What do you think about The Great War mod for Napoleon? Personally of all the mods I've played this one comes pretty close to the top. All the awesome playable factions, the incredible tech tree, the variety of units from tanks to flamethrowers to historically authentic looking infantry it all just looks so good! Of course there are some bugs and issues but overall I love it. It's also great proof a World War 1 Total War could actually work, hopefully something like it happens in the future!

To be honest i feel the setting is difficult to fit to the TW battle engine and the campaign map is too simple for the complex frontlines of ww1, like there's no trench lines on the campaign map that stop your army just marching right into germany or france etc, but its still a great mod and fun to play if you can overlook that. What we need is the Franco Prussian war....

I remember it from years ago, when it was still slowly plodding along and more of a framework than actual gameplay. The fact that it has come so far is pretty amazing. Thanks a lot for spotlighting this forgotten/hidden gem from a title that is now well over a decade old.

@@miquelr2353 Italy had some hard and bloody battles against Austria in the Alpine regions between Italy and Austria, Italy and Yugoslavia and some fleet battles.

Great to see this mod coming back to life! Around 10 years ago its development shut down until recently, if I remember correctly. Fantastic mod!

The game/engine limitations still make this to just be "Napoleon, but reskinned" in terms of combat. It's a really great mod with a lot of work and research put into it, but the limitations make it not actually feel like WW1 and that is unfortunately to its detriment.

@@Dennizjoon It's not just about trenches. It's the whole way war is fought that changes so drastically during WW1 that makes it unsuited for total war style gameplay. During all the time periods total war games cover, war is more or less fought in the same way, at least on a very superficial level that can be converted to gameplay. And that is that you have armies, led by generals, that go out, clash on the field of battle/ in sieges and win or loose. This is pretty much how the first few months of WW1 went as well, but after the race to the sea, and the start of trench warfare, this stopped being the case. Now the war was fought constantly, day to day, with "battles" lasting weeks or months. The way I see it, this just does not fit into the Total war gameplay loop. As the war progress further, the tactics also change more towards small units / squad tactics, which is also not very suiatable for total war battles.

This is trully amazing, im not a fan of Total War Napoleon, played it the least of all total wars, but its amazing to see these mods that keep games alive. Possibly there will be a WW1 continuing to WW2 Total war in the future, that would be cool.

I am in total agreement with you. The naval battles doesn't work with Napoleon

I really wish someone would make either a late 1860s mod or ww1 mod for Empire Total War. Though it's outdated and the least liked between the two- being Napoleon and Empire- I still think that the map layout would facilitate a good mod of either time period. I will definitely have to give this mod a try though.

Steam and Steel is pretty close to that. But it’s a mod for Medieval 2.

Expansion of the map is the most difficult thing ever. Hopefully at some point they will be able to bring U.S. in since they entered the war in 1917. A little late, but they were still involved.

They are im multi-player. Still like 20 or so nations that participated that aren't represented due to the engines limitations. Although I remember on the dev discord there was a script that an American army would appear in France in 1917. But that's not in any actual builds of the mod. Edit: aha at the 5:00 min mark you can see what I me talking about

No reason the US should be on the map, nothing was fought in the U.S. - make them an emergent 'invading' faction like the Mongols in Medieval II, and maybe give GB and France some American troop unlocks in the same event.

I'm still mightily impressed by the level of quality in his videos. First time I watched one of his videos I thought he was a million subber. When I saw he was under 10,000 I knew I found a channel I would stick around for.

I think there are too few regional parts & cities to really get the feeling of the beginning of the 20th century but in other parts it is really good.

Somehow my favorite mod but it keeps crashing during battles. Does someone know a fix? Its driving me insane

I never understand why they always cut out northern parts of scandinavia out on the maps. I guess the world doesnt like top quality iron etc...

Love this mod - any tips on avoiding crashes?

I tried it like 2 years back, was feeling it but the campaign kept crashing so I switched back to darthmod. And now big into 1212.

