World's Steepest Railway - Scenic World, Katoomba
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
The Scenic Railway is the steepest cable-driven railway in the world, with a steepest incline of 52 degrees contained within a total incline distance of 415 metres. It was originally constructed for a coal and oil shale mining operation in the Jamison Valley in the 1880s, in order to haul the coal and shale from the valley floor up to the escarpment above. From 1928 to 1945 it carried coal during the week and Passengers at weekends. The coal mine was closed in 1945 and it became a permanent Tourist Attraction.

Went there in '73 with my parents. One lady on our bus tour was too scared to go up again on the train and walked up all those steps. When we got back to our bus someone had kicked over a bottle of drink and Dad had these ladies on about there being no need to wet themselves over the trip. Loved the trip😊😊😊 and love the memories.
Just shared this on an American friend's post and the horrible memories came flooding back. Back in the '70s, I was 6-years-old and went on this evil ride with family. No warning that the train literally drops vertically so it's literally hanging. Probably the most scary experience of my life - and I'm 54 now.
My family use to go to Katoomba in summer time by old steam train . We would walk to Old cable railway and loved the trip down. There was no cable car then, we would walk up to top. Katoomba was always cooler than Sydney western suburbs where we lived. MEMORIES now I am an ANCIENT 80 years old.
That's so weird. I went almost all the way through watching this thinking that we were going down.

Same.
When I was there, in 2002, there were no guardrails when you got off the thing. You stood there, thousands of feet in the air on a metal platform, waiting for a ride to take you back up…to endure the ride one more time. Never again. Never.
I "drove" the Scenic Railway in 1989. I was a student at the old Commonwealth Bible College in Katoomba and this was my sole income. We didn't actually drive it, just signaled safety and preparedness. The actual driving was done from a wheelhouse beyond the entrance to the Railway. The first day or two is exciting but, let me assure you, after that it is intensely boring! Some days we would do well over 50 ascents/descents. The only break from the boredom was when we swapped with the other attraction operator and worked the Skyway. Still, boring as it was, there's worse offices in the world.

Has there ever been an accident on it? seems too steep/dangerous for it to have never happened
Done it in 2019 a family trip we will never forget, we done nearly everything possible in NSW & met lovely people....

Hey! Coincidence.. Was there with my family in 2019 dec
It's all fun and games until the cable breaks, as I don't see any kind of emergency stopping device on the tracks for if that happens.
Was always the best getting in the front seat, particularly for the trip back up, felt like you were going to fall out the front :) Have been meaning to go check out the updated carriage to see if it's as thrilling
I wasn't sure what to expect when I got on this ride. The steepness is really extreme, 52 degrees doesn't seem right to me, it seems more. It is not so scary but the ways the rails disappear is a bit jarring. Anyway, it is not just a mine but a beautiful mountain preserve. Just hope the bush flies don't come out (I hate them!).
I loved it all the years I've been going there.. I cant believe it's still going I haven't been there in ages..
The train was fun and the area is beautiful.
I've been on this ride before. It is quite steep at some point. The problem is, the ride back up goes backwards.
Well worth the fun ride to the bottom where we walked the board walk to the Rainbow Room to see a Superb Lyrebird. Brace your feet.
On Huentitan's Barranca (Huentitan's Canyon) of Guadalajara, there is a railway tha is knowed as "Las Vías" that is more larger than this, this railway is used by workers of CFE which is an electricity state company of México, however, all the people the make exercise on the canyon, walk on this railways to get faster from the bottom of the canyon to the top, this video remind me when I was younger that I do that several times on that place
Where's the cable? I can't see it.
Katoomba ist located in the blue mountains, near sydney (australia). Well, its an unusual ride but definitely no reason to scream or to be afraid of.

+Chloe Fin Oh, so that's where it is! Not everyone knows "Katoomba" and "Jamison Valley". 8-)
The question is... at what point is the railway considered an elevator? This is a pretty steep drop at the start.
i went on this today i nearly fell forward its really steep our ride was 62* degrees i had to push forward to stay sturdy and i went on the cable car it was like 50 degrees in it i was burning
Nice the video very much thanks.
Did this in 1955 - bit more basic in those days and extremely memorable.
nice video !!! :)
What's with the track being decorated with flowers or knickknacks in the thumbnail?
Imagine if the cable snapped.....
WoW!
A train horn at the right moment would certainly change the mood.
imagine the cable broke

I don't understand why they call it a railway, it's a funicular.
Not actually a railway. As it uses cable it is really a funicular. The worlds steepest RAILWAY actually is the Pilatus Railway in Switzerland.
