie wasn't made about how just a year later in '83 during a NATO exercise the Soviets have mistaken a Korean commercial flight for a spy plane and shot it down. The piloy who did it died in 2015, still believing he shot down a spy plane, which would mean, yes, it has a "crisis actors" conspiracy. Andropov and Gromyko were hardliners, who believed in their ideology, and like a "No True Scotsman" believed that citizens under their occupation don't revolt, it's gangsters with CIA backing. Or at least that was the justification back then when they suppressed the uprising of 1956.

I got to finally see The Omega Man shortly after the quarantine started. 5:02- And this mini-series was 2 years before the first Terminator. 6:46- That's what I've been telling myself every morning since January 21, 2017. 7:13- Or get Ernest P. Worrell. He saved Christmas once, and he can do it again. There's more snow in this mini-series than Devil Times Five and Cutthroats Nine combined. 20:09- "Today, we celebrate our Christmas Day!" 34:48- "He falsified his research. So that RDU-90 could be approved, and Devlin McGregor could give you...Provasic!" 36:43- At least the REAL 1987 gave us RoboCop and Predator. 37:39- Should have been Crackers Phinn.

At 11:57, it almost looks like even Marcia Wallace is in this. And the actor playing the Russian colonel played one of the likable small town types on NEWHART.
