World's Strongest Men in a Tug o' War Challenge at Braemar Gathering Highland Games site in Scotland

The World's strongest men attend the world famous Braemar Gathering Highland Games site in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, for a Tug o' War challenge against a local team.
The strongest men were Eddie Hall, Brian Shaw, Nick Best and Robert Oberst, who took on a Tug of war team from the Braemar and Invercauld Estate area of Aberdeenshire. The idea was to see how many it would take to compete against them for weight and strength. The Braemar Gathering is the only games attended by the Royal Family each year, with Balmoral Estate within the local Deeside area or Aberdeenshire, Scotland.

    They had good technique. The bottom line is, you can't put 400lbs of weight into the souls of 2 shoes on grass. It's just a traction battle more so than a strength competition. Like having a 3000hp car on street tires. You can't even use 1/3 of the hp because of the lack of traction.

    Very true, the same thing was true for the strongest recorded horse, who pulled 50 tons, but was only able to do that with shoes designed to provide the best possible traction on that specific surface.

  • @G3LOFY

    @G3LOFY

    I don't think traction is the problem here. They simply failed on the technique side. Traction force is determined by the mass, gravitational constant and traction coefficient. They obviously have the mass, and both sides have the same traction coefficient (rubber:dirt). If these strongmen were just properly synchronized, they would have won.

    @@G3LOFY Their mass does not improve their traction proportionally to their relative strengths. Every man on that rope on both sides had more strength left unused. So as you saw the weight helped a bit because it became 6 vs 4. So we can give a rough traction advantage because of their additional weight of about 3/2. It's still not enough to hit their actual physical strength potential.

    @daddyrichten If a tree did compete and the tree had arms and hands and a brain to control them, a circulatory system, cardiovascular system, nerves etc and they happened to hold the match exactly where that tree had grown, then yes it would be a grip and strength of upper body competition for that tree. Obviously that ridiculous hypothetical just wasted everyone's time. Thanks though I guess?
