    In 1914, September, Germany almost won the war on the Western Front. After the British clashed the Germans at the town of Mons, The British and the French retreated. The German armies were in sight of Paris. The commander of the French, Joseph Joffre, knew something had to be done. The French and the British made their stand at the Marne River. (40 miles away from Paris) Their desperate counterattacks managed to save Paris and forced the Germans to retreat.

    Goes to show that you only have surface level knowledge about that war, as a matter of fact many historians debate that Germany lost exactly because of all that occupied territory. To enact that occupancy they had to remove troops from the front line and station them there, which started Germany's lack of troops and supply. Meanwhile the Entente side still had plenty of troops, where the newly joined ally (USA) was bringing in new ones by the tens of thousands per day, there was no shortage of oil, food, equipment, infantry and tanks, Germany on the other side having lost te Austria-Hungarian front, had nobody to supply them with food and oil, troops started to retreat, many refusing to fight, Morale was at an all time low with Anti-War marches happening frequently among the troops. What you're saying was a stupid myth build by officials because no troops touched German soil, so the sentiment was built that Germany only lost because its own population betrayed it for not wanting to fight any longer. The Entente side however had 3x the economic size of Germany, was booming with resources for the war, while as mentioned before Germany was completely dry, nothing left to do but surrender. A march and occupancy of all German territory was inevitable and their leaders knew it, surrendering while their Land was intact and not ravaged by enemy forces was the smart move, continuing on fighting and absolutely losing everything would had been moronic by lack of a better word...

    @Bstingnl

    In short: the Western Front was broken and Entente powers were marching towards Germany. Meanwhile Germany's allies had given up (Austria-Hungary was no more). There was so much unrest and threat of socialist revolution in Germany that the Kaiser abdicated and the new government promptly decided to sign for an armistice under unfavourable terms, rather than let the Entente powers fight their way all the way to Berlin. This is also why the Nazi's before WW II maintained the stab in the back myth that they had never lost the first war, but rather the socialists gave Germany away. They had lost it though, they just never decided to go all the way to the end.