I mean Ottoman has a lot of key battles in the war. First is the Dardanelles campaing which caused the dissolution of the Russian Empire also the campaings in South Arabia which leads a lot of challenge for Ottoman Empire. I hope they will find a way around to mod the game to this point. And it would be amazing to see domestic events for each faction.

Controvertial take but this mod should've been made in FoTS, I feel like it's more refined and the ultimate version of gunpowder combat in TW. Though I'm not sure if the engine could take it.

I always thought that the biggest challenge in developing a WW I or even WW II Total War game (the reason why one was never done before) was the use of aerial warfare and the role of planes in the campaign map. But since then, I thought that it could work if done similarly to the space battles of Star Wars Empire at War. Since our planes can't just hover in place when not being actively used, they could just fly in a radius (so for things like that to work, the battle map for aircraft battles should be at least 4x bigger than the current land ones). Other use of aircraft warfare such as bombing strategic places, could be executed similarly to how agents works, so it's not decided in the battlefield. That said, it's cool to see in this mod at least some use of aircraft warfare (the reconnaissance), which is something I have thought of too. It would be cool if there's anti aircraft artillery as well that can be built on the campaign map to counter the aircraft attacks. A similar element, used via campaign map, would be the use of long range missile, which started in WW I. And for modern warfare in general (from WW I onwards), the conquering of territory should be different from the traditional TW way. Instead of capturing a whole area when occupying a city of town, you should be acquiring territory bit by bit as you win (and vice-versa of course). With little, but important things like cutting supply lines, etc, a modern warfare TW game has potential to be the most strategic of all TW games and one of the best war games ever. And a overall addition that I'd like to see in a future Total War (any historical period) would be being able to access your towns/cities any time (not just when there's a battle) and be able to actually upgrade them from that map (like a city building game). I think you can be much more strategic when being able to choose where you place certain buildings and defenses in your towns. Finally, a dumb question: if you install the mod, it would work like the Game of Thrones one for Medieval II, where it completely overrides the base game and you can only play it again if you uninstall the mod, unlike an expansion which you can just choose to play whenever? Planes could also work like the bombardment mechanic in Shogun 2 fallen samuraj. Battles needs to be nearby airfield etc.. Were fighter planes could work like an % if the bombardment will work or not. Enemy has 10 fighter planes and you have 5 bombardment planes which make it like 75% that the areal bombardment will work.

Since you played the game till 1918, I'll have a question. Everytime I play the mod as any faction other than Germany, the allies always retake belgium and release it or it emerges on its own but for some reason germany always loses belgium after a few turns and it wont redeclare war on it wich is very immersion breaking plus it slows down the gameplay. And I've encountered this bug in the launcher version too. Did you encounter this bug?

Would be amazing if they were able to make anatolia a traversable land, and give the ottoman and bit of extra strength

Whenever I try to play a somewhat sizeable battle in the campaign, it crashes. Is there anything I can do? I want Le Petite Soldats to conquer Germany in open field. But i cant run a battle for more than 15 minutes without it crashing and the glorious victory never being achieved. (This is on 6.2, latest version)

This looks to be the absolute best WW1 game of all those games about the "War to End all Wars" that have come out recently. My only question/concern is that I didn't see the Unites States as one of the factions. I realize they only entered the war during the last 6 months, but still played a vital role in it. Does the U.S. become a "playable faction" toward the end, or do you know of any future plans for them to be eventually added? If not, then I don't think it can be considered to be totally historically accurate.

it has some issues. Like if France takes Berlin and you're an ally, you NEED to delcare war on them. Also, Germany always seems to steamroll France in my campaigns. The cargo ships are also limited to like 2. So it's just a slight tiny boost. It has a lot of greatness in it, but ut still needs a few tweaks.

The mod for Empire (Empire 2)..every time I try to go to a campaign it crashes. Anyone know what's wrong?

No trenches = big nope for me, I think we'll get a closer-to-life WW1 "TW experience" from the folks doing the Ultimate General games, I played their Civil War game and its quite fun, you think the game looks kind of arcadey, and it is, but the scale of battles become immense depending on the map, you have to control vast fronts, and sometimes they're shaped like a V, and you're being squeezed on a hill with artillery and thousands of enemy troops, its really satisfying to beat them back.

you do realise only a small part of ww1 was trenches right? outside of the later end of western theatre most of it was rather mobile, with only smaller positions being dug and abandoned

@@DaniboyBR2 im telling you comparatively it was a smaller part, it was only as big a thing on the western front and a few other areas, vast majority of ww1 was fought on the move, especially eastern front. while yes, trenches were dug everywhere it was usually things like foxholes or shallow pits not a trench as we imagine it

This mod should have been made in Empire, the campaign map alone would guarantee it to be the biggest mod ever. A real World War One. It would include much more of Russia, opening bigger opportunities for Civil war. It would have Iceland and a large North sea, ideal for naval warfare between Germany and Britain. It would have North Africa, and Palestine, and there you have one front added. Balkans would have Bosnia, Serbia and Bulgaria, none of witch exist in Napoleon ("Balkans" region has Bosnia, meaning A-H never occupied Bosnia in 1878? And Bulgaria, one of 4 Central Powers is totally absent in this mod). And Germany controls Warsaw at the start!? What? Also, Ottoman empire would be an EMPIRE, not just one province. Then you get Caucasian front, Persian front, for much more dynamic campaign. India as a moneymaking factory for Britain open for raiding. Then you get North and South America, meaning you can have USA in the mod. And in the end, those trade zones around the world would make an ideal colonial-like fronts. All in all, the fact the map is so small is the reason I can't get into this mod, as I don't feel it is the real World War One mod. A missed opportunity. Shame.

@@TheTerminatorGaming Yea. I always love to max out the difficulty and see how long I can hold it. When tanks pop out it gets insane. Also when Frostpunk 2 comes out look at that. Not sure if you're familiar with it, but essentially it's a city builder survival game where you have gradually make worse and worse choices in an attempt to save people. Amazing game that really makes you think.

Terminator - I need your help. I have Napoleon: Total War as downloaded and run through Steam. I downloaded the WWI mod and moved the data file no problem. I cannot find the Napoleon script folder to drop the user.script file into and overwrite. Can you help?

Its in your user appdata folder. Go into your user folder on your main hard drive, unhide any hidden folders, go into appdata and roaming then the creative assembly folder you should find it there

We all know who I'm about to campaign.

I would be very interested, if they have the spanish flue in the game. A pandemic, that killed more people, than any other pandemic in history, but for the black death. All waring nations kept the outbreak under wraps, so spain, which was neutral, got the dubious honor of having the flue named after it, as they were the first nation to acknowledge, that there is a sickness raging through the world.

the "where the shadows lie" lord of the ring mod for total war troy stopped development :(( BUT they opened assets and current progress for everyone, in case anyboy wants to pick it up WE NEED TO SAVE THIS GUYS THIS COULD BE THE GREATEST MOD EVER

Since the regions are hardcoded, Bulgaria is pretty much impossible to include (unless the Ottoman empire is removed)

I cant find the app data folder in D drive only in the C one but Napoleon is downloaded on the D one. What should i do

Doesn’t matter where Napoleon is installed, you need to put it in the appdata folder :)

Those factions could possibly be added as custom battle factions since Custom battles can have more factions than campaign. I wish Empire was more like napoleon. Napoleon is more polished and less buggy in terms of battles, but the campaigns suck. If only there was a way to Mod the campaign map in napoleon so the Developers could make the entire world for the mod.

There’s plenty about it, custom maps, tanks, the unit visuals. That makes it feel WW1, but often the AI forces you into situations that are leaning towards Napoleonic

@@cigercihakan5558 it does, that’s not to take away what the modders have achieved. I think it’s due more to the limitation of the games engine.

Its Napoleon so things are limited but definitely better. Not quite Darthmod better but it is getting there :)
